BOLT MECHANISM.
Application filed August 10, 1923. Serial No. 658,755. 7
This invention relates to bolt throwing,
controlling, and mounting mechanisms.
This invention has utility when incorporated in connection with closures of the single and double door type forv vaults and safes.
Referring to the drawings Fig. 1 is a front view of a safe, having an embodiment of the invention incorporated therewith; V a
Fig. 2 1s a larged scale, of portions of the doors of Fig. 1, with the front plate of the doors removed;
Fig. 3 1s a fragmentary view-of the bolt: throw devices of the doors, with the back plates removed, looking at the devices from the rear or inside of the safe;
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary, tion on the line IV-IV, Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a still further enlarged fragmentary section of the bolt lock side of the device of Fig. l; and Fig. 6 is a fragmentary section of the line VI-VI, Fig. 2.
The safe as shown is provided with an outer wall 1 and inner wall 2 spaced there-- from. Between these inner and outer walls 1 and 2 there is connect1ngframe'3 for a front opening. Alongv one side of th s front opening, there is a pair of hinges tInount-f panion door 7 is shown as comprising afront by a plate12 frame 11, closed at the and at the rear by a plate 13. The double wall of the safe housing double wall double door structure, have as filler betweenv the double walls thereof, insulation material 14:. The frame 3 between the walls 1 and 2 of the safe is of such form as to interfit with the frames 8 and 11 of the doors 5 and 7, and furthermore these doors 5 and 7 have an interfitting relation at their central portion.
On the upper free end portion of the frame 8 of the door 5, there is shown a. disc 15 as a guide for abolt 16, in its throw outward through opening 17 into frame 3. Remote therefrom, in the lower part of this door 5,
fragmentary View, on an 'en horizontal sec- 1, 2, as well as the the frame 8.
in the frame 8, is shown a disc 18 as a guide for a bolt 19' to be thrust downward asthe bolt 16 isv thrust upward. This bolt 19 is thrust downward to enter opening 20 of the door frame 3 between the inner and outer walls 2, 1. From the bolt 16 extends downward, a link 21 loosely connected for slight play as. to bolt 16 and for" slight play. as to the crank rocker 22. The opposite arm of this rocker 22 is connected by link 23 with the lower bolt 19f0r slight. looseness in connection. tween the elements of this linkage and crank constructioninsures ease of operation and.
facilitates assembly, with avoidance of binding between the bolt series. l ran gible pin or screw 2 1 connectsthis rockable member 22 with ill-plateor washer 25 which is held by nut 26 in locked or seated position with '65 The. freedom or looseness be spindle 2'? extending through the front plate 9 of the door 5 to carry handle 28. This rocker spindle 27 in its extent from the rocker. member 22 to the front door platepasses through tube 29' which extends back to engage annular flange carrying plate or member 30 as a shield for the bolt throw mechanisms and furthermore to keep the insulation filler therefrom.
In this double door safe structure, a guard is provide'dinsuring that the bolt must be thrown into locked position in door 5 before the boltsmay be thrown in door 7, which door 7 carries the lock.
tend into cam slot 32 o'f'sheet metal guard 33. having slots 34 guiding this plate 33 on pins 35 carried by the member 30. This guard plate 33 has concavo-convex bolt port1on'36 extendin through onenin 37 as at k k:
guide way from the member 30 and through The slot 32 is so designed as to the action of the rocker 22 that in the throwing of the bolt into locking'or holding position by thrusting the links 21,23, away from the rocker 22, it causes the bolt portion 36 of the guard member 33 to be withdrawn from locking position as to the guide way 37 so that, this portion 36 is not in flush position with the outer end of such guide way. When the handle member 28 is rocked to throw the rocker member 22 so To this end there is provided a pin or connectionthat the p links 21, 23, withdrawltheir respective bolts 16, 19, this guide plate 33 instead of being withdrawn is thrust outward as the pin 31 rides into the slot 32 to urge this member 33 so that the bolt portion 36 thereof is flush with the outer end of the guide 37. The
position of the rocker 22inliigs. 2 and 3 is in the withdrawn position of the bolts and accordingly in the thrown position of the guard 33. An adjustable stop is provided for the guard plate. To this end, this guard 7 plate 33 is shown as having a lateral offset The second or look carrying dooris shown in F ig. 2 as having its frame 11 provided v below the door 7 is shown as having a fen .rule 46 as a guide for bolt 47 which travels with a ferrule 43 as a guide for bolt 44 which travels through opening 45 into the frame 8 on the door 5, upper portion, while into and out of opening 48 of the frameS of the door 5. Loosely connected with bolt 44is lever 49 mounted on fulcrum 50 and this lever extendsdownwardly while a lever 51 from the bolt 47 upwardly extends having fulcrum 52. These levers 49, 51, extend to rocker member 53. This rocker member 53 is shown as having frangible pin or screw 24 connecting such rocker 53 with plate locked by nut 26.
This plate 25 haskey connection with spindle 27 extending through the front plate 12 of the door 7. Mounted on the spindle 27 is control handle 54'. This spindle 27 is surrounded by tube 29.
This rocker- 53 is shown as having an arm 54 remote from the arm connected with the levers 49 and 51. This arm has pin 55 engaging bolt 56 to reciprocate this bolt 56 byway of guide 57 into opening 37 of companion door 5 of this double door structure which operates only as the guide plate 33 has its bolt 36 withdrawn. Accordingly it is not possible to rock the handle 54 into bolt locking thrown position as to the door 7 until the handle 28 of this door 5 has thrown the bolt in door tion. 1 y WV hen this dual operation of throwing the 3 bolt first in the door 5 andthen in the door 7 occurs, locking of the several bolts of the bolt control mechanisinoccurs. To this end the rocker 53 is shown as having an arm 58 having an offset portion 59 with an open ing 60 therethrough. This opening60 may have bolt 61 from lock 62 enter and thus hold the arm 58 together with the rocker 53 in locked position. By thus holding the 5 into locking posirocker 53 in locked position there is an ef-' fective holding of thebolts in the door 7 as heldby the levers 49 and 51 and there is a resultant holding of the levers in the door 5 as thrown by the links 21, 23, for the rocker-22 may not be thrown into bolt withdrawing position as the bolt 56 precludes such shifting of the guard 33.
This lock 62 has extending therefrom a spindle 63 having index plate 64 in front of the door 7 as a tumbler throwing or control device for this look 62. This spindle 63 is surrounded by spindle tube 65 having front portion held by nut 66 within or back of the index plate 64. This spindle tube 65 engages lock and bolt throw holding annular flange carrying plate or member 68 which has spot-weld connected flange 69 anchoring the member 68 with the doorframe 11 on the door 7. i
Besides the utility of the looseness of the different rockers and the different bolts for acting independently to avoid any binding being transmitted from one bolt to another, there is utility in the holding of this structure in locked position against attack say by knocking 01f thelock spindle, or attempt forcing the structure by driving the lock spindle inward. Any shifting of the'lock 62 brings about a binding of the bolt 61 in opening 60. Furthermore any attempt to drill the front plate 12andshift the rocker plate 58 also bringsabout a binding action. Accordingly this structure is one doubly safeguardedin the holding value of this look as againstexterior attack. The looseness of the bolt structure permits freedom of operation atall times when the lock is released. This looseness is only sufficient to permit ready throwing of the bolts.
For more fully isolating the bolt mecha nism from the filler and thereby maintaining the structure in condition for easy operation at all times, the bolts may be housed as more clearly shown in Fig. 6. The door frame 3 as to its openings 17, 20, is shown as havingat such openings flanges 7 O of disc form aboutsaid openings tocarry and register with said respective pockets 71 about which extends the insulationfiller 14. The discs 15, 18, are shown as two parts. Each has extending therefrom sections 72, 7 3, united to form a tubular pocket havin on the outer sides thereof and parallel to the disc portions, ribs 74 providing on the in nor side of the tube lubricant carrying pockw ets 7 5 in which may be placeda hard oil or graphite. There is thus provided a simple construction for. maintenance of freedom of movement of the bolts 16, 19, as actuated by respective links 21, 23, connected through the slots 76, inthe pockets 72, 73, as housing the bolts from the insulation 14. i
This detail of bolt construction is oneinaterially contributing to'ease of operation in bolt throwinginto and out of looking poisition even though there be long'lapsesof time between the operations. 1
