Patented res. 14, 1928.
FELIX GIAM'PETER, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
moon HOLDER.
Application filed March 21,1925. Serial No.;17,f143.
This invention relates to improvements in tool holders having for an object to provide n'ieans whereby a tool to be sharpened may be adjusted'to various angles and positions with respect to a grinding element and reliably held at such angle or point.
ly and with a minimum number of operations. 1 b
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
In order that the invention and its mode of operation maybe readily understood by persons skilled in the art, Ihave in the ac companying illustrative drawings, and in the following detailed description based thereon set out one possible embodiment of the same.
Figure 1 is a front elevation showing the relative positioning of the completely assembled elements;
Figure 2 is an end elevation thereof, the arrows indicating the possible movement of the several elements;
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of FigurejQg Figure 1 is a plan view of the tool holder per se; and
Figure 5 is an end view of the movable clamping jaw of the tool holder.
Similar characters of reference designate similar parts throughout the following spe i-' fication and accompanying drawings,
This tool holder is readily attachable to a work table or other form of support and consists of a rest 6 mounting at each end a depending bracket 7 in which is formed an arcuate slot or way 8. As indicated clearly in Figure 2 this rest 6 has a longitudinal under-cut groove 9 whose function will be hereinafter apparent. Each of these brackets 7 is connected to one end of the work table or the like 10 by means of a substantially L-shaped link or arm 11 one end of which is connected to thebracket 7 by means of a bolt 12 which passes through the arcuate slot 8 in the bracket and is retainable at any point therein by means of a set screw or look nut 18, this arrangement being shown in Figures land 2. Intermediate the ends of the portion attached to the bracket 7 is a bolt 14 serving as a connecting medium between the arm or link 11 and the work table 10. A locking member 15 is arranged as shown in Figures 1 and 2 and may be tightened by means of a bar 16 when the parts have been satisfactorily positioned. The other or elbow portion 17 of the arm 11 is curved and provided with an arcuate slot 18 whose configuration conforms to that of the elbow portion 17. This curved elbow portion 17 is connected to the ends of the work table by means of a bolt 19 and set screw or the like device 20, it being understood' that the bolt extends through the arcuate slot. 1 p
With a structure as specified it is obvious that loosening of the lock nut 13 at each end of the rest 6 will permitboth lateral and vertical adjustment of the rest 6 with respect to the work table or other support 10 and the link 11. Further adjustment may be ob taincd through loosening and shifting the arm 11 so that the bolt 19 will change its position in the elbow portion 17 I A tool holder. or clamp is associated with this rest 6 and includes a substantially U shaped frame 21 carrying an undercut tongue or rib 22 which as shown in Figurefl snugly fits into the under cutgroove or channel 9 in the rest 6. The parallel arms 23 of this U-shaped frame 21 have their lower corners cut away for reception of e transverse ribs 2 1 formed at opposite ends of a slide block or jaw 25. This slide block or jaw 25 is provided at opposite ends with pairs of upstanding spaced guide members or posts 26. A vertically movable jaw or clamp member 27 is arranged between the pairs of guide posts 26 and includes apertured ears 28 adapted for vertical move ment between the posts at each end. It is between the jaws 25 and 27 that a tool '1 is clamped during the period it is being sharpened or ground. y
In order to adjustably mount the movable jaw 27 upon the slide block or jaw 251 form a pair of threaded openings 29 which open into the space between the ears 26, and
thread therein bolts 30 which extend through the aforementioned apertured ears of the clamp member 27. These bolts 30 are threaded into the openings 29 and extend a considerable degree above the guide jaws 26 whereby to allow a reasonable margin of adjustment. Obviously, difierent means may be employed to lock or fasten the bolts 30 in the block 25 so there will be no relative. movement between the two. A coil spring 31 surrounds each bolt 30 between the ears 28 and the block 25 so that when the wing nuts 82 are backed up on the bolts 30 the jaws will be moved apart to permit removal of a tool or the like. It will be noted that the coilsprings 31 are seated in sockets 33 formed in enlarged portions between the guide jaws 2G, and that these enlarged portions 34 together with the enlarged central portion 35 of the movable clamp 27 permit clamping of small tools as well as large ones. These enlargements compensate for the space required by the coil springs when they are compressed to a maxinuun degree.
The slide block 25 together with the attached parts are movable in the block frame 21 by means of an adjusting screw or bolt 36 whose inner end is threaded into a socket formed in the block 25 while its outer end is fixed against longitudinal movement in the block frame 21 as shown. A knurled finger piece 37 is fixedto the outer end of the adjusting screw 36 for obvious reasons.
The outer ends of some tools are somewhat larger than the portion engaging the grinding element, and in order to accommodate such large portions I have cut away the upper edge of the side bar 38 of the block frame 21 as clearly shown in Figures 1 and 4c. \Vith a structure as pointed out it is obvious that many types of tools may he clamped in a holder of this structure and through the several individual means employed for angling the parts, the relation of the tool and grinding wheel or other element may be accurately controlled.
Certain changes in the minor details of construction may be resorted to and such of these changes as fall within the scope of the appended claims I consider within the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
1. A clamp of the character described comprising, a frame, a jaw movable in the frame, upstanding guide posts carried by the jaw, a movable jaw, gears carried by the movable jaw and slidably arranged between said guide posts, means for moving the last named jaw toward the first j aw, and a spring device for separating the jaws at times.
2. An apparatus of the character described comprising an elongated rest having an undercut groove, a U-shaped frame slid able lengthwise on the rest and having a rib fitting in the groove,; the opposite branches of the trame having undercut shoulders, and a tool holding clamp arranged between the branches of the frame and having projecting shoulders retained by said shoulders, said tool holder being slidable transversely of the rest in said frame.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature.
FELIX GIAMPEIER.
