UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
JOHN HILDEBRAND, OF EAST'BERLIN, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT lN SEED-PLANTERS.
Specification formingpart of Letters Patent No. 16,590, dated February 10, 1857.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HILDEBRAND, of East Berlin, Adams county, State of Pennsylvania, have invented anew and Improved Mode of Seeding Grain; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accom panying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a plan view with the cover and also the shield-plate, as seen in dotted line, Fig. l, removed.
The natureot' myinvention consists ofslides, springs, and cam, hereinafter combined.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In Fig.1,-A is the seed-box; B, the beam on which the seed-box rests; O, the plow; D, the conveyer-spout through which the seed is deposited; E, the covercrs which close the earth over the seed behind the plow; F, the wheel which is attached to and supports the rear of the machine. G is a connecting-rod. one end of which is attached to the wheel F atf; or it may be attached at either of the points markedg. The other end of said rod is attached to cam H at either of the points Said cam turns on center J. On
I the same shaft with cam H is secured connecting-piece K, one end of which is joined to slide L in any convenient manner, by which arrangement slide L is vibrated.
In Fig. 2, L and M are the slides, which are connected to vibrating head'cam O by means of connecting-pieces P and Q. s s are slots in the slides for receiving the grain. R are cutoff plates placed'over the discharge-orifices in the bottom of the seed-box, under which the slides pass. 'I and U are scrapers, which are connected to connecting-pieces P and Q by means of spring-connections V W, and operate in contrary direction to the slides, as may readily be perceived by examining Fig. 2, the object of which is to effectually fill the slots in the slides with grain.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the abovedescribed spring-connection V and \V, slides L and M, scrapers 'I and U, and the vibrating head-cam 0, when arranged for the purpose herein set forth.
, JOHN HILDEBRAND.
