P. F. SCHAFFER SCREW DRIVER Filed April 12, 1927 .tatented Feb. 7, 1928 UNITEE STATES PHILLIP F. SCHAFFER, OF WILDW'OOD, NEW JERSEY.
SCREW DRIVER.
Application filed April 12, 1927. Serial No. 183,132.
This invention relates to screw drivers and has relation more particularly to a device of this kind especially designed and adapted for use in connection with shears or the like, and it is an object of the invention to provide means whereby the shears are positively held by the screw driver blade yet permitting such blade to be operated as required to either tighten or loosen the pivot screw 01 the shears to ettect a correct adjustment of the blades of the shear-s.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved screw driver whereby certain impor tantadvantages are attained and the device rendered simpler less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully setiorth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is aview in perspective illustrating a screw driver constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my inven tion with a pair of shears associated there with;
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken through the device as herein embodied with a part in elevation;
Figure 3 is a. view in side elevation of the device as herein disclosed with the wrench applied for turning the shank;
.l igure 4,- is a view in top plan oi the wrench as herein employed.
As herein disclosed, B denotes a body member or block of requisite dimensions and which is provided therothrough with an opening 1, the top wall of which being oppositely beveled, as at 2, and the side walls 3 oi which being provided with the slots 4 to provide further means whereby visual access may be had within the opening 1.
The top portion of the block or body member B at its axial center is provided with an opening 5 through which is threaded an elongated sleeve 6. the bore of which being smooth and unobstructed. The outer end portion of the sleeve 6 is provided with a head 7 angular in contour, the bore 8 of said head being reduced with respect to the bore of the sleeve 6 proper.
Freely disposed through the sleeve 6 and readily rotating therein is a shank 9 the upper portion of which being reduced, as at 10, to readily extend tlnough the bore 8 oi the head 7. This reduced portion 10 is of a length to extend beyond the head 7 and such reduced portion is provided with the flattened faces 11. The reduced POT-1 tion 10 is se 'iarated 'from the shank 9 proper by an annular beveled shoulder 12 which is adapted to have direct contact from below with a correspondingly beveled shoulder 9': interposed between the bore 8 of the head 7' and the bore 01' the sleeve 6 proper.
The shank 9 isoi a ength to have its inner end portion extending beyond the inserted end portion of the sleeve 6 and said ext-ended portion is oppositely beveled to provide a screw driver blade 15 adapted to have requisite engagement within the groove of the pivot screw comprised in a pair of shears or the like.
For use in connection with my improved screw driver is a wrench W having at one end portion a suitably formed opening 16 adapted to snugly engage with the outer part of the upper extended portion of the shank 9 for rotating the same. The wrench W is provided in its opposite end portion with a suitably formed opening 17 for engagement with the head 7 of the sleeve 6 for rotating the sleeve as desired to raise or lower the same with respect to the bottom wall 18 of the block or member B. This bottom wall 18 in its central portion is provided therethrough with an openin 19 to receive the point or free end portion of the shank of the pivot screw of shears or the like when the same are in applied position with respect to the block or member B for turning said pivot screw to obtain the correct adjustment of the blades of the shears. In practice, the shears are disposed through the opening 1 of the block or men1- ber B whereupon the sleeve 6 is turned in a direction to bring the blade 15 in requisite engagement within the move in the head of the pivot screw of the shears where by requisite rotation is given to the shank 9 to tighten or loosen the pivot screw as may be necessary in order to obtain the desired adjustment of the blades of the shears.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a screw driver constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted itor use l on by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change. and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying ont my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
1. A. device of the character described comprising, in combination. a body member having an opening thercthrongh, a sleeve threaded through a wall of the member and extending within the opening thereof, a shank ireely disposed through the sleeve and extending beyond opposite ends thereof, said sleeve being provided with an internal shoulder and the shank with an annular shoulder for contact with said inter nal shoulder. the inner end of the shank constitnting a screw driver blade. a
2. A device of the character described comprising, in combination. a body member having an opening theretln'ough, a sleeve threaded through a wall of the member and extending Within the opening thereof, a
shank freely disposed through the sleeve and extending beyond opposite ends thereof, said sleeve being provided with an internal shoulder and the shank with an annular shoulder for contact with said internal shoulder, the inner end of the shank constituting a screw driver blade, the outer end portion of the sleeve and shank being each provided with means for rotating the same.
3.1K device of the character described comprising, in combination, a body lHCl'IllJOI' having an opening therethrough. a sleeve threaded through a wall of the member and extending within the opening thereof. a shank freely disposed through the sleeve and extending beyond opposite ends thereof. said sleeve being provided with an internal shoulder and the shank with an annular shoulder for contact with said internal shoulder, the inner end of the shank constituting a screw driver blade, the wall of the body member opposed to the wall through which the sleevEis directed being provided with an opening aligned with the bore of the sleeve.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aliix my Signature.
