My invention relates to the construction of railway ears and especially to those in which hinged doors are employed for closing hoppers through which the lading o'i the car is discharged.

The plate Ll is bent inwardly to pass over the inner edge or' the projecting leg 3 of the lange angle and entends downwardly from said leg in a plane which is preferably substantially parallel to the general plane of the side l but somewhat nearer the longitw dinal airis oi' the car than is the portion oi' the car side which is above it.. Car stakes or vertical stiifeners 5 may be secured to the outer face of the car side, the lower ends of said stakes preferably being disposed in overlapping relation to the vertical leg of the -flange angle 2. The lower edge ot the side plate extension i is preferably provided with an outstanding marginal flange 6 servn ing to stillen the lowermost portion of this part of the car, both vertically .and laterally.
The car illustrated is oi the hopper bottom type provided with a plurality ot hoppers. The structural details or only lone oi these hoppers at one side of the center line of the car is illustrated in the drawings, but it is to be understood that the construction oic the several hoppers is identical on both sides ot the car. These hoppers are formed with transversely extending troughshaped hopper plates 7 having end flanges 8 lying against the inner tace of the plate l and secured thereto by means of rivets 9. Brace plates l0 ot angular 'form may extend across the lower edges of the hopper' plate T for the purpose ot stiiiening the latter.
To close the hopper discharge openings` between the longitudinally spaced lower edges 11 oi: adjacent hopper plates 7, two hinged doors l2 are preferably employed for each opening, the doors being arranged in pairs and being hinged along their remote edges, at 13, to the lower edges oit the. hopper plate 7 and to the flanged brace plates l() by means of suitable body and door hinge members le and l5, respectively. The doors l2 may extend entirely across the car beneath the ordinary center sill construction. or the lioppers may be arranged to provide arropeningr for the center sills. lloth ot these forms of construction are well known in the art and the invention is equally applicable to either. In either form ot construction itis customary to employ a Stift eninar beam, such as 17, which is secured to the door near the 'tree edge thereof. ln the illustrated embodinient ol my invention the beam 17 is ot bulb angle form, its short lear engaging the undersuri'iace of the door and its long leg outstanding therefrom. The .st-iifening member 17 is preferably disposed so that one ot its legs projects outwardly from the underside ot the door in spaced relation to the tree edge ot' the latter. while its other leg, which engages and is secured to the door, extends away from the door hinge toward the `tree edge of the door. The bulb angle 17 may be of heavy section and preferably is ot less length than the full width of the c ar. Secured to the outer ends of the member 17 are door arms 18 which project. outwardly beyond the plane of the side `plate, extension 4. These door arms are preferably ot' somewhatless weight per foot than thebulb angle stilleners 17 and may conveniently be in the l'orm ot angle irons. One leg of each of the angle irons 1S liesagainst and secured to the hach ot the corresponding hnlbiangjle 17, while the other leg of the angle engages the under surtace of the adjacent door plate l2 and is rigidly secured thereto. Toward their outer ends the door arms 1S are bent or angled downwardly away from the door so as to project outwardly beneath the lower edge ol the neighboring portion ot the car side extension plate il. The flanges 19 of the extension angle irons or door arms 18 form ledges or seats adapted to be engaged by door supporting hooks 20 pivotally mounted `upon the side of the car. These hooks, the construction of which is now well known in the art and therefore need not be described in detail, are pivoted to the` car side plate Ll by rivets 2l passingr through suitable pivot baclets 22 which themselves are rigidly riveted to the said extension plate. Creinean, each ot the door arins 1S being lorined at its outer end with an aperture 2l) through which a reinovable lever or pryingbar (not shown) niay be inserted lor 'forcing one or the other oi the doors to closed position. rlhe lever receiving apertures 29 are preterably disposed in substantial alineinent longitudinally ot the car.
ln oar construction of the present type it not infrequently happens that the use ot a prying lever in conjunction with lever receiving apertures .29 in the nianner conteni plated in the Creinean patent, above reieri-ed to, is rendered impossible because certain parts olz the car interfere with the necessary movement ot the lever. ln the present embodiment ot iny invention, for exainple, the insertion ot the door prying lever through the holes 29 would result in causing the lever to contact with the flange 6 at the lower edge of the side plate extension fl. Such an occurrence inigh well cause personal injury to the traininan. ln order to overcome any such di'liiculty oit operation ot the removable pryingbar, each door arm ld, in addition to being provided with the holes 29, is provided with a lever receiving hole 30, the holes 29 and 30 ot each arin being` in spaced relation and the holes preierably being in alineinent with each other. llliith such a construction the removable door prying lever inay be entered through the hole 29 ot one arin and extend into the hole l0 ot the adjacent arin, thus causing the lover to stand iu au obliquo position .auch that its outer ond will extend mitwardly away ,troni the ear and come withiu 'onvenient reach ot the u'orltinan.

3. it .railway car having a side and a floor, the said side extending slightly below the lines of the floor and being provided with a marginal flange along its lower edge, a door in said floor, a door supporting ineinber pivoted upon the car side and adapted to support said door, said marginal flange being interrupted to clear said supporting ineinber, an arin carried by the door and ei;- tending outwardly troni the edge thereof, said arin being adapted to cooperate with said supporting ineinber to support said door in closed position, and a rein-forcing member attached to the inner Jface of the car side to reinforce the latter at the point where the said marginal flange is interrupted.

A railway car having a side and a floor, the said side extending slightly below the lines oit the tloor and being provided with a marginal flange bordering its lower odge, a door in the floor of the Car, a door supporting niernber pivoted upon the car side, said car side being notched adjacent said door supporting ineinber and said marginal flange being interrupted so as to clear said pivoted supportingr member, an arin carried by the door and extending outwardly troni the edge thereot` and adapted to co operate with said pivoted supporting nienr ber to support said door, said arin extending beneath the notched portion of the car side and projecting outwardly beyond said side1 and a reinforcing ineinber attached to the inner tace ot the said side to reinforce the latter at the notched portion thereof.

A railway ear having a side, a tloor having' a discharge opening therein, a pair of inclined doors hinged to the car body and adapted to close said discharge,opening, door arms respectively.secured to said doors and extending outwardly beyond the car side, and means movably mounted upon the "ar sidefor cooperating with the respective arms to maintain said doors in closed position, the lower edge ofV said side adjacent the free edges of said doors being inclined to correspond substantially to the inclination oi' said doors, and the said side being provided. at its lower edge with stiifening means, portions of which entend in opposite directions with respect to the plane of the said side or" the car.

7. A railway car involving a door hinged lo the car body, an arm carried by said door, and means for cooperating with said arm to support said door, said arm being provided with a. plurality of means for alternatively receiving and cooperating with a removable door prying lever.

A railway car involving a side sheet, a. door having a discharge opening therein, and a pair of hinged doors tor closing said opening having their lree edges adjacent each other, an arm carried by each door and extending outwardly beyond the side .sheet to cooperate with door supporting members, the doors being above the plane ot the lower edge of the side sheet, and the side sheet being notched adjacent the free edges ot the doors to receive the said door arms.

A railway ear involving a Side sheet, a hopper, and a hinged door for the hopper, the bottom edge out the side sheet being disposed in a plane below the lower edge of the door, an arm carried by the door and extending outwardly beyond the side sheet, and means movable into engagement with the said arm Yfor supporting the door in closed position, the said bottom edge of the side sheet being notched to receive the door arm so as to permit the said means to engage the door arm at a point above the general plane of the bottomedge of the side sheet.

A railway car having a side and a Hoor, a hinged door in the ioor of the ear for Controlling the discharge of lading there from, and means for supporting the door in Closed position involving a movable member and a iXed member, one oi said members being Carried by the door and the other by the ear, the lower edge of the car side being disposed below the door opening and being notched so as to permit the saidmovable member to move into door supporting engagement with the iXed member at a point above the general level of the lower edge of the side sheet.
