EXPLOSION-ENGINE CYLINDER.
Application filed June 1, 1926, Serial No. 113,017, and in Italy June 15, 1925.
The present invention relates to combustion engines and more particularly to cylinders of engines of the kind in which each cylinder is provided with an opening leading from outside to the combustion space for the purpose of removingsoot and scales therefrom and has a removable plug intended to close said opening.
The present invention has for its object the provision for water circulation through said plug closing the cylinder'cleaning opening and according to the present invention said plug is made hollow and the space within it is put in communication with the water jacket ofthe cylinder for the purpose of cooling it; according to a further feature of this invention said water jacket has ports in its outer portion and the said plug has a flange abutting against said water jacket portion and provided with ports registering wit-h the water jacket ports.
A further feature of this invention is the provision of means in the water jacket for assisting the water circulation through said plug.
On the annexed drawing is shown by way of example an embodiment of the present invention and Figure 1 is a side view of a block of cylinders of an explosion engine with a portion in sectional view and with the feature of the present invention embodied therein;

Figure 3 is a sectional View of a separate plug on enlarged scale;
Figure 4 is a view of the plug as viewed in the direction of the arrow IV in Fig. 3;

As shown in Figures 1 and 2, on one side of the cylinder block 1, in the wall of each cylinder in register with the explosion chamber of the same (shown by 14:) is provided a port 2 having any desired shape and lead iag to engine cylii'ider explosion chamber, said port being encircled by walls separatiug it from the water jacket 5.
Said port is closed by means of a plug referred to in its whole by 3 and hereinafter particularly described, which is fastened in position by means of screws e passing thrrm 'h a portion of said plug and enaw threaded holes 7 of the water P s, ir l fiziprises a liolhiw body adapted to project through the water jacket space and to flush with the internal wall of the cylinder chamber 14, and an enlarged hollow section which provides a head 6 extending outwardly with respect to plug body 3; the hollow of said head is in communication with the hollow of body 3.
The wall of head 6 has enlarged portions passed through by holes 8 intended to receive bolts l fastening the plug in position on the cylinder, and the front portion of the head provides a wall 16 adapted to abut on the cooperating wall 17 of the water jacket wall. 7
In registering portions of said water jacket and plug head, walls are provided ports 10-9 putting the hollow of said plug in communication with thespace inside the water jacket; moreparticularly said ports 910 are provided along the entire periphcry of head or flange 6 of the plug and co operating seat of the water jacket wall, a portion of them being thus located under the plug body and another being above said plug body.
When the plug is in position on the cyl inder as shown by FigureQ, the cooling water flowing through water jacket 5 enters the hollow of head 6 through the lower ports 10 and 9 and flows through the plug hollhw, it being then discharged through top ports 9 and 10 into the top portion of the water jacket 5.
In order to improve the water circulation through the plug, in the top space of the water jacket above said seat 2 and plug 3 is provided an upwardly projecting bafile or partition 11 connected with transverse partitions 12 extending from the adjacent wall t of the water jacket to said partition 11, said partitions 11-12 providing inside the water jacket 5 a pocket in which open the top ports 9-10 and which in turn opens through ori-- fice 13 into the top portion of the water jacket 5.
Thus the water which is strongly heated in plug 3 owing to its slow circulation through the same, is discharged into the top portion of the water jacket where the circulating water is very hot, and is conveyed directly to radiator (not shown); thus a uniform and correct circulation is promoted through plug 3, j p
