HERMAN FRITZ, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN VENTILATING-REGISTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 165,721, dated July 20, 1875 application filed May 24, 1875.
To al L lwhom it may concern:
Se it known that I, HERMAN FRITZ, of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented an Improved Ventilating-Register, of which the iollowingisaspeciication:
This invention relates to a register to be used either as a Ventilating or hot-air register, and consists of a damper or Valve hinged at its lower end in a frame forming part of the register, and provided with a spring or springs either on the pint-al of the hinge or in some other suitable manner, whereby the damper will be thrown open when released from its catch, by means of an arrangement of cords and pulleys connected therewith, substantially as hereinafter described and claimed.
To enable others to fully understand my i11- vention, I proceed to describe the same in detail, with the aid of the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is a front View of theregister. Fig. 2 is a back View of lower part ot' same, showing daniper, hinge, and springs. Fig. 3 is a vertical section, ishowing the arrangement of cords and pulleys.
A is an ornamental front to a register. B is a traine attached to said front by lugs and screws. C is a damper tting easily in said fraine, and secured therein at the lower end by a hinge, D. The corners of the damper-plate are cut away to admit of a spiral spring, E, to be placed on the pint-al ot' the hinge at each end thereof, the said spring having one end secured to the damper, the other lying on the frame B.
In the top ot' the frame is placed a pulley, F, and at the lower end is also a pulley, Gr. Over said pulleys is passed a cord, H, one end heilig fastened to the top end of the damper, the other passing out through an opening in the front A over a friction-roller, and hangs suspended down the wall, having a ring on the end for attaching' the same to a hook. This cord is designed for closing the damper.
Vhen used as a ventilating-register, it is usually placed in the wall near the top of a room, and is operated when in that location by the oord H. When, howeverLthe device is employed as a hot-air register, it is placed in the lower part of the wall near the tloor, and is reversed so that the damper hangs suspended. In this case the cord H and the pulleys may be dispensed with, and a cord, I, substituted therefor, for operating the Valve or damper.
Having described luy invention, I claim- In a register, the combination, with the spring-hinged damper O, opening automatically, of a cord, arranged and operating as described, for the purpose of closing and retailiing said damper in any desired position, substanti-all y as specified.
HERMAN FRITZ.
