ATENT WARREN H. TAYLOR, OF STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN LOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 165,631, dated July 13, 1875 application filed January 28, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WARREN H. TAYLOR, of Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and in the State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specication.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a round-tuinbler lock, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is an outside view of the lock. Fig. 2 is an inside viewof the same. Fig. 3 is a section through the line a: w, Fig. 2. Fig. et is a section through the line y y, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a side view of one of the tumblers; and Fig. 6, a side view of one of the washers between the tumblers.
A represents the lock-plate, provided on the inner side with a suitable guide, a', for the lock-bolt B, said bolt being moved back and forth by means of a knob, C. D is the key-hub of the lock, having its outer bea-ring, by means of a shoulder or oli'set, in the lockplate, and its inner bearing in a cross-bar, b, fastened on two posts or studs, a a, projecting from the inner side of the lock-plate. The outer end of the key-hub D is of such diameter that the key E may be inserted in a slot made from the centerto the edge thereof, and including a short slot in the lock-plate, while the main part of the barrel is of such reduced diameter that the key will project through the slot in the side thereof. On the main 'part of the key-hub D is placed a spring-plate washer, d, the ends of which are notched to t around the posts a c. A tumbler, G, is then placed on the barrel, then another washer, d', and anothertumbler, G', after which the bar b is placed on the inner end of the key-hub, and fastened by screws to the posts a a. The tumblers G G are made round, as shown in Fig. 5, with a slot, e, in the edge, and with an irregular-shaped aperture, h, eX- tending from the central hole, through which the key-hub passes, and from one side of the aperature h is made a slot, From the larger portion of the key-hub projects a pin, a", parallel with the smaller portion thereof, said pin passing through the apertures hin the tumblers. In the lock-plate are two small slots, y y, one above and the other below the front end of the key-hub D. On the inner side of the bolt B, at the inner end, is a projection, f, which is to enter the slots c in the tumblers.
The operation of my lock is as follows: The bolt being pushed out and the key-hub turned, so that its slot will correspond with the bot'- tom slot y, the key can then be inserted, and by turning the same to the right until itis opposite the upper slot y, the tumblers will' be in such a position that the bolt can be moved inward, the projection f entering the slots e. When the bolt is pushed outward the key is turned downward again in either direction, when itis withdrawn, and the bolt locked in its place.
If the tumblers should be disarranged so that the key cannot be inserted fully, it is turned to the left until it can be inserted, and then turned to the right, as before, the irregular apertures h, with slots t' and the pin a, bringing the tumblers always in proper position when turning the key-hub to the left.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the slotted key-hub D, with pin x, and the tumblers G G', having apertures h and slots c t', as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 27th day of November, 1874.
WARREN H. TAYLOR.
