ALBERT Gr. DODDS, OF OHARITON, IOWA, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGN- MENTS, OF A PART OF HIS RIGHT TO E. T. BEST AND A. O. WILOOX,
OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.
TRACE-BUCKLES.
165,55l, dated July 13, 1875; application filed March 17, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT G. DODDS, of Ohariton', inthe county of Lucas and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trace-Buckles and do here by declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, makinga part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a tracebuckle, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my tracebuckle with the name-tug and trace fastened therein. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the buckle, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a protectingplate used in my trace-buckle.
My trace-buckle is all made in one piece, with two parallel side bars, A A, having their front ends slightly bent downward and connected by a heme-tug bar, 13, to which the hame-tug O is fastened in the ordinary manner. The side bars AA are provided with downward-projecting wedge-shaped flanges a to, increasing in depth from the rear to the front end, and their inner front corners connected by a curved bar, D, on which the wrought-iron tongue E is placed. The flanges a a form braces for strengthening the tongueba-r D. The rear ends of the side bars A A are curved toward each other and united into one, as shown, and across this end of the frame of the buckle is a cross-bar, G, for the rear end of the tongue to rest against. On each side of the buckle thus formed is a loop, J, which loops are for the attachment of the pad and belly-band. H represents the trace, which is fastened in the buckle in the ordinary manner. A protecting-plate, I, is then placed over the tongue E, between the trace H and rearend tongue-bar Gr. All traces tear the quickest across the hole through which the tongue passes by the constant strain and friction against the rear-end tongue-bar. By theinterposition of the protecting-plate I this is entirely obviated.
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a trace-buckle in which the trace is held by a pivoted tongue, a detachable metal protecting-plate, I, placed on the tongue between the trace and the rear-end tongue-bar, substantially for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the side bars A A with wedge-shaped braces to a, hame-tug bar B, tongue-bar D, tongue E, loops J J, rear-end tongue-bar G, and protecting-plate I, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 9th day of February, 1875.
A. G. DODDS. Witnesses:
WM. H. PENIOK,
M. E. THoRPE.
Having thus fully described my invention, I
