Patented July 13, I875.
INVENTOB ATTORNEYS.
HUGH P. BUFFON, OF CLEVELAND, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN GLOBE-VALVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 165,537, dated July 13, 1875; application filed May 11, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGH P. BUFFON, of Cleveland, in the county of Henry and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Check-Valve; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which the figure is an elevation, partly in section.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawing and then pointed out in the claim.
A represents the body or case of valve; B, the plug, calculated to close the valve by turning one half revolution; 0, a cover, calculated to screw 011 the body with a thread; D, a cap to cover 0, designed to admit a small amount of packing to prevent leakage of steam or water. E is a check-valve, which works inside ot' plugB and has its seat in body A. Cap D is calculated to screw on cover 0 with a thread, in order to adjust the plug B to its seat by screwing down a trille closer with a wrench. Plug 15 is calculated to fit nicely in cover 0, and should fit as closely as possible, so as not to cause too much friction.
This valve will need no grinding, as most valves do, in order to keep them from leaking. The more this is used the more even will be the seat. \Vhere plug B fits into body A, it
should also fit very closely, and be a trifle smaller at the bottom than at the top, so that, as it wears, it may still fit closely to the sides.
The notch in plug B can be made larger, in order to discharge more water.
In a great many instances, where machinery stands for a few hours and the steam is allowed to get low, the pressure is lessened on the top of check, while the tank (above boilers) causes a pressure under the check that results in admitting the water to back up through the pump. This is avoided by my valve, while, where a check-valve and a stop-valve are both required, my invention will answer the purpose of the two.
At the smallest end of plug B there is a small wheelby which the plug may be turned either to theright or left. This wheel is marked directly over the spill, so that the operator may know whenthe valve is open and closed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- The combination, with a hollow plug-valve, of a check-valve, having its seat in a partition formed in the valve-case, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
HUGH P. BUFFON. Witnesses:
THOMAS HALL, J. L. ELLINGSWORTH.
