LAMP SHADE. I
Application filed February 20, 1925, Serial No. 10,517. Renewed November 4, 1927.
The invention relates to a lampshade, and the object of the invention isto provide a simple, improved, exceedingly inexpensive, attractive and neat, satisfactory, and durable lamp shade.
With theabove object in view, as well as others which will appear as the specification proceeds, the invention comprises the construction, arrangement and combination of parts as now to be fully described and as hereinafter to be specifically claimed, 1t be ing understood that the disclosure herein is merely illustrative and intended in no way in a limiting sense, changes in details of construction and arrangement of parts being permissible so long as within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification,
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of the improved lamp shade;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view thereof;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan view of a blank with reinforcement piece attached, from which the shade proper can be made;
Fig. 4: is a still larger plan view of the reinforcement piece of Fig. 3, detached from the blank for producing the shade proper;
Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view on line 5-5 in Fig. 3;
Fig. 6 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view on line 6-6 in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary sectional view on line 77 in Fig. 6.
With respect to the drawing, 10 (in Fig. 3) denotes a flat blank of parchment or other suitable material for providing the shade proper. To this end, the blank is bounded at. its outer margin by a circumference 11, at its inner margin by a circumference 12, and at its ends, which are adjacent each other, by lines 13 and 14 extending between.
the circumferences 11 and 12, to provide a part-disc preferably of area greater than onehalf of a disc, whereby the blank can be rolled to shape defining the bounding wall of a cone frustrum.
In Figs. 1, 2 and 6 the blank 10 is shown rolled with ends lapping, 15 representing the circular opening at the small end and 16 the circular opening at the large end; of the produced cone-frustrum-bounding-wall.
Between the circumferences 11 and 12 of the blank 10 and adjacent the lines 13 and 14: thereof are holes 17 adapted to receive small fasteners 18 0f commerce.
The fasteners 18 are shown in Figs. 1 and as through the holes and bent over to permanently provide the cone-frustrumbounding-wall and insure that the openings 15 and 16 will remain circular.
Numeral 19 (in Fig. 1) denotes a reinforcen'ient piece of parchment or other suitable material, which is a part, desirably greater than one-half, of a band or ring, the outer margin of the band or ring being bounded by the circumference 20, the inner marginby the circumference 21, and the ends by the lines 22 and 23 extending between the circumferences and 21.
The reinforcement piece 19 is adapted to be applied to the blank 10 while flat, adjacent the inner circumference 12 thereof, so that, preferably, the margins 12 and 21 coincide, with margin 20 a slight distance from margin 12.
In Figs. 3 and 5 the reinforcement piece is shown secured to the blank 10 by eyelets 24 of commerce. This application of the reinforcement piece is made before the blank is rolled. Desirably, the reinforcement piece is applied so that its end portion 25 extends beyond the line 13 of the blank 10 and its end portion 26 is within the confines of the opposite end of the blank, in such manner that when the blank is rolled, the end portions of the reinforcement piece abut, as indicated at 27 in Figs. 2, 6 and 7, at a location a slight distance from the inter-lapping edges of the blank.
Numeral 28 indicates a shade holder of I The manner of associating the assembled shade proper and reinforcement piece with the shade holder is best disclosed. in Figs. 1, 2 and 6. In said figures, 33 are fasteners of commerce, larger than the similar fasteners 18, each including a head 34 with bendable legs 35 adapted to be passed through open ings 36 in the flange 32 of the shade holder and through openings 37 in the eyelets 24, to
be bent down against the inner face 38 of the reii'iforcement piece, 39 representing the bentdoWn parts of the legs 35. As illustrated, the legs of each fastener e3 are bent in opposite directions to securely clamp and hold the flange 32 to the shade proper. Preferably, when the openings 36 and 37 are in alignment, the small end of the shade proper engages the under face of the body 31 of the holder, and the free end portion 4:0 of the flange which desirably extends inwardly in about the manner shown, engages an outer circumference of the shade proper intermediate its ends. See Fig. 6.
It will be evident that when the several elements as described are as:- inbled in the fashion set forth, a unique, satisfactory and durable lamp shade of simple and economic construction is produced.
The internal thread of the shade holder is for assembling said holder and its attached shade with an external thread of a socket or the like. Clearly, the holder could be supported in some di'lterent manner, not shown.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A lamp shade comprising a shade proper consisting of a blank of material rolled to hollow conical shape, a reinforcement piece having free end portions, eyelets securing said reintorcen'ientpiece to and against said shade proper adjacent its small circular end, a shade holder including a'flang'e about said reinforcementpiece and the portion of the shade proper having said piece, and fasteners extending through said eyelets and said fia ige and securing said shade proper in said holder.
Signed at Bridgeport, in the county of Fail-held. and State of Connecticut, this 16th day of February, A. 1)., 1925.
