UNITED STATES ERNEST E. YALXLEY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
CONNECTING PLUG.
Application filed May 26, 1924. Serial No. 716,003,
My invention relates to connecting plugs and to circuit connecting clips which may be employed to forni parts of the plugs, these clips serving to receive other plugs that constitute the terminals of conducting cords that are to be electrically connected with the plug contacts. The plug of my invention in cludes a tubular handle enclosing the clip or clips that are included in the plug struc- ]0 ture for the purpose of receiving the plug ends of the conducting cords. This handle is furnished with an internal shoulder at its heel to engage the heel of the terminal plug of a cord while this terminal plug is still received in the plug clip, whereby accidental separation of this clip and cord plug is prevented.
The clip of my plug, itself, includes novel characteristics individually7 and in association with a complemental clip if the plug employs both tip and sleeve contacts. The clip of my invention includes a base plate and a leaf spring assembled with the plate, this leaf spring having a portion upon one side of the plate and being curled over the opposite side of the plate to provide a socket for receiving the terminating plug of a Cord. iVhenever such a terminating plug is received in a clip socket, thus provided,
and leaf spring since the pressure exerted by the inserted plug tends to bring the plate and spring more firmly into assembly or at least does not tend to separate these parts. The foregoing and other characteristics of my invention will be described in connection with the accompanying drawingl in which Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a plug constructed in accordance with the preferred embodiment of the invention; Fig. 2 is a view taken at right angles to the direction in which Fig. 1 is taken, this figure showing the plug mainly in section and partially in elevation; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3 3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4 4 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 5 5 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 6 is a perspective view illustrating the preferred formation of the plate entering into the construction of one of the clips.
The plug illustrated includes a metallic tip contact 1 and a metallic sleeve contact 2 which surrounds and is spaced apart from the tip shank 3 that is screwed into body 1. The adjacent ends of the contacts l and 2 are there is no tendency to separate the plateseparated by any suitable form of spacer 4. The sleeve contact 2 has a heel or body portion 2 which is exteriorly threaded to receive the hollow plug handle 5 that is screwed thereon, this hollow plug handle being of insulation. The plug contacts 1 and 2 areelectrically and mechanically assembled with the metallic base plates 6 and 7, having overlapping angular ends 6', 7', the end 7 having an engagement with the sleeve heel to constitute an electrical continuation of the sleeve. A spacer 8 of insulation is interposed between said angular plate ends, the parts G', 7 and 8 being clamped together by the tip shank 3 when this tip shank is screwed home in the tip 1. The portions of the base plates 6 and 7 which extend longitudinally of the plug have leaf springs 9 and 10 assembled therewith against broad faces thereof by means of rivets l1 which are preferably formed of partially punched out portions of metal of the base plates, which portions are thereafter headed over in fastening the leaf springs in place. The leaf springs are curled over the opposite broad faces of the plates from where the springs are riveted to thc plates to constitute sockets 12 designed to receive the connecting plugs 13 that constitute the terminals of cords 14 which are to be connected with the main plug contacts 1 and 2. The sockets 12 are faced b v the plates 6 and 7 respectively. The leaf springs 9, 10 have U-shaped folds 9', 10 which are located abreast of the sockets 12 to make said sockets sufficiently resilient and permit them to be readily flexed from said plates by said plugs. In placing the plugs 13 into connection with the sockets 12, the hollow plug handle 5 is unscrewed to aord access to the clips that are to receive the plugs 13. lVhen the plugs 13 have been engaged in these clips the handle 5 is screwed into place. This handle is formed with or is otherwise provided with an internal shoulder 15 at its heel so placed as to be engaged by the heels of the plugs 13 while these plugs are still engaged by the clips into which such plugs were previously inserted, whereby accidental separation of the plugs 13 from the clips receiving them is prevented.
The plug shank may be locked from turning by partially splitting the angular end of one of the base plates as indicated in Fig. 6, no
the parte ot the plate enel which margin the Slot formed by the splitting being relatively Warped so as to occupy dilferent planes before the tip shank is screwed home. When the screw or tip shank ie screwed home. these Warped parte et the clip plate are forced into the .fame plane and serve, clue to the resilience of the spring metal of which the clip plete is formed, to hold the plug shank from turning. The clip plc. are prevented from turning with resectto each other by means of protubereiieee l@ which are Stamped from the plate end 6 into the insulating Spanier 8. This spacer has :i flattened eide which engages the longitudinel portion of the e ip plete 7 to prevent thie Clip plete from turning with respect to lthe spacer and es this spacer een not turn with respect to the plate 6, @Wing to the formutee tions 16, the two clip plates are held from relative rotation.
Changee may loe made Without departing from the invention.
Having thus described my invention, l claim:
The combination with a bese plete; of e leaf spring having a, mid portion riveted against one broad falce out said plate ei'irl having its end portions curled over the opposite broad fece oit Seid plete1 these leali Spring eiii'l portions forming, with seid bese plate pluri' receiving' Sockets, seid leef spring having liepefl 'telde therein located abreast oct eid eocles.
ln Witness; whereot7 l hereunto subscribe my naine.
