Description

Dec. 20, 1927.
W. YERGER HORSESHOE Filed Oct. 21. 1925 zlz'yw w.
ATTORNEY INVENTOR Patented Dec. 20, 1927.
WILL YEBGER, WEST PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
HORSESHOE.
Application filed October 21, 1925. Serial No. 64,014.
This invention relates to improvementsin horseshoes, the general object being to provide removably secured calks upon the toe and heel pieces of a horseshoe with sharpened or pointed projections thereupon for the invention further includes the follow ing novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawing Fig. 1 is a bottom plan view ofa horseshoe with my present invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, and
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of one of the removably secured calks.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates the conventional form of horseshoe having the arcuate enlarged toe piece 11 integral or welded on while large and small heel pieces 12 and 13 are likewise provided upon the respective ends of the horseshoe, the large heel piece 12 being arranged upon the outer side of the horseshoe 10. My in vention consists in the construction and provision of removably secured calks constituting threaded shanks 14 adapted to be threaded within the toe piece 11 and heel pieces 12 and 13, respectively, these calks having each an angular head portion 15 provided upon the outer end of the shank 14 while the conical projection 16 is provided upon the outer side of the angular head 15 thus exposing a relatively sharp traction surface thereupon.
It will thus be noted from the foregoing description and accompanying drawing that this invention provides an exceedingly useful and advantageous attachment for use upon all types of horseshoes, which will be greatly appreciated by drivers and wagoners, especially in icy and slippery weather, owing to the desired traction surface exposed from the angular heads 15 of the shanks 14 which will penetrate icy and slippery roadways in obliterating slipping, falling, and the ultimate breaking of the animals limbs meaning the entire loss of the respective beast of burden.
It is to be remembered that a horse wears the outside of his shoe more rapidly than the inside, therefore the outside heel pieces 12 are made larger and higher than the inside or small heel pieces 13 to take up this extra wear, allowing ample and sufficient metal to tap a hole or opening for the insertion of the removably secured calks. The
heavier outside heel pieces 12 tend to keep the feet apart while in the act of walking or running, preventing striking and cutting, permitting extra wear, and giving the horse a better toe hold or grip.
The invention is susceptible of, various changes in its form, proportions, and minor details of construction, and the right, is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what is claimed is A horseshoe having an arcuate-shaped toe piece, heel pieces secured to the respective ends of the shoe upon the same side thereof as the toe piece, one of said heel pieces being of greater thickness throughout than the other heel piece, each heel piece having an opening therein; and calks each including a threaded shank to be screwed within an opening in the heel piece, each further having an angular head, and a conical projection extending from the outer side of the head, the conical projections themselves being of the same length but projecting to different extents from the shoe owing to the difference in the thickness of the heel pieces.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
WILL YERGER.
