GAS BURNER.
appiicaaon mea may 1v, 1927. serial No. mami.
will be eiiciently preheated before being ig\ nited and also wherein an even distribution of the gaseous mixture to the burner parts will be had, thus producing a more intense and eilective flame and making for economy in fuel.
A particular object of the invention is to provide a burner which will be simple in construction, which will have few number of parts and which may be cast and thus inexpensively produced.
A construction designed to carry out the invention will be hereinafter described, together with 4other features of the invention.
The invention will be more readily understood from a reading of the following speciication and by reference to the accoinpanying drawings, in which an example of the invention is shown and wherein:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of aburner constructed in accordance with my invention, a portion being in section,
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on thel line 2-2 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a plan view of another form of burner,
Fig. 5 is a plan view of another form in which the invention may be carried out,
Fig. 6 is a plan view of still another form of the invention,
Fig. 8 is an underside view of the burner In the drawings the numeral 10 designates an elongated .tubular shank having an enlarged end 11 which is open to admit air and provided with a transverse spider 12. A gas cock 13 is inserted in the aperture of the spider for supplying gas to the shank. The central portion of the shank is contracted, .as is indicated at 14, to provide a venturi effect. s
"The shank has a head 15 at its discharge end which is provided with an upstanding annular flange 16. Within the ilange and at the bottom thereof is a horizontal disk or partition 17 having a central orifice 18. The disk and flange constitute a distributing chamber for the gaseous mixture and the shank provides, in connection with the head, a conductor for conveying the-gaseous mixture to the distributing chamber.
A flat circular burner cap 19 is provided on its under side with an annular circular boss 20 provided with closely spaced radial channels 21. Retaining lugs 22 depend from the boss so that when the cap is placed in position the boss will rest on the upper edge of the flange 16 and the lugs will engage the inner wall of said flange so as to prevent lateral or radial displacement of said cap. The channels co-acting with the upper edge of the flange will provide radial ports for the escape of the gaseous mixture around the margin of the cap.
An important feature of the invention is a downwardly tapered stud or spreader 23 depending from the center of the cap through the orice 18. The stud does not fill the orifice but leaves an annular space,
as is clearly shown in Fig. 2. The gaseous l mixture rising through the orifice 18 will be caused to spread by the upward flare of the stud and thus equally distributed to the channels 21. It is obvious that the burner cap 19, the head 15 anda portion of the shank 10 will become hot, thus preheating the gaseous mixture. This will be articularly true of the partition 17 and t e stud 23 with which the said mixture comes in direct contact. The mixture will be evenly distributed and thoroughly incorporated with suilicient air to promote an economical combustion.
Figs. 1 and 2 show a single type of burner, butin carrying out the invention it is possible to obtain more economical results by using a manifold and a plurality of burner caps. In Figs. V3 and 4 I have shown a shank 10 constructed similarly to the shank 10, except that the head 15 is provided with ears 30 whereby it may be bolted to a manifold 31. The manifold may assume the angular shape as is shown in Fig. 3 or it may have the shape as shown in Fig. 5. At each point Where it is desired to form a burner an annular flange orcollar 32 is provided in the top wall of said manifold and in each flange is formed a transverse partition 17 having an oriiice 18. The burner cap 19, as is shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 8, is fitted onto the flange the saine as is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. In Figs. 6 and 7 I have shown a longitudinal manifold 40 to which the shank 10 is attached and which has the flanges 17 and orice 18 for receiving the caps 19 the same as in the other forms.
It will be seen that in the forms illustrated in Figs. 3 to 7 inclusive, that one source of gas and air supply is used for several burner caps and by such an arrangement a more economical burner is had, because an increased opportunity will be given to consume the gaseous mixture which is supplied. Further, the manifold will be compact and its walls will be thin so as to readily heat and thus aid in preheating the gaseous mixture. It will be seen that b lifting the caps 19 the burners will be rea ily cleaned and no bolts'or other fastenings are required. The stud 23 is a very important feature of the invention.
Various changes in the size and shape of the different parts, as well as modifications and alterations, ma be made Within the scope of the appen ed claims.
WhatI claim, is:
'1. In a gas burner, a gas and air conductor, a distributing chamber having an upu standing ilange surrounding its upper end and provided with an orifice in its bottom receiving the gaseous mixture from the conductor, a burner cap having an annular boss on its under side rovided with radial channels restin on t e flange of the chamber, lugs depen ing from the cap and en agin the flange to hold the cap against atera gas distributing chambers Within the flanges' having orifices in their bottoms receiving gas from the manifold, and burner caps, one resting on each flange, each cap having radial gas outlets and a central spreaderstud Sepending through the orifice of the cham- In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
