This invention relates to the manufacture of shoes and particularly to means for con-- trolling and guiding a strip of material during the performance of an operation thereon.

In order to facilitate theadjustment of button gage 7 0, the'latt'er is clamped'to an arm 74 provided with a threaded stem 76 re ceived in a threaded aperture formed in a 7 lug 78 carried at'the end of a stem 80. Stem 80 projects from a block 82slidably mounted in ways 84 carried by an arm 86 projecting from guard plate cap 14. A screw 88 projecting through a slot in arm 86 -is utilized to clamp block 82 in adjusted position lengthwise ofarm 86 so as to permit the adjustment of button gage 70 toward and from the fastening-inserting 'instrumentalities.
, By rotating arm 74 the button gage 70niay be adjusted both transverselyof the line of feed of the workand vertically. The amount of verticalmovement corresponding to the transverse adjustment which is ever necessary is so small as to be negligible. 3 On the other hand, by rotating arm 74 through one I or more complete revolutions any necessary v60 amount of vertical adjustment can readily be obtained. As illustrated, lug 78 is split at 90 and a screw 92 is provided to clamp stem 76 and arm 74 in-adjusted position. I
' While the operation of the device will probably be apparent from the foregoing description, it may be remarked that as the machine operates awl 1O feeds the work, both thestrip and the shoe or shoe part to which it is being attached, through the machine.v
Thus the awl moves downwardly, pierces the work, moves forwardly and is withdrawn. Then" the driver comes down and. inserts a fastening in the hole formed by the awl. Slot 54 guides the strip to the awl and driver in the first instance, button gage 70 also assisting in the positioning of the strip and forming a curved abutment about which the a strip may be bent as the operator swings the work while operating about a curved edge such as the rear portionof a heel or the toe of a shoe. Thus one edge of thestripis'eir' gaged by the closed end of the slot 54 and. the other edge of thestrip, passing through the open end o'fthe slot, is engaged by but ton gage 70. V i
While theinvention is illustrated herein as used in connection with the-nailing of a continuous strip of randing, it should be understood that it is also applicable to the attachment of individual rands Whether molded or otherwise, as well as other strip material such as Weltingor the like.
