' Application rues December 27,1926. Serial No. 157; 276.
The object of the invention is to provide a bird cage or" similararticle which may be built up of a plurality oftubula'r elements or-straws, or similar devices, which may be obtained upon the market, in standard lengths-, the agrticle including a body por tion formed: in a particular manner, and by the use of a particular method, a bottom with which tlfebody is connected, and -a;-top uspension e ce,,.a a more tel y disclosed belowi I I r WVith the foregoing and other objects in View, the invention consists in the novel con struction and arrangement of elements described, illustrated and claimed, it being understood that modifications maybe made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention also consists in the method of assembling the device.
In the drawings forming plication, p
Figure 1 is a view of the complete device or construction in elevation.
a Figure 2 is a detail view partly in section and partly in elevation, showing an end portion of one of the elements, or straws, employedin the construction of the device, a particular joint being provided for.
The bottom 10 is surrounded by a wire ring 11, with which it has connection, and the elements forming the side walls of the cage are connected with the ring, andproject below the latter in order to providethe structure illustrated in the lower portion of Figure 1. An upper metallic ring 12 is of substantially the size of the ring 11, and constitutes an upper element for the body por-v straws of one. series are 'at an angle with those of the other. Two elements 13 and 14 are first connected at a given point, as shown at 12', being secured to ting 12, so that a plurality of pairs are provided, spaced at suitable intervals, and these elements 13 and 14 of each pair may be assumed to be suspended fromring 12 during the process of.
part of this ap- At this stage there isone series. of straws connected near opposite ends, with the rings 11 and 12-, while the straws otthe other series are connected only at the upper per tionthereof, that is, with ring 12.
.lnrorider to secure theproper position of "the' straws of'the' series connected at bot-h ends, I provide partial relative rotation, of one-"ring 11 or 12; with reference to theother, and in-meantime the. straws of the otherse- 1118s may be inthei-r original position, that is, depending, without attachment of thelower' ends or near'thelower ends.
Assuming that the straws of the series fully connected are then in proper inclined position, those straws connected only at their upper ends are moved to the position desired and are separately secured, by tying, or attaching to ring 11, near the bottom. It will 'be observed therefore that all of the straws of one series are positioned at one time, and then the straws of the other series are positioned independently and individuallyand are then secured.
The cover comprises a plurality of straws 15 which are secured to ring 12 at such points as will permit-straws 15 to project downwardly and outwardly, and the upper ends of straws 15 are secured to metallic ring or other form of ring, shown at 16.
A particular form of joint for effecting connection is shown in Figure 2, and the end of the straw'is provided with a V shaped slot 18 adaptedto be connected with ring the ends of the fork in the straw projecting on opposite sides of the ring. A needle 19 now draws a thread 20 thru the forked end or prongsfand provides for the completion of the joint. i
Connected with ring 16 are elements such I as straws 22 which extend to a ring such as 23, and the latter is suspended by means of other similar elements 24 adapted for con- V nection with ring 25. This provides for a flexible type of connection, and for the suspension from a suitable point of-a cord or string such as 26 by means of which the annular or other form of element 27 may be hung or mounted. This device last named maybe in the form of a swingin which the artificial bird 28,is positioned It is not however, necessary that the device be regarded as of purely ornamental character, as a cage for practical use may be built up in rse eing made is? an en an Opening,
no a similar manner, suitable provision of or for the temporary detachment of one or more elements of the wall or top.
.[t is intended that the device shall serve in part an educational or amusement purpose, and that the elements may be prepared and sold in knock-down form to be prepared and assembled by the purchaser or whoever may undertake to proceed with construction,
along the lines indicated.
Having described the invention what is claimed is 1. In a device of the class described, a body portion constituting an open work structure of approximately circular form, a bottom for the body portion, and a top therefor, said top inchidhng a ring and members intending outwardly from the ring and over the edge of the body, these members being lorkedat their inner ends for cooperation with the ring, and being; secured to the ring and body, and means for suspending the body and top from said ring.
2. The method of forming a cage like structure which consists in connecting the upper ends of spaced elements in pairs with a frame member, and in connecting the lower end of one member of each pair with a second and lower frame member, producing relative rotatable inovr-nnent between the frame to carry the elements secured at both ends thereof to a position at an acute angle with reference to each frame, and then movinf; individually, in the opposite direction, those elements secured at only one end and connecting these elements with the lower frame at angles corresponding with the angles first named.
In testimony whereof I afiixmy signature ARTHUR narnonn DAVIAU, M. ;o.
