Description
J. B. ASTON. Mode of Blackwashing Mqlds. N0.165,I96 Patentdlulyfi,l87'5.
mun 1 Attorneys UNI ED STATES PATENT Orrron JOHN B. ASTON, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPRQVEMENT IN MODES OF BLACK-WASHING MOLDS.
Specificationforming part of Letters Patent No. 165,196, dated July 6, 1675; application filed November 21; 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN B. ASTON, of Pittsblirg, in the county of Allegheny and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in BlacklVashing Molds; and do hereby declare that the followin g is a full, clear, and. exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of refereuce marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in a inode of black -washing molds for cast-iron bowl-pipe, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I Will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a vertical I section of a mold with my device for black-,
washing the same.
A represents a mold for casting that class of pipes known as bowl-pipes, said mold being formed at its upper end with the bowl B. a is the shoulder or oftsetwhich forms the bottom of the bowl B. 0 represents a circular plate or disk having its edge beveled to form the incline b.- This plate or disk is made of smaller diameter than that of the interior of the bowl B, but sufficiently large to rest on mold by the valve.
valve 0, constructed to seat the shoulder or offset a, and thus form a valve to close the upper end of the main part of the mold A. D is a handle attached to the disk or valve 0, and extending above the upper edge of the bowl.
When the mold is to be black-washed the disk or valve 0 is placed on the shoulder or ofl'set a, and the black-wash poured into the bowl on top of the valve, the black-wash being prevented from passing down into the By now raising the valve slightly, the black-wash will pass around the inclined edge I) of the valve, and down into the mold, in the form of a-hollow cylindrical sheet, so as to black-wash the entire interior of the mold.
Having thus fully described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is' I The mode herein described of black-washing bowl-pipe molds by means of the disk or on the shoulder a, as shown. r
Intestimony'that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 5th day of November, 187 4.
JOHN B. ASTON.
