Description

s. DALTON FOLDING MACHINE Filed Dec. 20, 1926 155mm Z02: Raymond di ymmm WW Y AZZarn:y s.
Patented Nov. 29,1927.
UNITED STATES P-ATENT OFFICE.
RAYMOND s. Damon, or cnnvnmuvn,
OHIO, ASSIGNOB TO THE CLEVELAND FOLDING FOLDING MACHINE.
Application filed December 20, 1926. Serial No. 155,839.
This invention relates to feeding rolls for aper handling machines and especially to I ceding rolls or use in paper folding machines.
Heretofore it has beencustomary 'to use fluted or nurled rolls in which the grooves and ridges in the surface of the rolls were parallel to the-axes. One example of such construction is shown'in the Campbell Patent No. 1,589,584, granted June 22, 1926.
It is one of the objects of the present invention to provide an improved form of nurled feeding rolls that will: be adaptedto positively gri the sheets of paper at points throug outthe length of the rolls so as to {avoid any possibility of creasing or soiling: the paper. and to insure accurate alignment of the sheets. I
' I It is a further object'of the invention to 2 provide an improved form of feeding rolls that will accomplish the above stated; objects withoutbeing more costly to manufacture.
Other objects of the invention and the features of novelty will be apparent from the following description, taken in connection with the 'acco'm anying drawings, of which: Y
Fig. 1 is an e'vation of a pair of feeding rolls embodying my invention;
Fi 2 isa transverse section thereof on I the lme 2-2 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 3 is a diagramillustrating the principles' of my invention.
Referring to the drawin 10 and Hindieats 'apair of feeding ro and, for clearness,:ythe space 12, exaggerated, it be understood thatfthis space will be restric in accordance with the thickness ofthe sheet, whether folded'or unfolded. The rolls 10 and 11 are provided with flutes 0r nurls 4. which extend spirally, as shown at 13, and
these flutes or nurls ma ing to the method described in the aforesaid Patent No. 1,589,584, or otherwise as desired.- l'e ofthe flutes or nurls 13 isfvari-j in practice, I have found that at The an 46-81319 an iral which. advances circumferential! o t e roll about of an inch in a 36 inches 4 a direction 0 the spirals is immaterial, that 50 is they may be either right-hand or lefthand spiralsQbut I prefer to make the spirals spaced be formed accord-' l o 'ves satisfactory results."-'=31he.
my signature.
of both rolls alike. In other words, I prefer to make the spirals of both rolls either right-hand or left-hand so that, on the meet ing or cooperating sides of the rolls, the flutes or nurls will extend at relatively opposite angles to the plane of the roll axes and thus cross or intersect, as illustrated in Fig. 3.
Fig. 3 may be considered as an exa gerated development, diagrammatically, o the flutes or nurls at the space 12, the flutes or nurls of the roll 10 being indicated b the full lines 14 and those of the roll 11 heing indicated by the broken lines 15. The plane of the roll axes is indicated at 16 and it will be noted that certain of the lines 14 and 15 intersect at the points 17. \7 As the rolls revolve, assuming that the movement is in the direction of the arrow in Fig.3, other intersections, such as indicated at 18, will come times, be intersecting points at which the or is gripped. aving thus described my invention, what I- claim is: ,1. In paper feedin apparatus, a pair of cooperating feed r0 s having nurled surfaces on which the nurling is arranged in similar spirals so that the sheets of paper will be'positively gripped by the cooperating sides'of the rolls at points which are spaced axiallfil-of the rolls. 2." paper feedin apparatus, a pair of cooperating feed ro s aving nurled surfaces on which the nurling is arranged so that the sheets of paper willbe positivelygripped at any time at a plurality of points Spaced axially'of the rolls. I
.3. 'In paper feeding apparatus, a pair of coo ratm feed rolls having .spirally nur ed sur aces so that the cooperating sides the rolls will positively gri the sheets of apgrat any instant at s ace points.
' testimony whereo I hereunto aflix .mmoun s. DALTON.
