WINDOW-CONTROL MECHANISM.
Application filed. August 27, 1923. Serial No. 659,658.
The invention relates to window control mechanisms and refers particularly to that type embodying a cable for actuating the window. One of the objects of the invent-ion is the provision of a simple and compact construction of window control mechanism in which the driving sheave is journalledupon a support and rotated by means extending within the sheave. Another object is the provision of a support providedwith a cylindrical bearing portion upon which the sheave is journalled and the provision of yieldable means between the cylindrical bearing portion and the sheave frictionally is engaging the sheave for retaining the same in its different positions of rotative adjustment. Further objects of the invention reside in the novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as more fully hereinafter set forth.

1 is a motor vehicle door having in its upper portion the opening 2 and in its lower portion the chamber 3 adapted to receive the window a in the nature of a glass plate which is slidable in vertical guideways in the hinge and lock upright members or pillars of the door frame. 5 is the lock board of the door extending between the hinge and lock upright members.
The support for the window control mechanism comprises the supporting bracket 6 secured to the inner side of the lock board 5 and the supporting beam 7 extending downwardly from and secured to the bracket, the lower end of the beam being secure to the bottom rail of the door. The supporting bracket is provided with the cylindrical bearing portion 8 having the internal boss 9. 10 is the driving sheave journalled on the cylindrical bearing portion 8 and provided with the pair of annular channels or grooves 11 beyond the cylindrical bearing portion and in which are secured the opposite ends of the cable 12 one of which winds up and is a vertical section thereand with the sheared the other unwinds upon rotation of the driving sheave in each direction. 13 is an internal gear upon and preferably integral with the driving sheave 10 and located beyond the cylindrical bearing portion 8. let is a pinion engaging the internal gear and secured to the handle shaft 15 which is journalled in and extends through the internal boss 9. This shaft is rotated by means of the handle 16 secured to the opposite end of the shaft.
he bite of the cable 12 extends around the idling or compensating sheave 17 and a portion of the cable between the driving and compensating sheaves is secured to the roll 18 which engagesin the channel 19 secured to the lower edge of the window 1, the arrangement being such that rotation of the driving sheave through the handle shaft, pinion, and internal gear actuates the window, the raising and lowering of the window being dependent upon the direction of rotation of the driving sheave.
For yieldably maintaining the cable taut,
at all times the idling or compensating sheave 17 is yieldably forced downwardly and away from the supporting bracket 5. As shown, this sheave is mounted upon the shoe 20 which embraces and slidably engages the supporting beam 7 and the upper en of which is provided with the transversely extending bifurcations 21 and the intermediate upwardly extending tongue 22. The supporting .beam' 7 struck-out transversely extending tongue 23 downwardly extend-ing tongue 24 passing through the transversely extending tongue. 25 is a coil spring, the upper and lower convolutions of which surround the downwardly extending and upwardly extending tongues 2e and 22 respectively, the upper and lower ends of this spring abutting the transversely extending tongue 23 and bifurcations 21 respectively.
This spring is normally under compression and thereby yieldably holds the idling or compensating sheave 17 to maintain the cad ble taut.
For the purpose of retaining the window 41 in its diii'erent positions of adjustment, we have provided the bowed spring 26 for frictionally engaging the driving sheave 10. This bowed spring is located in the peripheral groove 27 in the cylindrical bearing portion 8 of the supporting bracket, and its normal radius of curvature is less than the radius of the bearing surface of the sheave is provided with the so that the spring at all times yieldably engages this bearing surface. With this arrangement the friction offered by the spring retains the driving sheave from rotation rela-, tive to the bracket except when being dri en through the handle and intermediate connections.
The arm 28 pivotally mounted upon the bracket 29, which latter is secured to one of the upright members of the door frame, may be provided having its free end engageable with the lower edge of the window a, this arm having secured thereto the coil spring 30, the upper end of which is preferably secured to the lock board 5, the coil spring having a tension suilicient to counterbalance the weight of the window.
W hat we claim as our invention is:
1. in window control mechanism, the combination with a support, of a sheave journalled on said support, an internal gear upon said sheave, a pinion engaging said internal gear, means journaled in said support and extending within said sheave for rotating said pinion, and a flexi le connection between said sheave and the window for actuating the latter.
2. in a window control mechanism, the combination with a support having a cylindrical bearing portion, of a sheave journalled on said cylindrical bearing portion, an internal gear upon said sheave, a pinion engaging said internal gear, a shaft j0urnailed in and extending through said cylindrical bearin portion and to which said pinion is secured, and a flexible connection between said sheave and the window for actuating the latter.
3. in" a window control mechanism, the combination with a supporting bracket provided with a cylindrical bearing portion, of a sheave journalled on said cylindrical bear ing portion, means extending through said cylindrical bearing portion for rotating said sheave, and a flexible connection between said sheave and the window for actuating the latter.
l. in a window control mechanism, the combination with a supporting bracket provided with a cylindrical bearing portion, of a sheave journalled on said cylindrical bearing portion, means extending through said cylindrical bearing portion for rotating said sheave, friction means carried by the cylindrical bearing portion and yie-ldably engaging said sheave for retaining the same in different positions of rotation, and a flexible connection between said sheave and the window for actuating the latter.
5. in a Window control mechanism, the combin tion with a supporting bracket provided with a cylindrical bearing portion, of a sheave journalled on said cylindrical bearing portion, means extending through said cylindrical bearing portion for rotating said bracing the beam and carrying combination with a supporting bracket pro vided with a cylindrical bearing portion, of a sheave 3ournalled on said cylindrical bear ing portion, means for rotating said sheave,
means for connecting said sheave to the window to actuate the latter,and locking means upon said cylindrical bearing portion and yieldably engaging said sheave to retain the latter in its different positions of rotat-ive adjustment.
T. in a window control mechanism, the combination with a supporting bracket provided with a cylindrical bearing portion having an internal boss, of asheave journalled on said cylindrical bearing portion, an internal gear upon said sheave at one end of said cylindrical bearing portion, a pinion engaging said internal gear, a shaft journailed in said internal boss and to which said pinion is secured, a bowed spring mounted in said cylindricalbearing portion and engaging said sheave to retain the same in its different positions of rotative adjustment, and a cable having its opposite ends secured to said sheave, and an'intermediate portion operatively connected to the window to actuate the same. ,j
8. In a' window control mechanism, the combination with a support including a bracket and a downwardly extending beam, of a sheave journalled upon said support, means for rotating said sheave, a cable having its opposi e ends secured'to said sheave, and an intermediate portion secured to the window for actuating the latter, a compensating sheave around which the bite of said cable passes, a shoe having laterally extending portions return-bent to slidably embrace said beam, said shoe carrying said com-pensating sheave, and means upon said beam for yieldably forcing said shoe away from said supporting bracket.
9. .ln a window control mechanism, the combination with a support including a bracket and beam, of a sheave journaled upon said support, means for rotating said sheave, a cable having its opposite ends secured to said sheave and an intermediate portion secured to the window for actuating the window, a compensating sheave around which the bite of said cable passes, a shoe having return-bent portions slidablyemthe compeneating sheave, and means yieldably urging said compensating sheave away from said supporting bracket, said means including,
projecting bifurcations on thesaid shoe, an
angularly arranged tongue between said furiao cations, a tongue struck from the said beam, and a spring between the tongue on the shoe and the tongue on the beam.
10. In a Window control mechanism, the combination of a supporting bracket provided with a cylindrical bearing portion having a cut out portion in its Wall, a boss within said cylindrical bearing portion, a sheave journaled on the cylindrical bearing portion, locking means in the said out out portion of the bearing engaging said sheave,
engaging the internal gear, and a flexible connection between the sheave and the Window for actuating the latter.
