The present application constitutes a division of my application for patent for bottle filling and sealing machine filed June 25,
1923; Serial No. 647,468, and the invention herein set forth consists in an improved means for compensating for bottles or other container whose height actually exceeds" a given height-standard, so that the top of each bottle will be at a given 'levelwhen.
some other operation, as sealing the same, is later performed thereon.
'In'the drawings, Fig." 1 is aside elevation, partly in sec "cylindrical base a and a vertical non-rot-ative shaft 5 upstanding therefrom; said structure includes a fixed Cam 0 having a peripheralcam-groove c" and a hump '0 rotary structure-1s ]OL11I1Ll8dOI1 the supporting structure and rotative around theshaft b and its cam and includes aturret dand above the turret any suitablena-butment e (as the sealing head partof the'machine illustrated) for the bottles or other containers f; It is not material by what means the struc 'ture' d is rotated; nor; in "fact, which structure rotates. relatively tothe other. The machine shown is" adapted toreceive a .plurality, of bottlesat a time and hence there are shown a plurality of abutments but only one of these and the set of parts coactive therewith in. compensating are mam-- terial and will be described.
Housed by't'he base a and movable in. a vertical slot d (Fig. 3) of the turret. is a carrier 9 having a roller 9 which runs in the peripheral groove 0 of the cam 0. This carrier is penetrated by the squared portion of a stem or spindle h adapted to slide vertically in the carrier and having a depend,-
"ing trunnion h guided ina'bearing d at the lower' end of the turret (l and an tan ing tr n en. he pinn d r etherwise shows in plan, partly section,
fixed in the depending tubu'lar stud 2" ofa bottle rest 2' which may be guided in a bearing d in the upper portion of theturret and has a bottle pad, or cushion 2' Any means well known inthe art is employed to frictionally resist the movement of the plunger formed by the bottle rest and its stem it relatively to thecarrier g; in Figure 3 this .UNITEDgST'ATES PA EN OFFICE. I
is shown as a pair of friction plates held bearing against opposite sides of the squared part of the stem by sp-ringslc interposed be- 7 tween the "friction plates and set screws Z. In a vertical central slotm of the squared part of. the stem is fixed by a pinn (F ig, 4) a block a havingan' underneathdownwardly and inclined stepped surface 0. The car-- Tier also has a vertical and central slot 1? .onthe fiooror lower end surface of which slides a block 9 having an upper and downwardly inclined'stepped surface 9 to engage the surface 0 of the block 0; the block and the space receiving it and formed between surfaced and the floor of slot 19' being tapered in the present example both are tapered but it is not essential that both should be); the'block constitutes in effect a Wedgerchock and 'I so term it herein. A spring 1', coiled" about a pin 8 Which projects from a plate 9 which covers the carrier slot p and is suitably afiixed to the outer face of the carrier, normally holdsjtheblockiq inwardly (Figs. 1- anda). At a suitable point in each revolution of the rotary struc- "ture the' block q is shifted radially outwardly so that, being clear of the block 0',
the bottle supporting plunger h canvbe depressed in the carrier subject to the resist ance of its friction grip means already described. This is accomplished by the'hump or. projection c of the cam c encountering the inwardly projecting heel gf of the blockq' The compensating effected as follows: T/Vhen, as by the rise inthe cam-groove (2' shown at the left in Fig. 2, a movement as between the container supporting means g and'h i and the abutinent neans 6, one toward the other; occurs, so thatthe head of a container f'supported on the plunger orcontainer supporting member 'hz', and the i abutment means impinge against each other, the plunger will yield downwardly in the carrierif the block 9 is not present to pre vent suchyieldingand in the'present- M1511 tatien here he block is normally present by Letters Patent is:

under the plunger) said block will be displaced from under the plungerto allow such yielding at the proper time by the hump 0 of the cam as it sweeps around. Whenthe. yielding-to the full requirementotthe con tainer height is completed the-block 1s established under the plunger to thereby prevent iurtheryielding, in the present case effected by spring 1', the hump 0 having meantime cleared the block. ,j.
The invention is further not concerned with any particular purpose in obtaining positive resistance to yield otthe supporting member in the carrier after such yield has proceeded to the extent determined by the height of the container. But assuming that itiis for proper support of the containerrin the act ofsea'li'ng the same, as the sealing head 6, it will be understood that following the movement, one toward the other, as between the abutment means and container-supporting means 9 and h Z, there will be further movement, and in the present example this is effected astollows:
After the movement for compensating is effected by the rise in cam-groove 0 shown at the left in Fi 2 the peripheral camgroove t in a cam t fixed on shaft 6 depresses the abutment means until the rise in the cam-groove 0 at the right in said figure can eifect'a second movement by elevating the container supporting means, the abutment means being for this purpose suitably guided vertically in an extension of the turret d and having a roller e travelling in cam-groove t. 7 Between the two mentioned rises ot the cam-groove 0" said groove is appreciably depressed, as shown in Fig. 2 at the near side of the cam 70. Mien the roller 9 enters this part of the groove it restores the carrier to its starting position or lowest limit and the head i of the plunger hi impinging the bearing (Z said plunger assumes its original elevation in the carrier. Thereupon the block 9 will assume its normal .position (Fig. 4) it (the bottle being of proper height) it does not already occupy that position because the necessity ior compensation did not arise. v
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to, secure 1. The combination, with coacting means for exerting pressure on a container interposed between them, one of such means being adapted tic-undergo movement toward the other to a definite limit and one including a carrier and a container-tlii'ustassuniing plunger arranged to yield in the carrier from the other of said :means a distance determined by the height of the container when interposed between them on such movement, of means to move; the .inovable one or said c'oacting means to said limit, said coactive and last-named means being arranged to rotate one relatively to the other,
around an axis substantially parallel with the path of 'suchu-yielding to cause such movement, and a chock movable crosswise of andiiito said path and into chocking relation to said plunger and carrier and having its movementcontrolled" by the last n'anied means.
2. lhe combination, with coacting means for exerting pressure on aconta'in'er interposed between them, onefo't 'suchineans be'. ing movabletoward the other to a definite limit and one including a carrier a armtainer-thrustI-assuming plunger arrangedtfo yield in the carrier from the other of said means a distance determined by the height of the container, of means'to movelthe'mov able one of said coacting' means to said limit and simultaneously cause such yielding, and a chock normally urged to move crosswise ot the path or such yielding and into interposed chocking relation to said plunger and carrier, the lastnamedmeans opposing such 'inovement'ot the chock until the movable meansihas been moved to said limit and thereupon freeing the chock.
'3. The combination, with coactin means tor exerting pressure on a container inter posed between them, one of such means being adapted to undergo movement toward the other .to a definite limit and one including a carrier and a container-thrust-assums from the other of said means-a distance 'de- .terminedby the height of the "container when interposed between them on such movement, of means to move themovable one of said coacting means to said limit, said coactive and last-named means being ar ranged to rotate one relatively totheother around an axis substantially parallel with the path of such yielding to cause such movement, a chock movable crosswise of and into said path and into chocking relation to said plunger and rarrier, and means to move said chock into said relation when the mov-- nblemeans hashes-n moved to said limit.
4:. 'llhecombination, with coacting means tor exerting pressure on a Container interposed between the1n, one of such means being movable toward the other to definite limit and one including :acarrier and a container-thrust;assu=ming plunger arranged to yield in the carrier from the other of said means a distance determined by the height of the con tainen ofmeans to move the movable one of said coacting means of said limit and simultaneously cause such yielding, and a chock normally held in interposed chock- .i'ng relation between said plu-n'gerand carrier and movable crosswise of the path of:
such yielding out of said relation, the lastnamed means being adapted to move said chock out of said relation and hold it out plunger arranged to yield in the carrier ice of the same until movement of the movable means to said limit has been efi'ected and thereupon free the chock.
5. The combination, with coacting means for exerting pressure on a container interposed between them, one of such means being movable toward the other to a definite limit and one including a carrier 'member and a container-thrust-assuming plunger member arranged to yield in the carrier member from the other of said means a distance determined by the height of the conta-iner, of means to move the movable one of said coacting means to said limit and simultaneously cause such yielding, and a chock movable crosswise of the path of such yielding and into interposed relation to said plunger and carrier member to limit the yielding. one of the surfaces of the two pairs of the contacting surfaces aflorded by said members and chock being oblique to said path and also stepped.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
