GRAVE-MARKER MOLD.
Application filed May 31,
This invention relates to molds, and has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a new, novel and improved device of such class for molding grave markers, of cruciform contour, from rein forced concrete or other desirable material.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a sectional mold capable of being expeditiously set in molding position and conveniently removed from the molded article when occasion requires.
Further objects of the invention are to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a mold for the purpose referred to which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, compact, thoroughly etlicient in its use, conveniently assembled and dis assembled, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in View the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more specifically described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which fall within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is an inverted plan of a mold, in set position, in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view in side elevation of a mold when in set position.
Figure 3 is an end view of the mold when in set position.
Figure 4 is alongitudinal sectional view of the mold containing the reinforced material which is to be molded.
Figure 5 is a top plan view of the mold when in set position and containing the reinforced material which is to be molded.
Figure 6 is a section on line 66 Figure 5.
Figure 7 is a section on line 77, Figure 5 and further illustrating two of the sections of the mold in dotted lines swung to open position. a
Figure 8 is a section on line 8-8 Figure 5.
Figure 9 is a perspective View of an article formed by a mold in accordance with this invention.
The mold comprises a bottom member of 1927. Serial No. 195,491.
cruciform shape provided with a stem 1 and a head 2 formed with an upset portion 3 of rectangular contour and provided with inwardly extendinginclined sides 4 which terminate in the upset portion 3. The inclined walls 4% are spaced from the edges of the head 2.
The mold further includes a pair of wall forming members 5,, 6 which are of oblong contour and hollow. The members 5' and 6 are of the same width as the stem 1 of the bottom member, but are of materially greater height than the thickness of said stem 1. The wall forming members 5 and 6 are hinged to the stem 1, at opposite sides thereof, and the hinges employed for connecting the members 5 and 6 to the stem 1 are inclicate'd at 7 The members 5 and 6 are of the same length as the length of the stem 1 and abut against the inner side edges of the head 2. The outer side faces of the members 5 and 6 are flush with the ends of the head 2.
The mold further includes a wall forming member 8 of the same length as the length of thehead 2. The member 8 is of oblong contour and hollow and is of the same height as the height of either of the wall forming members 5, 6. The wall forming member 8 is hinged to the head 2, and the hinges are indicated. at 9. The hinges 7 and 9 are secured to the lower faces ofthe wall forminp; members 5, 6 and 8 and to the lower face of the head 2 and stem 1. The member 8 is of less width than the width of either of the members 5, 6.
The mold further includes latching plates 1.0, 11 and 12 and which also provide wall forming members. The latching plates are of the same height as the height of the members 5, 6 and 8. One end of the member 8 is provided with a keeper 13 which for a portion of its length is offset and opposes the head 2, but is spaced therefrom. The inner end of the member 5 has secured thereto a keeper 1%, which has a portion of its length offset and opposes and is spaced from the head 2. The keepers 13 and 14: are arranged in alignment, but oppositely disposed. The other end of the member 8 has secured thereto akeeper 15 which has a portion of its length ofiset and opposes and is spaced from the head 2. The inner end of the member 6 is provided with a keeper 16 which has a portion of its length offset and opposes and spaced from the head 2. The keepers 15 and 16 are arranged in alignment but are oppositely disposed with respect to each other. The inner sides of the outer ends of the members 5, 6 are provided with keepers 17, 18 and each ofwhich has a por' tion of its length offset and spaced from that member to which it is secured. The keepers 17 and 18 are arranged in alignment but are oppositely disposed with respect to each other. The plate 10 associates with the keepers 13 and 14, for latching'the members 5 and .8 and to provide a wall of the mold. The plate 11. associates with the keepers 1'5 and 16 for latching the members 8 and 6 and further for forming another wall of the mold. The plate 12 associates withthe keepers 17 and 18 for latching the members 5 and 6 and further provides another wall of the mold. The several keepers referred to are of the same height as the height .of the members 5, 6 and 8. hen the latching plates are in position with respect to the members 5, 6 and 8 and head 2 the mold r set up to provide a molding cavity of cruel:
form contourto mold an article consisting of a head 19, provided with a. cavity 20 in its front face and integral with the head 20, centrally thereof, is a stem 21', of a greater length than the width of the head. The article, such as grave marker, shown in Figure 9, is formed preferably of reinforced concrete, but any suitable material can be employed to provide the body of the marker.
If desired when the marker is molded, the bottom of the cavity 20, can be provided with any suitable inscription or design and if it be desired to provide the bottom of the concavity or recess 20 with an inscription or design the upper face of the upset 3 of the bottom member will be provided with suitable impressing devices, correspondin to the design or inscription desired, and w ich are indicated at 22 in Figure 4:;
When molding the marker a portion of the concrete is placed within the molding cavity formed by the members 5, 6 and plate 12 and after a portion of the concrete has been placed in such part of the cavity metallic bars or reinforcement, as indicated at 23 are positioned. An'additional quantity of concrete is then poured into the entire molding cavity and arranged above the upset portion 8, as well as being spaced therefrom, is a foraminous reinforcing member 24: and extending lengthwise of the molding cavity are reinforcements in the form of metallic bars 25. An additional quantity of concrete is then poured into the molding cavity, after which metallic reinforcements 26 are positioned therein. The molding cavity is then com: pletely filled with the concrete material and squared off with respect to the upper faces of the members 5, 6 and 8 and plates 10, 11 and 12. Th material is allowed to set until it becomes hardened, after which the latching plates are removed and the members *5, '6 and .8 swung clear of the molded article and the latter can then be removed.
The foraminous reinforcement 20 is substantially coextensive with that part of the molding cavity formed by the inner ends ofthc members 5, 6, the inner side of the member 8 and the latching plates 10, 11. The reinforcements 25 and 26 are of a length to extend from a point in close proximity to the member 8 to the latching plate 12. The reinforcing members 23 are of a length substantially equalto the length of the stem 21. The rods which are employed for reinforcrelation, see Figure 7.
The markers preferablyare to be molded without any inscription, and when an in-- scription is desired, it can be readily applied by using the means heretofore referred to for such purpose with the addition of fresh cement in connection witlrthe mold.
It is thought the many advantages of a mold, in accordance with this invention, and for the purpose set forth, can be readily understood, and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, yet it is to be understood that changes in the contour of the molding cavity and also in the details of construction can be had which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
