This invention relates to an improvement in match boxes and aims to provide a match box which contains a supply of ordinary,

unused or live matches and is also adapted to receive burnt or used matches, thereby relieving persons striking, the matches of the necessity of throwing the burnt match on the floor or street if no convenient receptacle therefor is available.

l A further object ist'o provide a device of this character which is of simple and durable construction, reliable and effective in operation and easy and comparatively inexpensive toy manufacture.

Referring t0 the drawings and more particularly to Figures 1 to 3, inclusive, the numeral 1 designates the tubular casing of a match box in which a tray 2 is slidably fitted in accordance with the usual practice. The present invention proposes the provision of a strip of material, designated generally at S, and which has some degree of resiliency. lThis material is bent to provide an attaching portion 3 fastened to one of the end walls of the sliding tray. Beyond the attaching portion 3 a strip of material extends over the top edge of the tray and down into the tray to la point adjacent to but vslightly spaced from the bottom thereof, the downwardly extending portion of the strip being designated at 4 and serving as a carrier or connecting' means for a partition-forming portion 5 whichextends along though slightly above the bottom 'of the tray, as illustrated in Figure 2. strip 4 .has sufficient resiliency to prevent vits n formation into the shape shown andyety maintains this shape and tends to maintain its relation tothe tray. The attaching portion 3 and the end wall ofthe tray to which itis connected are provided with registering openings 6 guarded by resilient wings 7 of triangular form,"the opening and the wings being .conveniently formed' by slitting-the attaching portion 3 of the strip andthe underlying portion of the end wall after the i manner of a cross, as shown in the drawing.

In this arrangement: there is provided a. compartment 7 forthe ordinary live matches and a compartment 8 forthe burnt or'used matches, 'the' burnt or used matches being inserted through therv openings 6and being held ,against displacement by they wings -7. The wings 7 also insuretlie rextinguishing of the match. This varrangement ofv` strip S presents its body portion to the burnt match being entered tlirough-opening 6 thus avoiding engagement of the edges 'of the strip vby the entering match and-facilitating the insertion of the match. i

In the form of the invention shown in Figures 4 and 5 the tubular casing l and the tray 2 are employed as in the other embodiment of the invention but the compartments vfor the live matches and the used matches are defined in a diferent manner. As shown in Figs. 4 and 5 a st-rip S of material having some resiliency is employed and has an l attaching portion 10 suitably fixed as by means of adhesive, riveting or the like, to the inner faces of one of the side walls of the tray adjacent one end thereof. Beyond the `attaching portion 10 the strip SY is curved across the tray as shown at 11 and is then extended longitudinally of the tray, as at' 12, the portion 12 constituting a partition or a partition-forming member which separates the interior of the tray into a compartment 13 for the livel matches and a compartment 14`for lthe used matches.
