PRINTING-PRESS INKING MECHANISM.
Application filed July 2, 1923.
The invention relates to printing presses, and more particularly to printing press inking mechanisms, and especially to a novel ductor roll actuating and regulating or controlling mechanism.
Objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in part hereinafter, and in part will be obviousherefrom, or may be ascertained by those skilled in the art by practicing the invention.
The invention consists in the novel parts, constructions, arrangements, combinations and improvements herein shown and described.
The accompanying drawings, referred 'to herein and constituting a part hereof, illustrate one embodiment of the invention, and together with the description serve to explain the principles thereof.
Of the drawings Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a portion of the inking mechanism of a printing press which exemplarily embodies the invention; and
Fig. 2 is a View, partly in top plan, and partly in horizontal section on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
The invention is shown applied to a rot-ary printing press and finds its chief usefulness and mostextensive application in connection with this kind or class of printing presses. One of the very important factors in connection with the proper inking of the printing plates or like printing instrumentality requires that there shall he a continuous, adequate, uniform and otherwise satisfactory and efficient supply of ink thereto. One of the chief factors in securing such an adequate and satisfactory inking supply and action is the proper mounting and control of the ductor roll, whereby variations in size, or otherwise, therein from various causes, such as wear, or shrinkage of the roll, may be compensated for by proper regulation of the mechanism.
The present invention is directed to the foregoing purpose, and with this end in view it embodies means for varying the extent or location ,of the path of travel or reciprocation of a ductor roll, and also for controlling and varying this path with respect to both the fountain ink roller and the inking drum between which the ductor roll oscillates or vibrates.

More particularly, means are provided for varying the length of the path of travel of the ductor roller, for varying the terminal points of this path of travel. irrespective or independently of the regulation of the length thereof, that is, means are provided for varying the length or amplitude of the path of travel and in conjunction therewith the relative position or relation of the path of travel to both the fountain ink roller and the ink drum.
Referring now in detail to the accompanying drawings, only the parts of a printing press inking mechanism which are directly involved in the present invention are shown. It will be understood that a complete inking mechanism will be provided, which may he of any known or suitable form for cooperation in the particular kind of press andfor the particular kind of work to be done.
In said embodied form, the general frame of the printing press is indicated by the reference numeral 1. An inking fountain 2, which may be of an known or suitable form. is provided, and is mounted upon the press frame. In cooperation with the ink fountain is a fountain roller 3, the shaft 4 of which is conveniently jour-naled at 5 in the walls of the ink fountain. The inking roller may be of any lmown or suitable form, and may be actuated by any known or suitable form of actuating mechanism. For instance, the roller may be either of the intermittently rotated or of the continuously rotated type, as may be preferred. The mechanism is especia ly capacitated. however, for use with a-continuously rotating fountain roller.
An inking drum 6 is shown, having its shaft 7 journaled in bearings 8, carried in the frame 1 of the printing press. It will be understood that the inking drum 6 cooperates with various other elements or mechanisms to convey the ink to the plates on the form cylinder, which additional mechanism is not shown herein. and may be of any convenient or desired form.

In the present embodied form of the mechanism, the regulating and controlling mechanism for the movements and the position of the path of travel of the ductor roll are preterably located between the arm 16 and theactuating mechanism therefor. As so embodied, a rod or link 20 is pivoted to the arm 16 at 21, and is preferably provided mcdianly with a turn-buckle or other length-regulating deyice 22. At its opposite end, rod 2( l is pivotally connected to a pin 24, carried in and slidable along a bell crank lever 26 to vary the length of the path of travel ductor roller. Pin 24 projects through and is slidable along a slot 25 formed in the bell crank lever 26 and the lever is pivotally mounted at 27 on the machine frame.
Pin 24 is integral with, or is fixed to, a block 32 hearing against and slidable along the side of the bell cranklever 26 already referred to. Suitable friction washers 33 and 34 are provided at either side of the rod 20 on the pin 24, and a nut 35 serves to keep the parts in place.
To best edect the purposes already broadly stated, the slot 25 in the bell crank lever 26 is of arcuate form, and is preferahl in radial relation to the pivot point 21 of the rod 20 upon the arm 16. By this movement the length of the path of travel of the ductor roll may be varied; that is, it may be increased by moving the pin 24 away from the pivot point 27 or the bell-crank lever, or it may be shortened by moving the pin 24 toward the pivot point 27, of the bell crank lever. It will be clear that due to the arcuate slot 25 and its radial relation to the pivot point 21, this lengthening or shortening of the path of travel of the ductor roll 10, may be efiected without at the same time moving the ductor roll; that is, without changing its relation to either the fountain roller or ink drum ex cept as this may be affected by the lengthening or shortening of its path of travel equally at both ends.

As already stated, the relative positions of the path of travel or reciprocation of the roller relative to the fountain roller 3 or the ink drum 6 may be varied as desired. That is, the path of travel may be lengthened toward the fountain roller or toward the ink drum so as to vary the pressure or other cooperation of the ductor roller with either of these at will, without changing the pressure or cooperation with the 0th r.

(in the other hand, if the turn buckle 22 be turned to lengthen the link 20, the path of travel of the ductor roller 10 toward the fountain roller 3 would be lengthened, and it will exert greater pressure upon the fountain roller. It will be clear that by the conjoint regulation or positioning of the pin 24 and the lengthening or shortening of the link 20 by the turn-buckle 22 any exact desired cooperation of the ductor roller with both the Iountain roller 3 and the ink drum 6 may be efi'ected as desired.
Referring to the embodied form or means for positioning, and regulating the position of, t e pin 24 in the slot 25, as embodied, the slidable block 32 is internally screw-threaded to receive a screw-rod 41. Screw-rod 41 is journaled at 42 in a block 43, which is in fixed position on the outer end of the bellcrank 26. Block 43 is fixed to a pin 44, which projects through a corresponding hole in the outer end of the bell crank lever 26. This is held in place by a nut screwed thereonto. Screw-rod 41 is preferably provided with a hand-wheel 45 on one side of the block 43,.and it has a shoulder 46 on the opposite side of the block to maintain the screw-rod longitudinally in fixed position in the block 43, while permitting the rod to rotate freely.
In the embodied form of actuating means for the bell-crank lever 26, the arm 47 of the lever is provided with cam roller 48, which roller runs on a sliding, cam 49, which cam is mounted on a carrier block 50. The block 50 is slidably mounted in a pair of guide ways 51, on a bracket 52, mounted at 53 upon the machine :trame. Retaining strips 54 and 55 keep the cam and its carrier block in position in the guideways. The com 49 maaoav bell crank lever 26, thereb to the ductor roller and provides a dwell t erefor at either end of its movement.
Means are provided for varying the position of cam 49 to vary the time or place of the dwell of the ductor roller, and as embodied, the carrier block 50 is provided with a rearwardly extending lug or projection 58, which is internally threadedto re ceive the screw-threaded end 59 of the actuating rod 60, which latter is operated by any suitable part of" the printing press mechanism'. The nuts 61 and 62 are provided to hold the carrier blotk in desired position on the rod 60. A turnbuckle 64 is provided in rod 60 whereby the rod'may be either lengthened tion of the cam relatively to its actuating means.
By the variable positioning of the act-uating cam 49 relatively to its shaft 60, whichv is preferably effected by means of the turnbuckle 64, the dwell of the ductor roller on either the fountain roller or the ink drum -may be regulated as desired. This is especially useful and desirable with a fountain roller with a continuous feed or rotation. In .this way the. period during which the ductor roller is in contact with the fountain roller or the ink drum may be regulated as desired.
The invention in its broader aspects is not limited to the specific mechanisms shown and described but departures may be made therefrom within the scope of the accompanying claims without departing from the principles of the invention and without sacrificing its chief advantages.
What I claim is 1. In a printing press inking mechanism having, in combination, an ink fountain roller, an ink drum and a ductor roll oscillatable therebetween, means for oscillating said ductor roll including a lever member and avlink member ivotally associated therewith, and means or varying the path of Oscillation of said ductor roll including an arcuate guideway on one of said membersand means for variably positioning the other member in said arcuate 'guideway.

In a printing press inking mechanism having, in combination, an ink fountain roller, an ink drum and a ductor roll oscillatable therebetween, means for oscillating said ductor roll including a lever and a link pivotally associated therewith, means for varying the path of oscillation of said ductor roll including an arcuate guideway on said lever and means operable while the press is running for variably positioning the pivot of said link in said guideway.

In a printing press inking mechanism having, in combination, an ink fountain roller, an ink drum and a ductor roll oscil latable therebetween, means for oscillating or shortened to change the posisaid ductor roll including alever and a link pivotally associated therewith, a second pivot at the other end of said link, and means for varying the path of oscillation of said ductor roll including an arcuate slot formed in said lever and curved about said second pivot at a center, and means for variably positioning said link with respect to said I arcuate slot. p 4. In a printing press inking mechanism having, in combination, an ink fountain-3- roller, an ink drum and a ductor roll oscil-" Pv latable therebetween, means foroscillat-ing said ductorrollincluding a lever and a link said ductor roll including a lever and a link pivotally associated therewith, means for varying the location of the path of oscillation of said ductor roll, and means for varying the len h of said path equally at each end thereo including an arcuate uideway on said lever, and means for varia 1y positioning the pivot of said link therealong.

In a. printing press inking mechanism having,- in combination, an ink fountain roller, an ink drum and a ductor roll oscillatable therebetween, means for oscillatin said ductor roll including a lever and a lin ivotally associated therewith, and means or varying'the gfnth of oscillation of said ductor roll inclu g an arcuate guideway on said lever and means including a rotatable ivoted member for variably positioning t e pivot of said link therealong. v

In a printing press inking mechanism having, in combination, an ink fountain roller, an ink drum and a ductor roll oscil- V lat-able therebetween, means for oscillating i said ductor roll including a lever and a lin pivotally associated therewith, and means for varying the path of oscillation of said ductor roll including an arcuate 'guideway on said lever and means includinga rotatable pivotedf member operable while the press is running for variably positioning the pivot of said link therealong.

In a printing press inking mechanism having, in combination, an ink fountain roller, an ink drum and a ductor roll oscil latable therebetween, means for oscillating said ductor roll including a lever and a link pivotally associated therewith, means for varying the location of the path of oscilla-.
tion of said ductor roll, and means for varying the length of said path equally at each able said ductor roll including a lever and a end thereof including an arcuate guideway on said lever andmeans including a rotativoted member operable while the press is running for variably positioning the pivot of said link therealong.

In a printing press inking mechanism having, in combination, an ink fountain roller, an ink drum and a ductor roll oscillatable therebetween, means for oscillatin linii, pivotally associated therewith and having a second pivot at its other end, means for varying the location of the path of oscillation of said ductor roll, and means for'varyin the length of said path equally at each end t ere of including an arcuate guiding slot in said lever and v curved about said second pivot as a center, and means including a rotatable pivoted member for variably positioning said link with respect to said slot without moving said ductor roll.

In a printing press inking mechanism having, in combinatlon, an ink fountain said ductor roll including a lever and a link pivotally associated therewith, a cam for actuating said lever, means for varying the length of the path of oscillation of said meaoea ductor roll including an" arcuate guideway on said lever and means operable while the press is running for variably positioning the pivot of said link therealong, and means for varying the dwell of said ductor roll at each end of its path of oscillation including a rotatable member for moving said cam with respect'to said lever.
11. In a printing press inking mechanism having, in combination, an inkfountain roller, an ink drum and a ductor roll oscillatable therebetween, means for oscillating said ductor roll including a lever and a link pivotally associated therewith, a cam for actuating said lever, means for varying the length of the path of oscillation of said ductor roll including an arcuate guideway on said lever and means including a pivoted rotatable threaded member operable while the press is running for variably positioning the pivot of said link therealon and means for varying the dwell of said uctor roll at each end of its path of oscillation including a rotatable member for moving said cam with respect to said lever.
