Description

G. T. THOMPSON TENT SUPPORT Get. 18, 192?, 1,645,885
Filed A ril 25, 1925 Y Z F I/ 7 i "J! I 7 era 0J0): mvEm-oR WITNESS: ATTORNEY Patented Oct. 18, 1927.
UNITED STATES it GEORGE TJIHOMPSON, OF LAKE CITY, COLORADO.
This invention relates to tents, and more particularly to a supporting structure therefor, which structure is capable of being knocked down and the parts folded incompact form, and thus require but a minimum of space for storage, particularly about some part of a motor operated vehicle, so that a tent can be conveniently carried when touring.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in con nection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a tent partly broken away, showing how the tent supported by the structure above referred to,
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 22 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view throughthe transverse supporting bar which connects the posts of the supporting structure,
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4--4 of Figure 3,
Figure 5 is a perspective view of two scctions utilized in the formation of the trans verse supporting bar.
While I have hereinabove stated that the supporting structure tt'orniing the subject matter of the present invention is primarily \intended to be used in conjunction with tents, I desire to have it understood that it may be used for various other purposes, the showing of the structure in connection with the tent being merely illustrative of one 6Il1- bodiment of the invention, and that its general use is contemplated by the claim,
The structure includes a pair of spaced posts, one of which is clearly shown in Figure 1, including a plurality of telescopic sections indicated at 10, 11 and 12 respectively. Consequently each post can be lengthened or shortened as the occasion may require. The respective sections of each post can be constructed from any suitable material, pretterably' metal, the lower section 10 being equiped with a base 14', The upper end. of 1% is threaded, and in in PATENT OFFICE.
TENT SUPPORT.
Application filed April 25, 1925. Serial No. 25,876.
by invaded 0ep 15 rom the center of which rises a pin 16 for a purpose to be presently described.
The two posts are adapted to be arranged any distance apart, and connected by a; transverse supporting bar made up of a plurality of detachably connected sections 17 and 18 respectively. There are two of the sections 18 used in the formation of this transverse bar, these sections constituting the end sections, while any number of sections 17 can be used, depending of course upon the desired length of the transverse bar. Each of the various sections is of substantially U-shaped formation in cross section, the sections 17 fitting within the sections 18 as shown in Figure 3. The sections 18 are provided with transverse pins 19 to be received by the slot 20 formed in the inner adjacent section 17, each of the latter men tioned sections being provided with said slots 20 adjacent each end, whereby'the adjacent outer sections of the bar which are arranged in end to end relation are connected by the sections 17 the latter sections bridging the meeting ends of the sections 18 as shown in Figure 3. Manifestly any number of sections may be employed to produce a bar of the desired length, which bar connects the end posts above described. Each end section 18 has secured thereto a trans" verse plate 21 formed with an opening 22 arranged in alignment with an opening 23 formed in thetop of said section, these aligned openings receiving the pin 16 rising from the cap 15 as illustrated in Figure 2, This pin 16 also projects through the eyelet 24 secured to the top of the tent 25 when the latter is arranged upon the supporting structure in the manner shown in Figure 1. By reason of the construction described, it will be manifest that the component sections of the transverse bar can be quickly and conveniently associated to provide a bar of any desired length, and the said bar subsequently arranged upon the post. The tent 25 is then placed upon the supporting structure, the transverse supporting bar being arranged directly beneath the top of the tent, while the sides of the latter are held separated in tent like formation by means of ropes 26 which are adapted tobe tied to stakes 27 driven into the grounch tions that by reason of the con gernent of the structure can be knocked down or collapsed V 7 to produce a comparatively small bnndle,
which will require but a minimum of space for storage irrespective of where the :1 rticle is placed. It can be conveniently (ferried on the running board or in the tonneau of a vehicle by tourists.
While it is believed that from the foregoing description, the nature and advantages of the invention Will be readily apparent, I
desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to What is herein shown and described, and that such changes may he resorted to When desired as fell within the scope of what is claimed.
eeneee What I claim is:
ll supporting; hm. comprising; outer scctions arranged in end to end relation and of substantially U-sheped Formation in woes section, an inner section adapted to be errenged Within the outer sections and bride;- ing the meeting ends thereof, said inner section haying slots adjacent the ends thereof. and pins carried by lIllGOlltGl sections mu adapted to be received by said slots Wl1GI'l by said sections are (letechnhly connected together.
In testimony Whereot I :ilflix my signature.
