THOMAS NATHAN iwssnnn, cronicas@ ILLiNois, AssisNon, BYl MiisNii` ASSIGN- MENTS, r.ro calorico-CLEVELAND can noerINeV COMPANY, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS,
A CORPORATION OF DELAVARE.
'cARLINn Appiicatien sied March is, 1920. seriai No. 365,478.
This invention relates to carlines more particularly designed for use in freighticar roof frames, and has for an object the provision of a simply constructed, though strongly braced carline that is reinforced at the points of attachment to the side frame members or side plates, with the result of making the carline, as a whole, Stronger for the resistance of all vertical, horizontal and torsional strains, and of preventinga hinge act-ion at the points where the carline is secured to the side frame members or plates.
The invention has for further objects a general stifening and yreinforcing of the root trame, and such other improvementsl or advantages in construction and operation as are found to obtain in the structures and de-` vices hereinafter described or claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and showing, for purposes of exemplilication a preferred form and manner in which the inventionA may be en embodied and practiced, but without limiting the claimed invention specifically to such illustrative instance or instances:
a portion of a car roof frame provided with a carline embodying the invention, and showing said frame and the sheathing in section and the carline partly in section and partly in elevation;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of an end portion of the carline;
Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section of the carline taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 5 is another vertical transverse section of the carline taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
The same characters of reference indicate the same parts throughout the Vseveral views.
Referring to the drawings, there is indicated at 11 the side plates of the roof frame, suitably secured as shown at 12 to side poles 18, there being a plurality of such poles disposed at intervals alongeach side of the car.
Mounted on the upper end of the rows of side poles 13 are longitudinally extending Z-bars 14, the vertical webs 15 of which are suitably secured as shown at 16to the side plates 11. The top horizontal flanges 17 of the aforesaid Z-bars 14 respectively extend laterally inwardly from the inside :faces of Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section of.
cent the apex 23 of the carline to,V the endsl 24, as shown in Fig. 1. The horizontal side flanges 25 of the carline may taper inwe-.rdlj;7 toward the longitudinal center of the carline, as shown at 26. `Toward the side plates 11 ofk the car roof frame, the side carline flanges 25, which extend oppositely from the central reinforcing rib 2,2), are bent upwardly as shown at 27 to form vertical stiffening ,flanges 28 situated at the oppositek ds ofy the carlinfe, and these stifening flanges 28'may taper downwardly from the opposite ends of the carl'ine teward its longitudinal center and into the side flanges 25, as indicated at 29 in Fig'. l. The centrai rib 22, which is relatively lower at the ends y of the carline than at its apex, is thus reinforced at the opposite carline ends yby means of vertical flanges that exten-d parallel with said central rib along its opposite sides. y
Further kreinforcing of the opposite ends of the carline is effected by bending the horizontal flanges 25 and the central rib 22 downwardly, as shown at 30, so that these flanges 25 and rib 22 overlap, as shown at 32 the vertical web 15 of the Z-bar 14.V The opposite ends of the carline are suitably secured to the trame by bolts or rivets'l passed through thejcarline flanges 25 and the top horizontal flanges 17 of the Z-bars 14.r By bending the opposite ends of the and stresses are brought to bear on the side members and carline ends at the pointsy of attachment, especially when the car is tilted while turning curves, such stresses tending to effect a relative movement of the carlines and side members and to rip the fastenings apart or bend the parts out of their true relative positions.
The invention as hereinabove set forth is embodied in a particular form of construction but may be variously embodied within the scope of the claims hereinafter made.
claim:
l. In a car roof, in combination: a roof frame including side Z-bars secured to the side members of said frame and having their top horizontal flanges extended inwardly beyond-the inner faces of said side members; a carline extended between said Z-ba-rs and constituted of a single steel bar formed with a central upstanding reinforcing rib that extends from end to end of the carline and tapers downwardly from the apex thereof to itsropposite end, and with side horizontal flanges extending along the opposite sides of said reinforcing rib, the aforesaid rib and side flanges being bent downwardly at vthe opposite ends of the carline over against the outer faces of the vertical webs of the aforesaidv Z-bars; and means for securing the horizontal fianges of said carline to the top horizontal flanges of Vsaid Z-bars, substantially as specified.
Q. A carline comprising a rigidifying rib of constant width having sides decreasing in depth from the ridge portion toward each end7 said sides terminating in lateral flanges increasing in width as the sides decrease in depth, said lateral ianges being bent transversely from a point back of the eaves towards the eaves.
3. A carline comprising a central rigidifying rib of constant width from end to end and having sides decreasing in depth toward the eaves from a point at each side of the ridge, said carline being of constant width from a point short of the eaves toward the eaves, said sides having lateral fianges, a portion of the flanges increasing in width toward the caves and a portion of the material of said lateral flanges being struck upwardly from said point short of the eaves out to the eaves end-s of said carline.
il. A carline comprising a rigidifying rib 0f constant width having sides terminating in laterall flanges in a common plane, said sides decreasing in height from the ridge toward the eaves and said lateral flanges increasing in width toward the eaves, a portion of said lateral flanges at each eaves end being flanged upwardly.
5. A carline comprising a rigidifying rib having sides decreasing in depth toward the eaves from a point adjacent the ridge, said .sides having flanges, portions of the flanges being bent upwardly, said portions decreasing in depth toward the ridge from a point adjacent the eaves end of the carline. `THOMAS NATHAN RUSSELL.
