STITGHED BUFFING SECTION.
Application filed November 29, 1926. Serial'No. 151,487.
This invention relates to polishing or buffing disk sections or wheels.
This invention has utility when ncorporated in multi-ply fabric disk sections as stitch-assembled.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. l, is a fragmentary side elevation of a jack carrying a buffing wheel;
Fig. 2 is a side view, with parts broken away, of plies as primarily assembled by diametrical stitching;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view of a stitched completed butting disk or wheel section ready for assembly with other sections to complete a bufiing wheel; and
Fig. 4 is a view of a bufiing disk sect on with parts broken away showin such -as built up from bias strips instea of from complete flat disks or pieced fiat disks of fabric.
Drive belt 1 is shown as actuating pulley 2 fast on shaft 3, mounted in bearings. 4 carried by base 5. This shaft 3 of the buffing jack has threaded terminals 6, and adjacent the bearings 4, flanges 7.
A plurality of assembled multi-ply sections 8 may be placed upon the shaft 3 over the threaded end ;6 and flange Q-placed in opposing relation to flange 7 and the plurality of sections assembled in a complete buffing wheel 10 by the operation of nut 11 in coaction with the threaded terminals-'61 of the shaft 3.
Flat portions of fabric, as canvas duck in the form of disks 12, 13 or pieced forms 14, 15, may be placed in superposed assembly with intersecting diametric stitchings 16, 17. 18, 19. The trimming of the disks or plies to circular form may occur after this stitch assembly or even after the supplemental stitching. In the placing of these plies in overlapping relation, it is desire able to have the warp and woof of said disks staggered as to their directions in the successive plies.
In the completion of the buffing section hereunder, stitching 20 extends inward parallel to the diagonal 18 to the diagonal 16 and then outward parallel to the diagonal 19.
Nesting with this V-stitching 20 are .V-stitchings 21, 22' with such spacing as may be desired. In carrying out this invention; it'is desirable-temperate on alternate stitching diameters in that the diametrical stitchingsserve as direction guides for the sides of the V and location of the ,ings may be of other than 90.

These nesting V-stitchings provide pockets 24,25, 26, 27, of graduating depths, herein shown as from the periphery to a diameter. The several stitchings terminate peripherally of the. section at such a degree of de parture from ta-ngency as to the periphery that there are open pockets with avoidance of intermediate hardness.
In the showing of Fig. 4, there is disclosure of the strips of tape or fabric, which, as wound in a helix and flat, rovide bias -terminals at all times. Such str1ps laid parallel as to a common layer or ply may have the adjacent ply at an angle thereto, and such several bias strip plies may be embraced between outer plain plies and then assembled by the radial or diametrical stitching with the intermediate V-shaped stitching. These are features contributing to uniformity in buffing section wear in operation The stitchings have a maximum of effectiveness for uniformity of peripheral resistance.
This is a result obtained, with a minimum of stitching extent lineal-ly with very material economy in thread and labor, notwithstanding there is resultantly produced a very superior buffing section.
What is claimed and desired to secure by Letters Patent is: I l. A bufling wheel section comprising a plurality of plies of fabric concentric disks, radial assembly stitching uniformly spaced, and supplemental V-shaped stitching pro,- viding aplurality of parallel peripherally open .pockets, the legs of each V-stitching being parallel to alternate radial stitchings and the apex of each V-stitching being located on a radial stitching intermediate said alternate stitchings.
2. A bufling wheel section comprising a plurality of plies of fabric concentric disks, diametrical assembly stitching uniformly spaced, and supplemental V-shaped stitchings, having the apices thereof toward the center of said disks as two oppositely directed series of V-stitchings upon a COIIHIIOII diameter diametrical stitching with thelegs of said V-stitchings parallel to different diameter diametrical stitching.
