JOHN W. YEWELL, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR HOLDING AND DISPLAYING BROOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,358, dated June 8, 1875; application filed May 3, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN W. YEWELL, of Washington, in the county of Washington and in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broom-Holders; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawingmaking a part of this specitication, in which is shown in front elevation my improved device as arranged for use.
In the display of whisk -brooms, feather dusters, and other like articles of merchandise within a store it has heretofore been customary for the dealer to pass a string or wire through the loops at the ends of their handles, connect the ends of said string or wire together, and then suspend the whole from some convenient nail upon the wall or ceiling. When thus arranged, the articles named are so bunched together as to render a proper display of each impracticable, while to remove one of the same from the bunch usually requires the separation of the entire lot, and causes much unnecessary waste of time.
To remedy these objections is the design of my invention, which consists, as a new article of manufacture, in the hereinafter-described holder, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawing, A represents generally my holder, which is formed of wire a, has the general form of a triangle, and has each end of said wire bent backward, so as to form a hook, to, that engages with a similar hook, a, upon the opposite end of the same, such point of union being preferably arranged near one corner of said holder, and a sufficient outward spring is given to said wire to cause said hooks to remain in engagement unless purposely disengaged.
As thus constructed, if the holder A is suspended from one of its corners, its lower side will-be horizontal, and upon the latter may be strung the loops 1) b, 850., of a number of whisk-brooms, B and B, or other like articles of merchandise, said articles being thus suspended in a line, instead, as is usually the case, of being bunched together in an irregular manner.
If desired, the horizontal bar a may be corrugated, as shown by dot-ted lines, and each loop I) caused to occupy a separate depression, a, in which event said loops will maintain their relative positions while the holderis bein g suspended from or removed from a nail.
By providing a round eye, A, at the upper corner of the holder, and forming the same of two or more coils of wire, it will be found more convenient to handle and suspend the same, and a greater amount of outward spring of said wire may be had.
Having thus fully set forththe nature and merits of my invention, what I claim is- As a new article of manufacture, the hereinbefore-described holder, constructed of wire in the general form of a triangle, the ends of said wire meeting at one side, and provided with suitable engaging-hooks, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 30th day of April, 1875.
JOHN W. YEVVELL.
