UNITED STATES BENJAHIN BROWN STEIN, OI ELLWOOD CITY, PENNSYLVANIA.
. l PIPE-THREAD PROTECTOR Application tiled June 8, 1926.` Serial No. 114,460.
This invention relates to thread protectors for pipes, t-heseprotectors being used to prevent the threads of pipes from being damaged in handlin or shipping.
One of the o jects of the present invention is to provide a thread protector which is particularly adapted for small pi and in which the protector is seamless, w ich will not be expensive as it may be made from thin material and which thus may be thrown,-
awa-y when the pipe is used and a further object is to provide a protector of this character which may be made in a punch prcss'to eliminate the expensive operation of threading .the different numbers and taper of threads for any given size. v
Anotherobject is to provide construe-fy .Sh ed i vto' :placedy over-a'nd enclose the end ofa tion of this character formedof relatively thin sheet metal cup-shaped in general form'y to extend over the" end of the pipeand en gage the `threads thereof and so form the central portion'of the rotector as to provide for the engagement erewith of a wrench bar whereby the protector may be appliedor removed. y v
My invention is illustrated infthe accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a top plan view of a thread rotector constructedin accordance with my 80 mvention;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through a pipe with my thread protector applied thereto; l j
Fig. 3 "is'an e1evation of the structure showninFigure 2. A Referring to these drawin \it will be seen that 10 designates a cupaped bodyy of relatively thin metal so formed as toprovide the inwardly turned portion'll at its up r 40 end and an outwardly bulgedportion 12, s bulged portion being longitudinally slotted as at 13 whereby to receive a wrenchbar or like implement shown in dotted lines in Figures 2 and 3' and desigated 14 whereby the screwed ontoor oilY from ap1ie. W
The bo y 10 inward of the flange 11 is formed with a U-shaped slot 15 and the. tongue 16 definedl y this slot is nwardlf benty at -a slight angle so'as to engage ing a margins threads of a pipe A. These lu or tongues 16 are slight y resilient and w en the protector is screwed upon the pipe these tongues prevent any detachment fof theprotector except byunscrewing the same. Any number of thread engaging tongues may be used depending on the sizeof thepipe. I do not wishto -be to the exact form of the embossed or protuberant portion 12 as this ma have other sha than that illustrated.
