This invention relates in general to improvements in the art of manufacturing machine elements which are subject to destructive shrinkage strains, and relates more specifically to improvements in crusher structures and to an improved method of constructing certain elements of such structures. V 7
An object of the invention is to provide 10 a crusher which is simple in construction and efficient in operation. Another object of the invention is to provide an improved method of constructing crusher structures.
In the manufacture of certain types of machines such as gyratory crushers, it is clesirable to'provide a one-piece element comprising an outer shell and a bearing located centrally therein, the shell and hearing being formed of a single casting and being rigidly connected by means of one or more radial ribs. The connecting ribs of such ele ments of some gyratory crushers, have here- :tofore been cast solid and integral with both the shell and the bearing. Due to shrinkage stresses in the ribs produced during casting of the structure, these ribs would frequently break thus necessitating repairing of the ribs in order-to permit them to function as struts for the purpose of maintaining the bearing in proper position during normal operation of the crusher. In an endeavor to avoid such breakage of the ribs due to shrinkage stresses, it was proposed to cast the ribs solid and to subsequently cut and drill through the ribs, thereby dividing them into sections and relieving them of stresses which might tend to cause breakage.
After the ribs were thus divided and the stresses eliminated, it was proposed to insert filler pieces at the divisions in order to reconvert the ribs into struts for preventing displacement of the center bearing. Such proposed structure forms the subject of U. S. Letters Patent No. 1,607,649, granted November 23, 1926, and while it eliminated breakage of the connecting ribs, the proposed method of eliminating the stresses in the ribs was faulty in that unequal stresses in the ribs would cause the bearing to shift out of desired position when the cutting and drilling of the ribs was effected.
The present invention contemplates provision of such a crusher structure and of a method of producing the same, whereby undesirable shrinkage stresses are positively avoided during formation of the casting, thus eliminating possible displacement of the bearing relatively to the shell "at all times. in accordance with-the improvement, the ribs are cast in sections separated by a core during the casting operation. .Vhile the invention is disclosed herein as being specificallyv applied to a gyratory crusher structure, it will be obvious that the principles are capable of more general application. The gyratory crusher specifically illustrated comprises in general a lower support consisting of an outer shell member 1 1 and an inner bearing member 15.mounted.

The lower supporting element consisting of the outer shell member 14 and the bearing member 15is provided with a diaphragm 13 extending at an incline from the top to the bottom of the supporting element and connecting the members 14, 15. In addition to'the dia )hragm 13, the members 14, 15 are prefera ly connected by a series of ribs 10,11, 12 extending substantially radially with respect to the bearing member 15 and comprising sections 22, 23 formed integral with the members 14, 15 respectively. It will be noted that the diaphragm 13 is also formed integral with the members 14, 15 and that the entire supporting element comprising the shell member 14, bearing member 15, diaphragm 13, and ribs 10, 11, 12 is cast en bloc.
During the formation of the lower crusher element by casting, the spaces 21 between the rib sections 22, 23 are provided with cores 7 which positively separate the ribs 10, 11, 12
* be provided with liner into sections 22, free to expand and contract during cooling of the casting and thus eliminating shrinkage strains between the bearing member 15 and the shell member 14 through the ribs. After the rough casting has been formed, the surfaces bounding the spaces 21 are finished to permit insertion of the pins 2, 3. The pins 2 which are utilized to complete the upper ribslO, 11 are preferably tapered downwardly as shown and are heldin firm engagement with the rib sections 22, 23 by means of nuts l coactingwith the lower ex tremities thereof. The pin 3 which is utilized to complete the lower rib 12 may be either straight or tapered upwardly as 7 shown. Due to the fact that the ribs 10, 11
are located in the direct path of material passing through the crusher, these ribs may plates 5 'coacting with lugs 6 as shown.
It has been found that by casting the ribs 10,11, 12 in sections, elimination of all undesirable shrinkage stresses is positively eliminated and the bearing member 15 may readily be maintained in proper position 23, these rib sections being within the shell member 14 at all times. lVhilc only three ribs have been illustrated. in the drawing, it will be obvious that any nber of these ribs may be utilized. and the spaces 21 may be formed either at or intermediate the ends of the ribs 10, ll, 12. it is moreover not necessary to utilize tapered circular pins as shown, for the pur pose of subsequently uniting the rib sections, and it is obvious that any other connccting means may be employed. .The filler pieces or pins 2, 3 serve to convert the ribs into struts which permit transmission therethrough of lateral thrust induced during crushing upon the lower end of the main shaft- 7.

It is claimed and desired to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The method of constructing a crusher frame consisting of .an outer shell member and a bearing member located therein, which integral disconnected. rib sections extending toward each other, andsubsequently uniting said rib sections to form a strut.
3. The method of constructing a crusher .95 and a bearing member located therein, which frame consisting of an outer shell member comprises, casting said members en bloc with integral disconnected ribsections extending from the one toward the other at spacedportions of said members, and subsequently completing the connection between said members through said sections.
