It isone object of my invention to provide a new and improved trap in which this undesirable characteristic does not exist, the conf ed against accidental movement by a portion of the base.
Traps of thetype above set forth, commonly employ Va pivoted arm to extend over the spring-actuated jawV for the purpose of holding this jaw in set position, and it is a further object of the invention to provide a new and improved construction and arrangement of parts for holding said arm in its operative position, all features being of such formation as to permit rapid, inexpensive and easy manufacture.
With the foregoing in View, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, the description being supplemented by the accompanying drawing.

.the preferred form of construction has been illustrated, and while this construction will be hereinafter specifically deiined, it is to be understood at the outset, that within the scope of the invention as claimed, variations may be made. f
The numeral 5 designatesa base preferably formed from wood. Pivotally mounted upon this base, is a movable aw 6 having an actuating spring 7. An arm 8 is pivoted at 9 to the base to extend over the jaw 6 and hold the latter in theV set position shown in Fig. 1, and novel provision is made for holding this arm in its trap-set position.
10 designates a vertically disposed sheet metal plate laterally bent at its lower end to provide an attaching foot 11 which may be secured by a screw or other fastener 12, upon the base 5. Preferably, the corners of this foot are bent downwardly to form prongs 13 which penetrate the base and hold the foot and the plate 10 against turning about the fastener 12. At its lower end, the plate 10 has integral tongues 1/1 which are bent laterally in the opposite direction from the foot 11 and are then curved upwardly to provide a pair of horizontally alined bearings lei.
A latch plate 15 contact-s with one flat side of the plate 10 and is pivoted to the latter at 16, said latch plate having a nose 17 to overlie the free end of the arm S to retain the latter in its trap-set position. Below this nose, the latch plate 15 is provided with an extended pointed end 18 which projects beyond one edge of the plate 10. This edge is denoted at 19 and it preferably has its upper portionl inwardly offset from its lower portion as shown most clearly in Fig. 3.- The arm 8 occupies a position at the upper portion of this edge 19, when the trap is set, and the nose 17 projects beyond said edge portion to engage said arm, as shown.
A roclc shaft 2O is mounted in the bearings 14 and at one end is provided with an upstanding arm 21 .having a hook 22 at its upper end to engage the pointed end 18 of the llatch plate 15, so as to hold the latter in operative position. The other end of the shaft 2O 1s provided with a bait-carrying arm or trigger 23 having a bait-receiving hook 24 supported and hence they have no tendency to move by gravity. In order for a rat or the like t-o release the trap, he must lift the bait and in so doing, the arm 23 turns the rock shaft 20 and the latter moves the arm 21 to release'its hook 22 from t-he end 18 of the latch plate 15. As soon as this hook is released, the upward pressure of the jaw 6 against the arm 8, swings the latter upwardly, the plate 15 being then free to permit such swinging.
