UNITEDSTATES 1,641,022 PATENT, OFFICE.
CHARLES S. CALHOUN, OF VIDALIA, GEORGIA, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF T0 BEN S.
CALHOUN, OF: GLENWOOD,- GEORGIA;
SPARK ARRESTER.
Application filed December 27, 1926, SerialjNo. 157,277.
This invention relates to; spark arresters and one if its objects is to provide a spark arrester in the nature of a damper and regulator for tire places and the like, that can be installed in any style fire place in an expeditious manner and can be used with or without grates without fear of smoking, whichis generally the result when a grate is not used.
A further object of the invention is to provide a spark arrester adapted for fire place use, that will retard the escape of heat up the chimney with the result maximum heat will be expelled into the room having the fire place.
Another object of the invention is to provide a spark arrester for fire places, that is capable of performing the function of a damper and vetilator, and can be adjusted to any desired position,-and when the fire place is not in use, the spark arrester can be used as a ventilator by leaving the same open or it can be closed to prevent the ingress of insects.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts througout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is afront elevation of a fire place showing my spark arrester in applied position. I
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken through the fire place and my novel spark arrester respectively.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of my novel spark arrester per se.
Figure 4.- is a sectional view taken on line 44t of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawings in detail, it will be noted that I have shown my novel spark arrester installed in a brick fire place formed with the ususal arched backing A terminating at its lower end in a shoulder or platform B, and at its upper end in the rear wall of a passage C leading to the chimney D;
The spark arrester is adapted to lie across and control the passage 0 with its lower end supported upon the platform B and its upperend engaging the front wall of the passage C as best shown in Figure 2 of the drawings.
The spark arrester includes an elongated curved body plate 1 which as shown in Figure 2 is positioned to follow the curvature of the backing A, and the body 1 is provided with a plurality of spaced parallel slots 2 transversely arranged therein to provide passages as will be readily apparent. Extending from the ends of the body 1 are projections 3 which are adapted to be positioned in the side walls of the fire place and thereby cooperate with the platform operate with the slots 2 to register therewith when the spark arrester is in open position, and the portions of the plate 4 between the slots 5 are adapted to close the slots 2 as will be readily apparent. The body 1 is provided with a longitudinally arranged slot 6 centrally formed therein and this slot is adapted to receive a headed pin 7 which is secured to the plate 4 for moving the latter as above set forth and whereby passages formed by the slots 2 can be controlled by the will of the operator.
From the above description and disclosure in the drawings, it will be obvious that I have provided a spark arrester in the nature of a damper and ventilator for use in fireplaces and which is not only useful for controlling the draft to the fire place when the latter is in use but also is useful to ventilate a room when the fire place is not in use, and again, the spark arrester can be disposed to closed position to prevent the ingress of insects and the like as well as to prevent residue that accumulates in the Win11 I claim is:
