COMBINATION TABLE AND TRAY.

This invention relates broadly to hospital furniture and is particularly directed to an improved combination table and tray, wherein the tray is adjustably and foldably connected with the table to occupy an extended position when in active use and a collapsed position when not in use. I 7

With these and other objects in view, as will appear as the description proceeds, the

invention consists in the novel features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangements of parts hereinafter tobe fully described ad pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawing the numeral 1 designates in its entirety the table and the numeral 2 the adjustable tray or shelf structure associated therewith. Mounted upon one of the side walls 3 of the table is a pair of brackets l in which is mounted for vertical adjustment a main supporting rod 5, the latter being held in its several positions of vertical adjustment by means of a wing screw 6, carried by a collar 7 surrounding the rod 5. By loosening the screw 6 the rod 5 will be released allowing the same to be manually adjusted to assume different vertical positions. Ordinarily, the collar 7 rests upon the upper surface of one of the brackets l.

The upper end of the rod 5 is bifurcated as at 8 to pivotally receive an ear 9 formed upon a frame 10. This frame includes a rectangular opening 11 in which is slidably positioned the metallic tray or shelf 2. The upper end of the tray is provided with a bracket 12 which engages with one of the side walls 13 of the frame so as to limit the downward or dropping movement of the tray. By this construction the tray is supported, when collapsed, within the frame so as to lie parallel with the side wall 3 of the table.

WVhen it is desired to extend the tray so as to cause the latter to occupy an active position, the said tray is lifted vertically by manually grasping the handle 14: until the lower end of the tray is brought into registration with the frame 10. By reference to Figure n will be observed that the side wall 13 of the fran'ie 1O occupies a position in a lower plane than the opposite side wall of said frame and this enables the tray, when in ahorizontal position, to rest upon the upper surface of the wall 13 and secure a rigid support thereon. Moreover,- the tray is provided at its lower end with an angular clip 15, and the arrangement of this member is such that while the tray or shelf occupies its horizontal position, the said clip will engage.

In addition to the swinging of the tray about a verticalaxis, provided by the rod 5, a structure is provided to permit of the adjustment or turning of the tray around a substantially horizontal axis. To obtain this the rod 5 has pivotally connected therewith as at 16 an arcuate link 17 and, similarly, the frame 10 has connected therewith a complemental arcuate link 18. The link 17 is provided with a slot 19 in which is received the shank of a binding device 20. It will be manifest that when the tray is in its horizontal position, the loosening of the device 20 will permit of the rotation of the frame 10 and the associated tray 2 around the pivotal connection existing between the parts 8 and 9, so that the tray, in efiect, is rotatable about a horizontal axis.

The lower end of the rod 5 is provided with a guide 21, which engages with the lower end of the tray when the latter is inactively positioned. Thcguide 21 serves to maintain the tray securely in position and prevent swinging movement thereof about its supporting bracket 12.

In view of the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it will be seen that the present invention provides an article of furniture which may be usefully employed in hospitals, sick rooms and. the like for the purpose of facilitating the support and positioning of different articles in a position of natural convenience to a person confined to a bed or chair. The construction has the advantage of utilizing but a minimum of space when not in active use, and when in active use is capable of being conveniently adjusted to suit the conditions which it is re quired to meet.

.Vfhat is claimed is:

1. An adjustable tray side tables comprising a' connection with a support fo turning movement about a vertical axis, a substantially rectangular frame pivoted to the upper end of said shaft for turning movement about a horizontal axis, connecting means for maintaining said frame in its various positions of adjustment relative to said shaft, a tray member slidably received by said rectangular frame, a bracket fixed to one end of said tray and arranged to with said frame so as to maintain the tray when inactively positioned in vertical suspended relationship with respect to said frame, and a second bracket secured to the opposite structure for bed sl raft mounted in end ,of said tray and engaging with the walls of said frame to maintain said tray when actively positioned in a horizontal plane and in projecting relationship with respect to said frame. 1

A tray attachment for bed side tables comprising a substantially rectangular frame, a compound pivotal mounting between one end of said frame and an associated support permitting of the adjustment of said frame about both horizontal and vertical ares, '5 frame being formed to include longitudinally extending transversely spaced walls, one of said walls being in a plane lower than the other of said walls, and an adjustable tray member slidably received by said frame, one end of said tray member being provided with a bracket arranged to engage with the lower of said walls as to support saiditray member, when the latter is inactively positioned, in vertically suspended relation from said frame,
