THREAD-WAXING DEVICE FOR SEWING MACHINES.

and has special reference to the thread waxing device.

An object of the invention is to provide an iinpioved thread waxing device for ap-V plying wax to a thread passing to the stitching mechanism o'f the sewing machine from a roll or spool of thread.

The subject-matter of the present invention is divided from my prior application Serial No. 471,814, tiled May 21, 1921, patented January 2, 1923, No. 1,440,556, and an additional object of the invention is to provide equipment for the sewing` machine oi? my said prior application 'for waxing the thread passing to the stitching mechanism thereof.

The sewing machine in connection with which the invention is shown comprises a housing 1 having a bracket 2 attached thereto for supporting a spool or roll of thread 3. The strand of thread 4 from the Spool passes through a hole or eye in a lateral extension 5 of the bracket 2 and thence through an eye 6 supported by the front head housing of the sewing machine. The thread 4 is for theformation of a lower loop in the stitching, and the wax applying device is located between the eye 6 and the stitching mechanism.

The wax applying device comprises a wax pot T that is slidably mounted on a rod 8 extending downwardly from the bottom or' the tront head frame. A set screw 9 is provided for supporting the wax pot in different adjusted positions on the rod 8. A cover 10 for the wax pot is likewise mounted for adjustment on the rod 8 above the top of the wax pot, the cover being held in different adjusted positions by a set screw 11 arranged for clamping engagement with the rod 8.

An arm 12 extends downwardly from the inner side of the cover 10 and has a slot 13 in its lower end through which the thread 4 passes. The cover 1() has an opening 14 in its rear edge, through which the thread 4 passes to the slotted eye 18k at the lower end of the arm 12. From the slot 18 atl thelower end 0i' the arm 12 the thread 4 passes upwardly through an opening 15 near the front of the wax pot cover 10 and thence through an eye 16 and a hole 17 to the stitching mechanism. i

A scraper device in the form ofV a flat spring 18 is attached to a web 19 extending from the arm 12. The thread 4 moves `be tween the spring 18 and the web 119 so that excess quantities of the wax carried up by the thread from the bottom of 'the wax pot are scraped off, it being understood that a supply of wax in semi-liquid formis maintained in the wax pot to about the depth shown.

The spring 18 is held in place by a screw` 2O which may be adjusted to vary the pressure or' t-he spring against the thread in order to cause the spring to function properly in scraping oli' excess quantities of wax.

F rom the foregoing it will be seenthat my invention is a simple and eliicient one for obtaining all oli' its intended objects and purposes. The device may be readily applied to and removed from the sewing machine and conveniently set in different adjustments. may be varied in equivalent particulars without departure from the nature and principle thereof, and do not restrict mysel'l unessentially, but what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent isz- 1. In a sewing machine, a wax receptacle, a. cover for the receptacle, an arm in connection with said cover extending` down` wardly into the receptacle, a web rigid with the cover within the receptacle, and a spring within the receptacle for engaging and pressing the thread against said web to remove excess quantities of wax from the thread passing through the receptacle.

In a. sewing machine, ahousing, a support extending from the housing, a. wax receptacle, means for holding the wax receptacle in different adjusted positions on said support, a cover Jfor the receptacle, means for holding the cover in different adjusted positions relative to the receptacle, means supported by the cover for guiding one of the threads downwardly through the receptacle, and a scraper device supported I am aware that the invention j by the cover Within the receptacle between said guiding means and the point at Which the thread leaves the receptacle for scrap-y ing excessV quantities of Wax from the thread passing through the receptacle.

In a sewing 1nachine, guides for a thread passing tothe machine, a Wax receptacle, a cover for said receptacle having an opening through which the thread may pass into the receptacle and another opening through which the thread may pass out of the receptacle, means supported by the cover for guiding the threadthrough the' receptacle, and a scraper device supported byy the cover yin the receptacle between said guiding means and the openingV through which the thread'passes fro-1n the receptacle for vsc-rap'i--ng excess quantities of Wax from the thread. 1 i

4. Ina. sewing machine, a Wax receptacle,

a cover forV the Wa-X receptacle, one of said parts being providedwith an inlet opening' for the thread and one of said parts being provided With an outlet opening for the i thread, a guide in rigid connection' with one .of Said parts" for guiding the thread toward the bottom of the receptacle, a Web in rigid connection with one of said parts between said guide and the outlet opening `for the thread, and a spring attached vto said web for scraping Wax from rthe thread passing between said Web and said` spring.

5. In a sewing machine, a Wax receptacle, a removable cover for said receptacle, means for supporting said receptacley and said cover independently of each other, av projection on the cover extending toward the bottom of the receptacle and having a notch in its` lower i end for thread passing through, the
