Description

H. GOLDSMITH ATHLETIC PROTECTIVE GARMENT Filed March. 27', 1922 Patented May 26, 1925.
UNITED STATES 1,s39,5ss PATENT OFFICE.
HUGO GOLDSMITH, or CINCINNATI, OHIO, AssIeNon, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, ,To THE P. GOLDSMITH soNs COMPANY, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
ATHLETIC PROTECTIVE GARMENT.
Application filed March 27, 1922. Serial No. 547,136.
.To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, HUGO GOLDSMITH, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have in-.
vented a new and useful Improvement in an Athletic Protective Garment, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to protective garments of the type generally employed by participants in such games as football, socker, etc.
I have shown my invention as appliedv to a head guard or helmet although it is readily apparent that same may be readily applied to other protectors employed on other parts of the body.
An object of my invention is to provide a device of the type referred to, which will afford a maximum of protection to the wearer.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device of this kind, vwhich will serve to minimize the shock of impact.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device of the type referred to which is simple in construction and which maybe readily assembled.
These and other objects are obtained by means described herein and disclosed in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a helmet embodying" my invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of a device such as that shown in Fig. 1.
The helmet 3 comprises a leather outer casing or covering 4, which is preferably of a tough and stiff nature. Any other material may be employed for this covering, although leather is preferable. Gross straps 5 and 6 in the nature of leather bands, extend over the outer face of the casing 4 and may be secured thereupon in any suitable manner such as by rows of stitching 7 A lining pad 8 preferably of felt is secured upon the inside of the leather casing by any suitable manner such as by being sewed thereto by rows of stitching 16. The pad 8 and the leather casing have a series of registering perforations 9 whereby ventilation of the interior of the garment is obtained. Av rubber ring 10 preferably of a resilient sponge rubber is secured upon the inner surface of the pad 8, by any suitable means such as by bands 11 of tape or other suitable material, extending about the ring and thruperforation 12 in the pad 8, perforat-ions 12 being in the nature of the ventilation perforations heretofore referred to. The tape band preferably does not extend thru any perforations in the leather casing. The rubber band is preferably made of such size and shape that it will readily accommodate itself to the head of the wearer, and is therefore made somewhat elongated. Any other suitable means to secure the ring upon the garment may be employed. Helmets of the type disclosed are generally provided with car laps 13 and 14, the lower ends of which are connected by an elastic band 15 whereby the device may be retained on the head of the wearer. When any force of impact is directed upon a helmet, or other garment-s made in conformity with the invention herein disclosed, the casing 4, the pad 8, and the sponge rubber ring 10, cooperate in meeting said force. The ring 10 being of a sponge rubber, precludes any sharp and decided impact from being immediately transmitted to the head of the or cutting edges which might ordinarily 1 come in contact therewith, and also protects the player. The pad is somewhat resilient and serves as a buffer having a soft finlsh which will not injure or scratch the wearer.
What I claim is:
1. A protective athletic helmet, comprising a leather casing for fitting over the wearers head, and provided with means for detachably securing the same on the head, a felt lining contacting with the inter or of the casing, and a resilient rubber ring of smaller diameter than the wearers head, and located upon the inside of the lining at the top of the helmet, and for contacting with the top of the wearers head. and for yieldingly spacing the lining from the wearers head whereby to normally prov de a ventilating air space between the lining and the wearers head and through which space the wearers head may move for contactin' the lining when a blow is directed upon t e helmet.
2. In a foot ball helmet the combination with a leether casing for fitting over a wearers head, and provided with a crown portion and with means for detachably securing it upon the head, a. resilient rubber ring of smaller diameter than the wearers head and carried within and at the crown of the helmet for engagement with the top.
of a wearers head and for yieldingly specing the casing therefrom whereby to normally provide a ventilating 'air space between the lining and the wearers head and through which space the wearers head may move for contacting the lining when a blow is directed upon the helmet.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto sul2 scribed my name this 25th dayof March, 19 2.
HUGO GOLDSMITH.
