UNITED STATES EDUARD BERN EBURG, 0F LEIPZIG, GERMANY.
LETTER FILE.
Application filed August 15, 1923.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDUARD BERNEBURG, a citizen of the German Republic, and residing at Leipzig, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Letter File, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in letter files, of that known kind comprising an upper and a lower cover of .one piece and having a common back at which they are pressed together by means of a torsional spring to clamp the letters filed therein, said spring having for this purpose a plurality of tongues engaging the adjacent portions of said covers from the outside. The improvements consist: (a) in the provision of small holes in said back through which binding wire is passed and twined with the torsional spring so as to fix the lat ter in position on said back, (b) in making said tongues loop-shaped so as to prevent damage of the covers by the same.
In the accompanying drawing: Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a letter file, while Figs. 2 and 3 are on a larger scale a crosssection through, and a fragmentary plan view of, the back of the letter file embodying the improvements.
The letter file comprises the two covers a, 6 preferably consisting of one piece of paste board or the like folded three times at its middle at 00, z, to form a common back 0 thereon which is somewhat bent inwards. The upper cover a. has near the back 0 a folding cl facilitating the opening of same, the part 6 between said folding and said cover under the action of spring 7" (see below) serving to clamp thereunder the letters 0 to be filed. The covers are pressed together at the back 0 by means of a torsional spring f having tongues g which engage the upper and the lower cover for the Serial No. 657,527.
purpose intended and which are loop-shaped and integral with the spring wires h of the torsional spring f, the tension of said torsional spring being so determined that when the cover a is opened upon its folding cl its rear part 6 can be somewhat lifted from the lower cover 6 against the spring action 6 so as to allow an insertion of the letters to be filed between both said covers :all this being already known in the art.
According to the present invention, small holes 2' are provided at the foldings an, .2 in the back 0 of the letter file, binding wire 7c being passed from inside through each two adjacent holes i and twined with the spring wires h of the torsional spring f so as to fix the latter in position on said back 0.
A strip m of any appropriate material stuck on the back 0 and over the adjacent portions of the coversa, 6 serves to cover the torsional spring with its engaging tongues so as to conceal the same from View.
What I claim, is
A letter file comprising, the combination with an upper and a'lower cover of one piece and having a common back, and a torsional spring on said back having integral loopshaped tongues engaging over the parts of said covers adjacent to said back, of means to fix said torsional spring in position on said back, and consisting of small holes in said back and binding wire passed from inside through each two adjacent holes and twined with said torsional spring, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDUARD BERNEBURG.
