HAT.
.Application filed April 20, 1923.
To'aZZ whom t may concern.:
Be it known that HERBERT L. Moens`v a citizen oi" the United States, residing at Baltimore,in the State of Maryland, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hats, of `which the following is a speciication.
This invention has reference to improvements in hats and is particularly directed to an improved attachment for connecting' the sweat-band to the hat.
The object of the invention is to directly connect the sweat-band itself to the hat by stitching in such manner that the stitching will sustain the sweat-band in a floating condition and spaced from the interior wall of the hat-crown whereby the, hat will readily conform to any irregularities of the head. and at the same time provide ventilating passages between the crown and sweat-band without the expense of a separate ventilating element and the cost of eii'ecting its attachment.
I am aware that it has heretofore been proposed to provide a conformator attachment for hats which conformator is interposed between the sweat-band and the crown wall of the hat. Such a structure is illustrated in IT. S. Patent 1,362,343 granted to me.
My present invention however diil'ers from that of my patented device in that I have devised a way to attach the sweat-band through the aid of machine stitching that enables me to omit the interposed contormator of my prior patent and to sustain the sweat-band itself in a floating condition by suspending it by the stitching.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein,-
Fig. 1. shows the bottom or under side of a hat with the sweat-band attached in accordance with my present inventiom--a portion of the hat-brim being` broken away at one side to show the continuous character of the suspension stitches.
Id`ig. 2 illustrates the hat in cross-section, an
Fig. 3. shows an enlarged sectional detail through a portion of the crown and brim and the spaced sweat-band together with the suspension stitching.
Referringl to the drawing, the numeral 5, designates the top of the hat crown;l 6 the Serial No. 633,394.
ever that the invention may readily be applied to hats ot materials other than straw in which sweat-bands are employed.
The sweat-band 8, which is usually of leather may have its lower1 edge 97 finished ofl" in any desired manner to present a neat and pleasing appearance but this has nothing to do with the present invention.
In carrying out my invention I form the sweat-band so that it will extend all the way around the interior of the hat crown but of a sufficiently smaller diameter to provide an annular space 10, all the way around the lower edge 9 oi the sweat-band and between said edge and the interior side of the crownwall. The lower edge 9 therefore of the sweat-band has no contact whatever with the crown-wall.
Having produced the sweat-band ot' the desired size for the hat, I make use oit' a special sewing-machine, and I proceed to stitch the sweat-band directlv to the crown. These stitches 11, are taken through the base of the crown at the bend 12 on the exterior of the hat between the crown-wall 6 and the brim 7 and said sewing-machine stitches cross the space 10 and pass through the lower edge 9 Ioit' the sweat-band itself as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3 ci the drawing. The stitches are uniformly spaced all the way around the crown and thus provide ventilation openings up through the annular space 10 between the sweat-band and the crown-wall.
It will thus be understood that the sweatband is supported in an upright position within the crown-wall by the series of sewing-machine stitches 11 taken through the lower edge of said band and the latter is therefore held in a lioating condition within the crown directly by said stitches.
The usual ornamental ribbon band 13 is provided on the exterior of the crown-wall and this latter band serves to conceal the stitches in the bend 12.
Having described my invention, I claim,-
A h-at having a crown and a brim extending laterally from the crown and forming an exterioi` bend around the hat at the junctioii of the brim with the crown, a sweat-band in the "c'rofvr zihd of size to-ifrtiid a :ifinular Space between itself ind the orwh and sewing stitches passing directly througfh the lower edge of the Sweat-hand itself and tending'aoross the said .space between Seid sweat-bands lower edge and the Crown-Wall Y edge in a floating conditio within the hat.-
Crown. I'n testimony whereof I aftx I'y signature. .f
HERBERT L. MOSES.
