To all whom it may concern Be it known that Cumulus H. MILLER says that he is a citizen of. the United States, residing at I-lunt-ington, in the county of l-luntington and State of Indiana, has in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Coal-Oil Burners, of whichthe following is a specification. y
This invention relates to liquid fuel burners, and particularly to an. oil burner provided with means for vaporizing the fuel before its combination with the air.
One particular feature of my invention resides in the arrangement within the main casing of the burner, of a draft-check or air control member, the object of which is to divide the air supplied to the mixing cha1nher into two parts, one of which is for the purpose of supplying. the usual necessary amount of air to provide a combustible mixture, while the other. is for the purpose of impinging upon the gasifi'ed mixture and centering it upon. a deflecting plate over the burner.
Another feature of importance resides in the particular arrangement of the generating chamber whereby carbonizing thereof is materially avoided, and by which arrangement a maximum degree of heating and thereby vaporization is obtained.
These and many other features, and advantages will be apparent to those familiar with the construction and operation of hydrocarbon fuel burners.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings by numerals of reference, 2 designates the burner base, comprising a vertical cylindrical casing or drum open at its bottom as at l and having at its upper end an annular reduced head 6, the closureplate 8 of which is provided with a centrally arrznged circular flame and gas passage 5. The structure as defined may be formed integrally, or if desired, the head 6 may be constituted as a separable unit.
The burner base, is adapted for use with the usual cook or heating stove or furnace, and as so employed, will be'seated upon the grate 9 thereof and a packing 10 of ashes or dirt piled around the lower portion of the base throughout an area such as will effectually prevent draft passing through any part of the stove grate except that portion covered by the base.
Supported upon radial arms 11 riveted in the side walls of the base 2, and concentrically arranged with respect to the latter, is aninner cup-shaped draft control or check member 12, open at its upper end, while the bottom 14 thereof is provided with a central draft opening 16 of suitable area.
The vapor nozzle comprises a pipe18 passing diametrically through the upper annular reduced head 6, by passing, through openings in the vertical walls thereof, said pipe having an upwardly directed jet opening 20 which is arranged in the axis of the burner base and the centrally located gas end of the pipeis closed by a screw cap 21. The upper edge of the wall of the cupshaped member 12 at diametricallyopposite points is provided with recesses in which seats the pipe 18.
Supported upon an overhanging arm 23 on a bracket 22 carried by the head 6 and offset from the vertical axisthereof is a circular deflecting plate 24. The said plate 24 is arranged above and coaxial with the gas passage 5 and is adapted to receive the impact of the flame which issues therefrom.
The feed end of the vaporpipe 18 is connected with a retort or vaporizing chamber 27' which includes a vertical side tube and a horizontal tube 26, the latter being arranged laterally of the axis of the base and head, so that no portion thereof lies directly thereover. By arranging the retort tubes, I avoid carbonizing or" smutting them, it being well known that a carbon deposit on the tube acts as an insulator against heat and detracts from the eiiicient operation of the burner.
The tubes are connected to one another passage 5 and draft opening 16'. The dead llu and to the pipe 18 by elbow couplings 28 and 30 respectively.
The fuel end of the retort or vapor generating tube 26, is connected by an elbow coupling 31 with a liquid fuel supply pipe 32, in the line of which, and elevated a considerable distance above the burners and to the rear thereof, is interposed a regulating needle valve 34, in a valve casing 35, shown specifically in Figure 7, said valve being constructed to control the fuel to the burner to a fine degree of adjustment. It is obvious that through this valve, the proper amount of fuel will be permitted to flow to the generating chamber or retort and upon said amount is dependent the pressure at the jet opening and the mixing chamber 36, and the resultant operation of the burner.
At the junction of the generating tube 26 with the fuel supply pipe 32 is arranged a vertical shield plate 60 which avoids the pre liminary heating of said fuel supply pipe.
Fuel for supplying the burner is carried by an elevated gravity feed tank 38, supported upon a post 39, having telescopic and adjustable relation with the standard 40 preferably supported or mounted upon the floor although it is obvious that the tank may be supported upon a shelf or bracket, even at a point a distance from the burner. The post 39 supports the tank 38 through an intermediate multi-way coupling 42 in which is arranged the main feed control valve 43 and which also is preferably of the needle-valve type which permits of finer degree of adjustment.
The burner is started by igniting a body of fuel absorbed asbestos 44, in a starting cup 46, slidably arranged on a transverse rod 48 in the lower portion of the burner base, a manipulating handle 50 being suitably connected therewith.
In the operation of my burner, the burner being started as is usual with the starting cup, air to be supplied to the vapor in the mixing chamber 36, passes upwardly through the base 2 and upon reaching the draft control or check cup-member, divides, a greater portion passing upwardly through the annular space defined by the vertical walls of said cup and said reduced head, while aminor portion passes axially through the central draft opening 16 and impinging on the flame just above the jet opening 20 acts as a means for centering it with respect to the deflector plate 24, said minor portion of air, of course, mixing with the flame, and aiding in supporting combustion. The flame is deflected by the plate 24, outwardly in an annular film, within the area of the grgatest heat of which lies the generating tu e.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new is the following 1. An oil burner of the class described comprising a cylindrical base member open at its bottom and having a head member formed on the top thereof, said head member having a central circular opening therein, a draft cheek member centrally supported in the upper portion of said base member below the head, said draft check member being cup-shaped in design and having a central opening in its bottom concentric with the opening in the top ofthe head, a fuel supply pipe, :1. vaporizing pipe connected to the latter and extending diametrically through the head of said base member, said vaporizing pipe having a jet formed in the top thereof concentric with the aforesaid openings, the portion of the device surrounded by said head member above the vapor pipe constituting a generating chamber, and a flame deflector adjustably supported on the base member and spaced above the head thereof, adapted to be positioned over the opening in said head,as and for the purposes described.
2. An oil burner of the class described comprising a cylindrical base member open at its bottom and having a head member formed on the top thereof, said head member having a central circular opening therein, a draft check member centrally supported in the 11 per portion of said base member below the head, said draft check member being cup-shaped in design and having a central opening in its bottom concentric with the opening in the top of the head, a fuel supply pipe, a vaporizing pipe connected to the latter and extending diametrically through the head of said base member, said vaporizing pipe having a jet formed in the top thereof concentric with the aforesaid openings, the portion of the device surrounded by said head member above the vapor pipe constituting a generating chamber, a starting member including a cup-shaped receptacle pivotally supported within said base member adjacent the bottom thereof and a handle for manually actuating the same, and a flame deflector supported above the head of the base member adapted for position over the opening in the top thereof, as and for the purposes described.
