F. CARTLIDGE MNING MACHINE Original Filed June b, 1916 15 Sheets-3heet Il sisted. The sun gear 38 is fast on the shaft The sun gear 37 forms part of a sleeve 39 rotatably mounted on the shaft 33 and located between such shaft and the sleeve 32. A sliding sleeve 40 has slidable toothed engagement with the sleeve 39 and 1s slidable in either direction along such sleeve a finger 41 which may be operated by a shift lever 42. The sleeve 40 is provided with clutch teeth at. both ends so that when slid in one direction from the'neutral position in which it is free from any locking engage ment, the teeth 43 on one end engage teeth 44 on the sleeve 32 to lock together the sleeves 32 and 39 and thus cause the sun and planet mechanism to rotate as a unit; and when slid in the other direction from neutral position teethft on the other end of the sleeve 4() engage teeth 46 on a brake Wheel 47 loosely mounted onthe shaft'i and cooperating with a brake band 48 which may he set or released by an operating handle -49 to hold stationary or permit any desired slipping of the brake wheel 47. The shaft 33 constitutes a driving member both for a feed operating member or drum 50 and a cooperating controlling member, takeup member, or paying out drum 51 shown respectively at the left and right hand sides of Figs. l and 3. For driving the member 50 the shaft is provided atr its lett. hand end, looking forward, with a driving' pinion 52 which. meshes with an internal gear 53 on such member in one position of the latter. The feed operating member or Winding drum 5() is mounted on an er fentrie bushingr Fiel which is in turn mounted on a stub shaft 55 around which it is adjusteble by an operating handle 56 to shit't the gear 53 into and ont ot mesh with the pinion 52. From Figs. il and 7 it will be notedr that the operating handle may assume different predetermined positions for the oonnecied and disconneci ed position of the drum 50.
For driving the paying out. drum or takeup member 51`r the shaft 3S has keyed on'its right hand end. looking forward, n sleeve 57 which at, its inner end is provided with gear teeth to provide a sun gear 58 and at its outer end forms n bearing surface for a rotatably mounted sleeve 59 which carries a plurality of planetary gears 60 which mesh with the` sun gear 58 and with an internal gear fil on the inside of such paying' ont drum or take-up member 5l. The pins G2 on whivh the planet gears are mounted are carried at their right hond en ds in the sleeve 59 and on their left hand ends carry a brake wheel 63 with which there cooper ates a brake band 64 which may be set or released by an operating handle do to hold stationary or to permit any desired dipping of the brake wheel 63. The sleeve 59 has an outer annular portion 66 between, which masses and tthe main portion of the sleeve is anV annular space into which proieots an annular sleeve member (3? carried by and c onstituting the bearing portion of the paying out drum 51, the member 67 being journaled on the sleeve 59 so that it supports the paying out drum. The outer surface of the annular member I-i and the inner surface of the annular portion G6 are toothed to eng ge with alternateiones of e series of eluteh discs 68 which 'are loi-ated between the parts 66 and 6T. The outer end of the sleeve 59 is threaded and has mounted thereon a Clutch setting nut 69 provided With an op erating ring 70 by which it may be rotated tolengage with greater or less pressure the web by which the paying out drum 51 is mounted on the annular member 6? so as to cause more or less firm interengogeinent of the clutch discs 68. It should be noted that the teeth of the internal gear 6l are of such length andthe ports ot sueh construction that a certain degree of movement of the drum 5l longitudinally of the shaft 32? is permitted.
At this point it should be noted that the drum 51 is smaller than the drum 50, but by reason of the reduction oerasioned by the driving of the drinn .50 throngh the pinion 52 and internal gear 53 the drum 5l, when the operating ring 7G is moved to elieot the looking of the parts as iater explained so that the drum 51 rotates at the same angular rate the shaft 33. will have a greater peripheral speed than the peripheral speed ot the drum 50. On the other hand, when tho drum 5l is driven at the reduced rate which is neemnplished by drivinf.,r the internal rear 6l through the planet gears 6) andsnn gear 5S the peripheral speed of the drum 5l will be less than that of the drum 5G and` moreover, the drum 51 will rotate in the opposite direction to drum 50.
The feed operating member or winding drinn 50 and the take-np member or paying out drum :'31 are herein shown as adapted to t-ooperate with :i chain comprising portions 74 und 75 and en intermediate bight 76 having! suficient slack to permit the necessary independence of action of the drums 50 and 5l. The chain may be carried through a suitable guide block 77 and over pulleys or' sheaves 78. 79, 80 and 81 or some of them at the far rorners of the frame 15, and over a pulley 82 between the pullevs or sheaves 78 and 79. These various pulleys or sheaves, or such of them as desired. may have swinging or swivel mounting. By means of these various nlleys or sheaves the chain may be 12: carried rom the drums or members 50 and 51 in different directions fbr getting different directions of movement.
in order to keep the parte properly lubricated, and free from the dust which always la Dit ion
' bodied in other forms upon this bie-ht is seen in Figs. 8, 9 and 10. ln the first of these views there is shown diagrammateally a machine with its bar perpendicular to the face and the bight 7G between the feed operating and take-up members is clearly shown. Tn Fig, 9 the machine is shown with the cutter bar ln advance of the rear end of the machine by quite a substantial amountt a somewhat extreme case beirutr shown for demonstration purposes. Here it will be noted that more cham has been taken in by the feed operating member 50 than has been paid out by the take-up member l so .that the amount of chain inthe hight has been increased, thereby increaeingr the length ot' the portion of the chain between the points at which the chain iea'ves the machine frame at its opposite ends. (lt course it will be nnderstood that a corresporuling position of the niachine relative to the working face may he secured in various other ways, for example, by releasingr the drum b v means of the handle 56, reversing! the motor. poliing the rear end ol' the machine around by the drum 5l and the portion To of the chain, after which the motor might again be run in its original direction, the operator throwingr the bandle 56 to cause the drum 50 to become active :1nd so that the machine Will` more ahead as previously described. It. may be noted, moreover, that by reason of the, tact that the member 5l tends to pay ont the portion n tore slowly than the portion 74 is wound in by the mcmben, a iosition corresponding Yto that shown in lig, I?, would he reached automatically unlees the friction band 64 were allowed tov slip. Fig. 'lil shows a position of the machine in which the rear end of the machim` has been allowed to get ahead of the cutter bar, this being accompiished, for example, by slackening up on the brake band 64 so that the portion 75 of the chain is paid out more rapidly than the portion 74 is wound in. ln this operation of the parte it will be noted that the slack biglit been snbstanf ially diminished and that there `ie less cham between the points at which the feed operatingl member leaves the machine at its opposite ends than in either of the other two positions.
While I have in this application specifically' described one form which my inven tion may assume in practice, it will be understood that this form of the same is shown for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be modified and em- O without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims. 4
