Description

J. KILCHER May 19, 1925.
SWING- Filed Sept. 50, 1924 Cheap Patented May 19, 1925.
U N ITED STATES moon amines, or MQUNTBLEASANT; IQWA' SWING.
Application-filed September 30, 1924. Serial No."? 40,"?"72.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB limerick, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Pleasant, in the county ,of =I-Ienry and State of Iowa, have invented certain of whichthe following is aspecification'.
This invention relates to improvements in swings and .hasfor itssprincipal 'object to provide a means whereby sa mocking-chair may be supported in a suspended position,
additionalmeans being provided for facilitating the oscillatory movement of the rocking chair while supported in the. suspended position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a swing of the above mentioned character, wherein a pair of cables and pulleys are provided, the occupant of the seat structure being adapted to actuate the cables for causing an oscillatory movement to be imparted to the seat structure.
A further object of the invention is to provide a swing of the above mentioned character, which is simple in construction, inexpensive, strong and durable and furthermore adapted for the purposes for which it is designated.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a swing which is adapted to be suspended from a ceiling, means being proruled for adjusting the height at which the seat structure is suspended.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the swing embodying my invention, and
Figure 2 is a front QlEWtl-tiOll thereof.
In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates a rocking chair of any well known construction. Extending upwardly from the sides of the rocking chair 1 are the strap irons 2. A pair of the strap irons are associated with each of the sides of the rocking chair. The supporting means for holding the rocking chair in a suspended position from the ceiling comprises a pair of chains 3 and 4.- respectively, the ends. of
is fastened at its new and useful Improvements 111- 21 Swing,
which are fastened .to theihooks 5 and 6 which are driven intotheiceiling A.
A cross chain 7 extends between the intermediate portions of the chains3 and 4 and ends to the intermediate portions of theichains'3 and l by means of :the hooks 8.
Extending through suitable loops9 .pro-
vided on the upper ends of each ,pair ofstrap 1rons 2 which extend upwardly from the opposite sides of the rocking- ;the Cl)iL111S';1O and 11 respective-l chair ,1 ,are
One end of each of the chains 10 and 11 is secured to the cross chain 7 adjacent the respective ends thereof by means of the hook 12. The other ends of the chains 10 and 11 have the hooks 13 carried thereby adapted for engagement with the links of the chains 10 and 11 whereby the rocking chair may be adjustably supported at any desired height oil of the floor B.
A pair of links let and respectively extend upwardly from the back of the rock ing chair. A pair of chains 16 and 17 are associated with the links 14 and 15 respectively, one end of each of the chains 16 and 17 being secured to the chains 3 and 4 respectively. The other ends of the chains 16 and 17 extend through the links 14: and 15 respectively and have suitable hooks such as are shown at 18 carried thereby for en gageinent with the links in the respective chains. The above construction provides a means whereby a rocking chair may be supported in a suspended position with respect to the floor, the chair being particularly suspended from the ceiling.
The means for facilitating the oscillatory movement of the rocking chair comprises a pair of cables 19 and 20 respectively. One end of each of the cables is secured to the respective sides of the rocking chair while the other end of each of the cables is secured to the upper ends of the strap irons on the respective sides of the rocking chair.
Cooperating with the cables 19 and 20 are a pair of pulleys 21 and 22 carried by the chains 3 and 4 respectively and the pulleys 23 and 24: which are secured to the floor I as at 25 at a point remote from the rocking chair. The cable 19 is trained over the pulleys 21 and 23 while the cable 20 is trained over the pulleys 22 and 24. This is clearly illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawing. The occupant of the rocking chair grasps the portions of the cables 19 and 20 which are disposed in front of the rocking chair and by exerting a downward pull thereon, the rocking chair 1 is adapted to swing rearwardly and by releasing the forward portion of the cable, the rocking chair will swing forwardly. In this manner the rocking chair may oscillate with the minimum amount of energy.
The provisions of aswing of the above mentioned character, may not only be used by small children but may also be used by grown persons.
The simplicity in which my improved swing is constructed enables the same to be readily and easily set up in position for use and the swing may be suspended from the ceiling of a room, of a porch or any other suitable place desirable.
While I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that various changes in the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is In a swing, a pair of chains anchored to a support so as to be slack, a second pair of chains attached to the first pair of chains intermediate the ends of the first mentioned chains so as to be suspended therefrom, a seat structure supported by the second mentioned pair of chains, a pair of pulleys one mounted on each of the first mentioned chains, a second pair of pulleys anchored at a point remote from the scatstructure, and a pair of cables trained through the alining pulleys and attached at its ends to the seat structure.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature.
J AGOB KILCHER.
