E. C. MORINE TRUCK CAB Filed April 1. 1922 I I [INVENTOR- A TTORNEY.
Patented May 19, 1925.
unirso srarss rarer orri TEDV/IN C. MORINE, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO WEATHERFROOF BODY CORPORATION, OF CORUNNA, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
TRUCK CAB.
Application filed April 1,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN G. MORINE, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Detroit, in the county of /Vayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Truck Cab, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the construction of vehicle bodies, particularly to the construction of truck cabs, and its object is to provide a novel door frame for truck cabs which shall be adapted to permit a swing. ing door to be mounted in its lower portion and a sliding curtain in its upper portion and which shall also be adapted to permit the sliding curtain to be moved down to the bottom of the frame when the swinging door is moved out of the path of the curtain.
In the accompanying drawing, Fig. l is a side elevation of the front end of a truck having a cab provided with a door frame embodying my present invention, the swinging door being in position and the sliding curtain drawn down to the swinging door.
' Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the swinging door removed and the curtain reversed and entirely closing the door opening. Fig. 3 is a perspective of a portion of the front member of the door frame. Fig. 4 is a. perspective of a'portion of the rear member of the door frame. Fig. 5 is a perspec' tive of a door curtain.
Similar reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views.
This invention is a modification of the invention shown in the patent to Hornor, No. 827,867, dated August 7, 1906, which shows a vehicle top embodying pairs of bows whose opposed faces are grooved to permit door curtains to slide up and down, up into the space below the roof covering and down to the tops of the swinging doors. No provision is made in this patent, however, for permitting the door curtains to be moved down to the bottom of the door openings.
Truck cabs are often constructed with side door openings and with swinging doors closing the lower portions of the door openings, the upper portions being closed, by
1922- Serial No. 548,560.
ing doors are usually removed in the summer, and then, when it rains, the driver uses 3 any convenient make-shift to shelter himself. In the cab construction shown in the drawing, a sliding door curtain 1 of sufficient length to close the entire door opening is provided and the door frame is formed with grooves 2 in its opposed uprights 3 and 4 so that the curtain may slide down to the bottom 5 of the door frame and completely shut out rain when the swinging door 12 has been taken 0E.
As shown in Figs. 3 and 4, these frame members may be curved inwardly at their lower ends to meet the side bars'6 of the chassis which is usually narrower than the upper portion of the cab. Notches 7 and 8 may be cut into frame members latch-plate 10 which, if they are sufliciently wide to extend across the grooves in'the 3 frame members 3 and 4, maybe removed with the swinging door 12 during warm weather. If these are narrow or sufficiently depressed, the -pintles of the hinges alone need be removed to permit the door being taken off.
The door curtain slides up into the top in the manner shown in the Hornor patent. Sheets 13 of celluloid may be mounted in one end of the door curtain, which is preferably taken out and turned upside down when the door 12 is put on or taken off so that these windows will be at the upper portion of the door opening whether the door 12 is on or off.
Any desired construction of flexible door curtain may be employed and the details and proportions of the cab construction may all be changed by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of my invention as set forth in the following claims.
1. In a cab construction, a door frame having grooves in the opposed faces of the upright portions thereof from the top to the bottom of the door opening, a flexible door curtain slidable in said grooves, and a swingthe grooved faces of these to receive the hinges 9 and part of the 2. In a cab construction, a door frame having grooves in the opposed faces of the 5 upright portions thereof from the top to the bottom of the door opening, a flexible door curtain slidable in said grooves, and a sWinging. door mounted in the lower part of the door opening, the door curtain beingadapted to be turned upside down and slidable in said grooves either end up and having Window openings.
