UNITED STATES' PATENT orifice.
CLARENCE O-` GRONBERG, OF ELGIN, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO ALBERT 1VI. PRICE, OF ELGIN, ILLINOIS.
LEAD PENCIL.
Application filed January V27, 1922. Serial No. 532,062.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE O. GRON- BERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elgin, in the county of Kane ann State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lead Pencils, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to lead pencils oi the type employing force-feed means for feeding' the lead to projecting position yond the end of the pencil.
My primary objects are to provide a novel, simple andi inexpensive construction of pencil of the type referred to and wherein the bore through which the lead is fed extends eccentrically of the axis of the pencil, thereby to afford in a pencil having force feed means, the advantage arising from so disposing the lead.
Referring to the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the parts comprising the illustrated embodiment of my invention, certain of the 'parts being shown in separated condition. Figure 2 is a view in sectional elevation of one end of the pencil structure. Figure 3 is a sim ilar view of the other end of the pencil structure. Figure 4 is a section taken at the line 4 on Fig. 3 and viewed in the direction of the arrow; and Figures 5, 6 and 7, sections taken at the lines, 5, 6 and 7, respectively, on Fig. 2 and viewed in the direction of the arrows.
The pencil shown comprises a barrel, or shell section, 8, a tip-section 9 screwed at one end into one end of the barrel 8, and lead-feeding means hereinafter described.
The tip-section 9 contains a bore 10 extending entirely therethrough lengthwise of this section and disposed eccentric to the axis of the pencil and in which the lead, represented at 11, is located when positioned for use, the outer end portion of the section 9 being tapered toward its outer extremity concentric with the bore 10 as Shown. rThe extremity of the tip-portion 9 is shown as slit lengthwise to provide a tongue 12 having a protuberance 13 which yielding-ly presses against the side of the lead and prevents it dropping out of the bore 10.
The leadfeeding means referred to coniprise a disc 14 located in the barrel 8, in spaced relation to the tip-section 9; a tube 15 connecting together the disc 14 and the tip-section 9and extending to one side of the axis of the pencil; and a rod 16 extending at the opposite side of said axis and secured at one end in asocket 17 in the tipsecticn 9 and at its opposite end in a socket 18 in a collar 19 surrounding the reduced end portion 20 of ahead 21 and in which the latter is rotatable. The rod 16 also extends through, and is secured in, an opening 22 in the disc 14 and extends guidingly through a slot 23 in a block 24 located in the barrel 8 and movable therein lengthwise of the latter'. The means referred to also comprise a screw-threaded rod 25 extending coincident with the axis of t-he pencil and secured at one end to the reducedr portion 2Ol of the head 21 and journaled, at its opposite end, at an unthreaded portion 26 thereof, in the disc 14, this rod having threaded engagement with the block 24 through which it extends; a rod 27 connected at one end with the block 24 and extending into, and slidable in, the tube 15, and a cap 28 which frictionally grips the outer end of the head 21.
In the assembling of the parts, the tube 15, tip-section 9, disc 14 and rod 16 may be first assembled to the position shown, and the head 21 with the collar 19 thereon and the screw-rod 25, assembled therewith, then assembled with the block 24, to cause the rod 25 to engage the threaded opening in the block 24. The two lunits thus formed are then assembled to a position in which the rod 27 extends into the upper end of the tube 15 and the rod 16 extends into the groove 23 and at its upper end into the socket 18 in which it is secured. The cap 28 being' removed, the barrel 8 is slipped over the end of the structure, thus assembled, opposite that at which the tip-section 9 is located, and is screwed tightly into place at its threaded connection with the tip-section and thereafter the cap 28 applied to the head 21. The lead to be used for writing, and represented at 11, is then inserted into the bore 10 through the outer end of the latter and upon rotating the head 21, through the medium of the cap 28, the lead 11 is fed outwardly through they bore 10, it being understood that rotation of the head 21 in one direction operates to move the rod 27 toward the outer end of the tip-section 9 and rotation in the opposite direction operatesto move- .t1iis rod in the opposite drectlon. t
While I have illustrated and described a particular construction embodying my invention, I do notwish to be understood as intending to limit it thereto, `a-sthe same may be variously modified and alteredwthout departing from the spirit of my invention.
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is
l. 'A-lead pencil having abodyportion providedivith a tip, said body portion beingV of `substantially uniform cross section throughout tits `length up z-to f said tip, zsaidf tip; being of less cross'fsectionv than said body,
portion xandfcontainingvagbore eccentric to theA axis of said lbody rportion, `aifeed Vrod I slid-able in said bore, and .a t'hreadedfrotatablefrod concentric With-saidbody portion and' operatively `vengat-ging said rod :iorpropeiling; the latter.
2. lead pencil having a body i portion providedavithcia"tip, said body portion being of substantially uniforin'crossYsectiou 'for kpropelling saidjrod provided with a button at'the upper end of said body por -tion.
3. A lead pencil having a hollow body portion containing va bore, for a lead, open at its opposite ends, a tube in said body portion and communicating at one end :with said bore, a-stationary member insaid body dort-ion, a? rod connected With the portion oi the' devicein'avhich said bore ist locate'd,`said rod extendingv throughsai'd member, a block having-sliding engagement with said rod and having a rod portion'lslidable in said tube,V saidY blockcontaining a threaded opening, ,and a member having athreaded rod portion extending into, and rotatable in, said body portion -and engaging the threaded opening in said rblock yand operatingavhen rotated to move said block longitudiaially ofssa-id body portion.
