may, or SALEMTNEWTJERSEYZ" (Mul -FEEDING lvrncrranrsn To all 10/1 am it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. ArARs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salem, in the county of Salem and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can-Feeding Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
In changing grades of the granular material, or in changing sizes of cans to be filled, there is danger that the liquid meas uring device may not be properly adjusted and a surplus of liquid be fed to the cans. In such cases some of the granular material may be floated or flushed over the edge of the can. The objectof my invention is to provide simple mechanism which will effectively prevent such overflow. This object I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a view partly in vertical section and partly in elevation of the feed mechanism of a can filling machine embodying my invention,
Figure 2 a sectional view on line 22 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 a perspective view of a disk which is a feature of my invention.
In the drawings the numeral 1 indicates the frame of the machine, 2 the funnel wheel, 3 the turret, and 4 the hopper. In the form shown the funnel wheel is splined to a vertical shaft 5 and includes funnels 6 for the granular material and funnels 7 for the liquid, the liquid funnel discharging into the granular funnel at a point 8 above the necks 9 through which both materials pass to the cans 10. The above described features constitute no part of the present invention.
I provide a disk 11 provided with a series of openings 12 corresponding in number with the number of funnels, and substantially corresponding in size to the exterior of the necks of the funnels, and with a central opening 18 adapted to receive the shaft. The disk is preferably provided with upwardly extending annular flanges 13 surrounding the openings and has a. depending boss 14 bored to receive the shaft. The boss is provided with an annular groove 15 adapted to receive lugs 16 extending from the parts of a split nut 17 having an interior thread corresponding to a thread 18 on shaft 5. The parts of the nut are connected by bolts 19.
In use disk 11 is mounted on shaft 5 with its opening 12 in register with the openings in the necks of the funnels. Nut 17 is then screwed upwardly thereby moving the disk upwardly, with the walls of openings 12 embracing the necks 9 of the funnels, until its lower surface is at a level suflicient to permit cans of the size to be used to be readily fed thereunder but not sufiicient to permit any part of the granular contents of the can to escape. The disk should extend sufficiently beyond the outer line of openings 12 to cover cans of any diameter likely to be fed to the machine.
It will be seen that a disk as constructed and positioned will completely cover any space between the peripheries of the funnel necks and the peripheries of the cans and will absolutely prevent escape of any of the granular contents of the cans.
While I have described my invention as taking a particular form, it will be understood that the various parts may be changed without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction set forth, but consider that I am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come within the scope of the appended claims. I
I-Iavingthus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a canning machine, a series of feed funnels having tubular necks; a disk having a series of flanged openings adapted to embrace the necks, and means for adjusting the disk relatively to the necks.
2. In a canning machine, a series of feed funnels having tubular necks; a drive shaft; a disk mounted upon the shaft and having flanged openings adapted to embrace the necks of the funnels; a boss depending from the disk and embracing the shaft, and a split nut mounted upon a threaded part of the shaft and engaging with the boss.
3. In a canning machine, a series of feed funnels, a shaft; a disk mounted upon the shaft and having openings adapted to embrace the necks of the funnels; a boss depending from the disk and embracing the shaft and provided with an annular groove; a split nut mounted on a threaded part of the shaft and lugs projecting from the split 6 nut and taking into the groove.
4. In a canning machine, a series of feed funnels having tubular necks; means for feeding granular and liquid material to the funnels; a disk having a series of flanged l0 openings adapted to embrace the necks of the funnels, and means for adjusting the disk upon the necks.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of tWo subscriblng Witnesses.
