Description

A. v. DA COSTA TOY Filed Nov. 12, 1921 State of Rhode Island,
laobject to provide a toy Pam-teem," 12, 1925.
V. DA COSTA, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
TOY.
Application flledllovember 12, 1921.. Serial No. 514,755.
To all whom it may concern:
Be-itknown thatARIHURV. -DA Cos'm, a citizen of the United States, residing. at Providence, in the: count of Providence and as invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is aspecification,
This invention relates'to improvements in. the construction of toys, and has for its having a bulbous body with a head and limb members connected to the body memberby an elastic cord whereb "these limb members are universally yi'eldab e relative to the body.
1 A" further object of the invention is the rovision of means within the bulbous members whereby a noise is made to serve as a rattle when the toy is agitated.
With these and other objects ofconstruction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the ap ended claims.
n-the accompanying drawings:
28' Figure 1 is a front view of my improved toy.-
Fi m2 is aview of the toy in section showing'itshead and limbs as being. connected'to thebody by an-elastic cord.
' Figure 3 is a section-of the head-member an'd'the body-member, showing the edges of one half of the sphere as fitting into those ofthe other half of the sphere.
It is found very desirable to roduce 'a toy i in the" form of an attractive 011 having a bod -member and a head-member and to flexibly and 'yieldably attach arms andle to this body, and it is found of great'ia vantagexinsuch a toy to form the members to shake-about when the toy is agitated to serve as'a rattle, and'the following is a detailed description of one meansby which thisvresult may be accomplished With reference to the drawings, designatesthe hollow, bulbous body-member of the toy which may be in any suitable or desired shape such as egg-shape, sphericalshape, or the like. Y
On the-upper surface of2this body member I have'mounted' a headmember 9 and on the-lower side- 0f t i bo yin view, the invention consists of certain novel features mounted two radially-disposed legs, each being preferably formed of two for more spherically-shaped members 11 and 12which are provided with oppositely-disposed holes In order to secure these legs and the head member to the body I have employed a piece of elastic cord 14 folded at its middle into two parts and knotted it as at 15 at the fold. These two parts are then passed down through an opening 16 in the top of theof each of the outer leg-members whereby the tension on this elastic cord performs three functions; it secures the'head to the top of the body and each of the-legs to thebottom portion of the body whereby all are flexibly or yieldably mounted upon the body and in addition the point between the legmembers are also flexible whereby either 0 the legs serves as a convenient flexible handle by which the toy may be grasped and therein to serve as a rattle.
In addition to attaching the legs to the body I also provide a pair of spherical arm members 23 which are secured to the body bymeans of an elastic cord 24 which passes shaken about to agitate the loose material through the bodyand through the arm mem bers being knotted as at 25 on the outer surface thereof. These knots on the arms are covered. by a small cup-shaped member 26 while the knots on the legs are covered by similar members 27 and-the knots on the I outer surface of the head-member are covered by a hatmember'28. 7
All of the members 'of which the toy is constructed. are preferably formed in halves, a
each. half being-pressed into the desiredform, each member being constructed. of any suitable sheet material preferabl celluloid,
the meeting edges 29 and 30 of t ese halves being designed to fit one with the other and be connected together preferably by cement.
By my improved construction a doll is formed extremely light in w'eight and all of the members are flexibly or yieldabl mounted upon a body portion and in ad ition'the legs are also flexible or yieldable at their joints between the members of which they are constructed,
The device is extremely strong and durable in construction and handsome and attractive in appearance and serves as a very effective rattle.
The foregoing description is directed sole- 1 towards the construction illustrated, but I desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susce tible, the invention being defined and limited only by the terms of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A toy comprising a hollow bulbous body member having hollow bulbous head and limb members connected thereto by an elastic connector, all of said members having convex contacting surfaces whereby they are universally yieldable relatively to the body member and are held under yielding tension to roll one upon the other to automatically return to normal when displaced.
2. A toy comprising a hollow bulbous body member having a head mounted thereon, arms each constructed of a plurality of bulbous members, each having convex contacting surfaces and connected together .directl through said body by a continuous elastic cord under tension whereby said members roll one upon the other to automatically return to normal after having been displaced.
A to comprising a bulbous body havmg a ead, a air of legs each con- 4. A toy comprising a hollow bulbous body having a head, legs each constructed of a plurality of hollow spherical members, and an elastic cord extending through the several members of each leg and through the body and head members flexibly connecting them all together to roll one upon the other and return to normal when displaced, a pair of arm members having convex contacting surfaces, and an elastic cord flexibly connecting said arms to said body, said cords being under tension to permit a relative rolling movement of said members to return the parts automatically to normal after having been displaced.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
