Be it known that I, VILLIAM J. S'roor, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident ofVVheeling, county of Ohio, and State of est Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ash Gates for the Fire Boxes of Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
1 This invention relatesjto ash gates for the fire-boxes of boilers, and it has for'its priinaryobject to provide a close-fitting ash gate having associated therewith mechanism whereby 1t may be conveniently actuated to and from open position A further object isto provide a gate of the character mentioned which may be readily adjusted to occupy anyrequired angle to its mounting to insure its proper seating in relation to the gateway -or opening in the fire-box wall.
In describing the invention in detail, reference is had to the accompanyingdrawings in which 1 Figure 1 is a transverse section of the inventiondispos'ed in closing relation tothe furnace opening through which the ashes are removed .Figure 2 is a tion; and- Figure 3 is a side elevation of a modified form of mechanism whereby the gate may be actuated toy and from closing position with respect to the gateway or ash opening.
Referring to said drawings, 1 indicates an inclined wall forming a part of thebottom front elevation of the invenof the fire-box of a boiler ofjfire-tube or water-tube type, the same beinglocated over an open ash pit to which ashes and other residue of the coal, following combustion, are delivered through an opening or gateway 2 provided in said wall. I.
@Fixed upon arotary shaft 3 for movement into and out of closing relation. to the gateway 2 is a gate comprising'a cast-metal body 4 which carries upon its'in-ner face tile blocks-5 of suitable refractory material for protecting said body 4 from the excessive heat which obtains within the fire-box. As herein shown, said blocks are anchored in, place by transverse integral ribs or fins 6 carried on the inner face of the/ gate body 4. Integral outstanding bearing lugs 7 formed on the outer face of the gate body adjacent to the opposite ends thereof and substantially midway between the upper and lower edges thereof carry pins 8 upon which are pivotally mounted bearing-like eye portions 9 formed intermediate the ends of arms 10 which? are keyed upon the shaft 3. Thus, asis apparent, said gate body has a considerable range of rotary movement which permits of angular adjustmentthereof relative to said arms 10. To provlde for such adjustment, threaded bolts 11. are mounted in eye portions 12 formed on each of said arms 10 at opposite sides -'of the eye portions 9, and fixed on the outer end of each of said bolts is a member, as a wing nut 13, whereby said bolts may be advanced or retracted by hand. Said bolts are adapted for adjustment'in a manner which is manifest for positioning the gate body at any desired angle to its supporting arms 10, thus providing for such ad justment as may be required to effect seating of the gate in proper relation to the gateway 2.
The shaft 3' is ournaled in bearing brackets 1 1- which, as herein shown, are mounted upon an I-beam 15 which underlies the firebox wall 1 at a suitable distance above the gateway. Keyed upon an end of said shaft is a worm sector 16 which has operative-1y engaged therewith a worm 17 carried by a shaft 18 journaled in bearings 19 formed on a bracket 20'which is mounted upon a side of the lire-box. Said shaft 18 carries a hand wheel 21 whereby it may be rotated for effecting, through the intermediate worm 17, sector 16 and shaft 3, the swinging of the gate to and from its closed position.
In the modified form of gate operating mechanism disclosed in Fig. 3, the shaft 3 has fixed on an endthereof a crank arm 22 which carries thereon a weight 23 which serves as 'a counterbalance by means of which the gate is normally maintained in closed position, said shaft normally occupying the inclined position shown- Said crank arm is connected-by a pivoted link 2 L to a piston'rod 25 which is operable by steam or hydraulic pressure admitted to a suitably located power cylinder 26 for swinging said arm from theinclined position shown in said Fig. 3 to a substantially upright position for effecting opening of the gate, and for returning said arm to its inclined position for closing said gate. A pivoted dog 27 is normally held in a position abutting a shoulder member 28 fixed on the shaft 3 for locking the lat ter against rotation from the position in. which the gate is held closed. Attached to an arm 29 carried by or in fixed relation to said dog is apull rod 30 which has associated therewith tension means, as the spring 31, whereby it is normally held in operative relation to the shoulder member 28. hen it is desired to open the gate, the dog is first disengaged from said shoulder member by a pull on the rod 30 against the tension of said spring 31, whereupon pressure is admitted to the inner end of the cylinder for actuating inward movement of the piston rod. Said shoulder member is adapted to be again operatively engaged at its opposite end by said dog when the gate reaches its fully open position, thereby in like manner preventing chance actuation of the gate to I closing position.
lVhat is claimed is 1. An ash gate for furnaces and the fire-boxes of boilers, comprising in combination with an inclined bottom wall of the furnace, said wall having an ashremoval opening therein, of a shaft journaled adjacent to the upper outer edge of said opening, arms fixed to said shaft, a metallic gate body pivotally carried by said arms, a refractory lining carried by said body, adjustable means for-effecting angular adjustment of said body with respect to said arms, and means for imparting rotary movements to said shaft for swinging said gate body into and out of closing relation to said opening.
2. An ash gate of the character described, comprising, in combination with a bottom wall of a furnace, said wall having an ash removal opening therein, of a shaft journaled on said wall adjacent to one side of saidopening, arms fixed to'said shaft, a metallic gate body carrying attaching lugs on its outer face, said arms having intermediate portions thereof pivotally attached to said lugs in carrying relation to said body, adjustable means for effecting angular adjustment of said body with respect to said arms, and means for actuating said shaft to effect swinging movements of said body to and from closing relation to said openin An ash gate of the character described, comprising in combination with a bottom wall of a furnace, said wall having an ash removal opening therein, of a shaftjournaled on said wall adjacent to one side (.f
said opening, arms fixed to said shaft, a metallic gate body carrying attaching lugs on its outer face, said arms having intermediate portions thereof pivotally attached to said lugs in carrying relation to said body, adjustable means carried by said arms at opposite sides of their pivotal connection with said body whereby angular adjustment of the latter with respect to said arms may be effected, and means for actuating rotary movements of said shaft for carrying said body into and out of closing relation to said opening.

An ash gate of the character (lCSClibGi. comprising, in combination with a bottom wall of a furnace, said wall having an ash removal opening therein, of a shaft journaled on said wall adjacent to one side of said opening, arms fixed to said shaft, a metallic gate body carrying attaching lugs on its outer face substantially midway between its lateral edges, said arms having midlength portions thereof pivoted to said lugs in carrying relation to said body, adjusting screws carried by each of said arms on opposite sides of said midlength portion whereby angular adjustment of said body in relation to said arms is effected, and means for actuating rotary movement of said shaft for carrying said body into and out of closing relation to said opening.
5 An ash gate of the cha 'acter described, comprising, in combination with a bottom wall of a furnace, said wall having an ash removal opening therein, of a shaft journaled on said wall adjacent to one side of said opening, arms fixed to said shaft, a metallic gate body carrying attaching lugs on its outer face, said arms having intermediate portions thereof pivotally attached to said lugs-in carrying relation to said body, adjustable means for effecting angular adjustment of said body with respect to said arms, a worm gear sector fixed on said shaft, a worm in operative relation to said sector, and means for rotating said worm.
