HnA'rEn coran.
Application led March 6, 1923. Serial No. 623,197.
To. all whom t may concern;
lle it known that I, CLARAGRANT, a citizen el' the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis, State of lriissourii, have invented a new and useful lleated Comb; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ot the invention, such as will en-v able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
'lhe inventionrelates to electrically heated combs and has for its object to provide a device oi' this character particularly adapted vtor straightening the hair.
il 'further object is to provide a comb, the teeth oit which have disposed therein resistances, which when current passes through the same, heats the teeth., therelii-y allowing heat to be applied to the hair as the comb is run through the hair, and consequently straightening the hair.
l-i tui-ther object is to provide a Ll-shaped spring channel member for arching the back et a comb and housing the ends ot he re-V sistance c oils and wires of the comb.
il. further object is to provide rheostat means whereby the amount of current passing tothe resistances may be controlled.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in Vthe combination and arrangement ot parts as hereinafter set `iliorth, shown in the drawing, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the seopevof what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
ln the drawing:- y
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the comb partly broken away to show the handle structure.
Alifigure 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Figure l.
Figure 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional. view through a portion ot the comb.
Figure il is a vertical transverse sectional view through one ot the rheostat plugs.
Figure 5 is an enlarged detail sectional viewthrough a portion of the comb showing the resistances in section.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the body ot the comb and 2 integral teeth carried thereby, which are adapted to be passed through the hair during` a hair straightening operation. Disposed within eonically shaped recesses 3 which entendthrough the body 1 ot the comb and into the teeth are conieally shaped members l in which resistance coils 5 are 1 disposed. The conically shaped members are connected together by members (i, which rest on the baci; ot the body 1 ot the comb, theretore all ofthe resistance, members may be termed in a single unit and placed within the recesses S. To protect the ends ot the resistances, a il-shaped member 7 is 3rovided, which arches the bach ot the body 1 and has its flanges provided with inwardly extending` lugs 8, which when the flanges 9 ot the channel memlier 7 are i'orced apart and the channel member forced onto the body 1, said 'lugs 8 are received in recesses 10 ot the body member 1 and hold the channel member 7' against displacement. The resistances 5 are connected together by means ot wires 11 and are in circuit with the battery 12 through the wires 13 and 113;. However the wire 14 is connected to a rheostat 15, which is shown in a conventional form in Eigure 5, said rheostat being' in turn in circuit with the battery. 12 through the wire 16 and switch 17. lt will be seen that when the switch 17 is closed, the resistance coils 5 will be heated and consequently the teeth 2 ot the comb will also be heated `according to the position ot the rheostat 13. Therefore it will be seen that the amount of heat imparted to the teeth 2 may be regulated, andthe teeth maintained heated during the hair combing operation, thereby straightening the hair and taking the curl out of the hair. The body member l is provided with a handle 18 adapted to be grasped by the operator Vwhile using the comb, however it is provided with an aperture 19 extending therethrough and through which the wires 13 and 111V pass. The rheostat is-torined from a cylindrical casing 2O havinga cap 21 threaded thereon. The cap 21 is pivotally mounted on a contact member 22 and the cylindrical member 2O is pivotally mounted on a Contact member 23 carried by the wire 14, however the contact members are in axial. alignment with each other. Disposed ,within the cylindrical member 2O is a removable plug 24, which plug has a rheostat coil 25 imbedded therein, the rheostat being gaged according` to the voltage of the source of supply of current to properly heat the comb, however it is to be understood that various sizes of coils l25 may be used in plugs according to the voltage. The ends of the coil 12 are co1 nected to contact members 26 and 27. The Contact member 27 engages a dise 28, which is normally forced upwardly by a conductor spring 29, which conductor spring contacts With the conductor member 28, however it forces the rheostat plug 24 upwardly and maintains the contact members 22 and 2G in engagement with each other. It will be seen that when it is desired to remove the rheostat plug that it will only be necessary to unscrew the cap 2l, at which time the plug can be easily removed.
From the above it Will be seen that an electrically heated comb is provided, which is particularly adapted for straightening hair, and one wherein means is provided for regulating the amount of heat Within the teeth of the comb, thereby obviatingv danger of burning the hair during a hair straightening operation.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is:-
A hair strai htening .comb -liaying teeth, hollow conical y shaped members disposed .in eonieally shaped recesses of the teeth,
said hollou7 conically shaped members bein(T connected together'at their outer ends ane held spaced and against movement in relation to each other, resistance coils permanently fixed in .said eonically shaped members, a U-shaped member detachably connected to the comb .and arching the rear side thereol .and housing the .outer ends vof the conically shaped members7 .said U-shaped member also forming a housing for conductor wires.
In testimony whereof l have signed my name to this speciiication in the presence of .tiro subscribing yWitnesses.
