To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD J. -Wane, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chisholm, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Concentrating Machines, of which I do declare the following to be a specification.
My invention relates to concentrating machines and has for its object the provision of a simple durable and eflicient machine for washing sand and earth from various ores and especially from iron ores in which fine particles of the minerals which it is desired to recover are mixed with fine sand or earth.
Said invention is further particularly desirable for treating the waste from log washers or other devices in which coarse ores have been treated.

In the drawings F is a frame, or support of any suitable structure, upon Wl1lCl1.'lS erected a rotatable shaft or post 3, adapted to turn in any suitable bearings, as 23 and 35. Preferably splined to saidv shaft are collars 2, 2, spaced from each other, both adapted to turn with said shaft and adapted to be moved or adjusted vertically on said shaft. Said collars respectively are adapted to be held in their adjusted positions on said shafts by set screws 39, 39. Mounted onthe lower one of said collars 2, is a cup-shaped spider, 1, supported at its upper end by the upper one of said collars 2. Upon said spider is mounted aninverted dish-shaped concentrating table X of any suitable material preferably comprising a metallic bottom plate 7, a wood or cement intermediate plate 20, and a linoleum cover 2]. cemented to said plate 20; Said table is preferably provided with a wide central aperture for convenience in reaching parts above it from a position below said table. The surface of said table may, if desired, be provided with riiiies not shown but well known to the art. Concentric with said table and underlying the periphery thereof is a stationary trough M (shown only in Figs. 1 and 6) which is vertically divided into two compartments, M and M for receiving the waste or tailings and the concentrates of metalliferous ore respectively from the table X. Said compartment M is adapted to discharge such waste through waste pipes A. and B, and said compartment M is adapted to discharge said concentrates through stock pipes C, D and E. Encircling said shaft is a fixed sleeve 4 attached by a collar 84 to said frame in any suitable manner, and extending appronin'iately to the plane of the upper end of said table when said table is adjusted to its most elevated position. Said fixed sleeve is preferably spaced from said shaft, and near its lower end said space is filled with any suitable bearing material as babbitt, 27, to prevent vibration of said fixed sleeve.
Encircling said fixed sleeve'at or near its lower end is a vertically adjustable sleeve 11, prefe "ably spaced from said fixed sleeve and provided at each end with a packing of any suitable material, as babbitt, between said adjustable sleeve and said fixed sleeve, which adjustable sleeve is secured in its ad justable position by any suitable means as by set screws, 39.
Mounted onthe lower end of said adjustable slecve and encircling the same is a horizontally disposed inverted dishshaped apron, or head board G, adapted to extend a short distance over said table X, and preferably including an eccentric sector or extension G This sector is for the purpose of discharging the wash water from the head board on to the table along a line gradually nearing the periphery of said table, thus closely following the narrowing line of ore toward the periphery of the table and maintaining the pressure of the water against the ore without .the necessity of increasing the volume of water. At the free end ofsaid eccentric sector the feed of water flows on to the table at a higher level to wash away any particles of ore that may have adhered to the table at said level.
Extending upward from said headboard is a reservoir or feed box or hopper containing two compartments, N and H respectively. Said compartment N is adapted to receive through a feed pipe Y the ore or pulp to be treated, and the compartment H is adapted to receive clear water as through the pipe Said compartment N is adapted to discharge on to said apron through holes 49 and the compartment H is adapted to discharge through similar holes 19. Said compartment N may be subdivided to reduce its capacity by a removable partition. plate 13. The bottom of said box is preferably inclined. Approximately surrounding said box is an adjustable gate K of any suitable structure, adapted to be moved in any suitable manner with respect to said discharge ports 49 and 49 so as to wholly or partly open or close said ports, as by raising or lowering said gate. Said gate is preferably held in any of its adjustable positions by a set screw 37.
Extending from said box is a vertically disposed horizontally directed inclined bafiie plate L, in contact with and secured to said head board G, and extending over said table to the periphery thereof. Clamped to the side of said baffle plate as by a clamp plate I, is a vertically adjustable plate 22 of any suitable material, preferably of rubber adapted to contact with said table for the purpose of dividing the feed or pulp thereon from the concentrates at that point. A water pipe 0 extending to a point over said table near the periphery thereof on the concentrates side of said battle plate, is provided for the purpose of supplying a flood of water for washing the remaining concentrates from the periphery of said table at that point.
In operation, said compartment N being supplied with a mixture of line ore, water and sand, commonly called pulp, and said compartment I-I being supplied with water, the table is rotated by any suitable means, not shown, but well known to the art. The gate K is then raised to permit the pulp to discharge from said compartment N and the water to discharge from said compartment H, said pulp spreading upon approximately one half of said head board and flowing thence upon the revolving table, and said water spreading upon the other half of said head board and flowing thence upon said revolving table. The tendency will be for the metalliferous particles to settle and cling to the surface of said table and to move much more slowly toward its periphery than the sand or earth with which it is originally mixed. Such sand or earth is therefore discharged early from the periphery of said table into said trough compartment M the metalliferous particles moving more slowly to the periphery of saidtable are discharged fron'i the periphery thereof into compartment M of said trough, Said head boa rd is vertically adjustable with respect to said table in view of the various qualities of pulp to be treated. The vertical adjustment of said table permits of changing the depth of said trough, or of adjusting the table to the level of any driving n'iechanism, or of other necessary or desirable arrangements.
lVhat I claim is 1. In an ore concentrating machine, the combination with a suitable support, of a bearing mounted upon said support a rotatable shaft erected in said bearing, a circular inverted dish-shaped table keyed to said shaft and adapted to rotate therewith, a stationary sleeve depending from an overhead portion of said support and encircling the upper end of said shaft, a vertically adjustable sleeve encircling said stationary sleeve, an inverted dish-shaped distributor head-board mounted on said adjustable sleeve and adapted to extend partly over said table, a reservoir positioned on the upper face of said distributor head-board and encircling said adjustable sleeve, said reservoir being divided by a vertical division wall into compartments for pulp and water respectively, a baffle plate extending from said reservoir and over said distributor head-board over said table, said reservoir compartments having discharge ports formed in the lower edges of their outer walls adapted to discharge upon said distributor head-board, and a vertically adjustable gate encircling said reservoir for controlling said discharge ports.
In an ore classifying machine, the combination with a suitable support, of a hear- .ing mounted upon said support, a rotatable shafterected .in said bearing, a circular conical table keyed to said shaft and adapted to rotate therewith, a stationary sleeve depending from an GVBlFllOtlCl portion of said support and encircling the upper end of said shaft, a vertically adjustable sleeve encircling said stationary sleeve, an inverted dish-shaped head-board mounted on said adjustable sleeve and adapted to extend partly over said table, a reservoir positioned on the upper face of said head-board and encircling said adjustable sleeve, said reservoir being divided by a vertical division wall into compartments for pulp and water respectively, a baffle plate extending radially from said reservoir over said headboard and table, said compartments having dis charge ports formed in the lower edges of their outer walls adapted to discharge upon said head-board, a vertically adjustable gate encircling said reservoir for controlling said discharge ports, and a surface cover of linoleum secured to the upper face of said table.
3. In an ore concentrating machine, the combination of an inverted dish-shaped rotatable concentrating table, an inverted dish-shaped non-rotatable distributing head board positioned above said concentrating table, means for discharging a mixture of metalliferous particles and sand and water upon said distributing head board, means for discharging Water upon said head board, a battle plate erected on said head board and extending radially over said table and a vertically adjustable plate mounted on said bal'l'le plate and adapted to contact with said rotatable table.
4. In an o-re concentrating machine, the combination with a suitable support, of a rotatable shaft support-ed thereby, a rotatable concentrating table mounted upon said shaft, a stationary sleeve depending from said support, said sleeve being concentric with said shaft, a vertically adjustable sleeve mounted on said stationary sleeve, and a distributing head board mounted on said adjustable sleeve and adapted to overlap a portion of said rotatable table.
5. In an ore concentrating machine, the combination of a rotatable concentrating table, a vertically adjustable distributor head board positioned above said table, a reservoir erected upon said head board, said reservoir containing two compartments, said compartments having discharge ports formed therein, and an adjustable gate adapted to govern said ports.
6. In an ore concentrating machine, the combination of a vertically adjustable rotatable concentrating table, a vertically adjustable distributing head board positioned above said table and adapted to overlap a portion of the same, a reservoir for material to be treated erected upon said head board, said reservoir being adapted to discharge upon said head board, a reservoir for water erected upon said head board, said water reservoir being adapted to discharge upon said head board, and means for regulating the discharge from said reservoirs respectively.
7 In a concentrating machine, the combination of a vertical rotatable shaft, a concentrating table mounted on said shaft and adapted to turn therewith, a sleeve for said shaft above said table, a vertically adjustable sleeve for the first said sleeve, and a head board mounted on the second said sleeve and adapted to move vertically therewith.
8. In a table for a concentrating machine, the combination of a metallic base plate, an intermediate plate of concrete, and a surface cover of linoleum-like material cemented to said intermediate layer.
9. In a concentrating machine, the combination of a rotatable concentrating table member, a distributing head board member positioned above said table and adapted to overlap a portion of the same, one of said members being vertically adjustable, a baffle plate erected upon said head board and adapted to extend over said table and a vertically adjustable flexible plate mounted on said bal'lle plate and adapted to contact with the surface of said table.
10. In a concentratingmachine, the combination of a rotatable vertical shaft, a concentrating table mounted upon said shaft and adapted to turn therewith, a stationary sleeve for said shaft positioned above said table and spaced from said shaft, means for supporting said sleeve, said space being filled at the lower end with antifriction metal, a vertically adjustable sleeve for said stationary sleeve spaced from said stationary sleeve and rings of antifriction metal mounted on the opposite ends of said adjustable sleeve and adapted to move therewith and to bear against the outer face of said stationary sleeve.
11. In a concentrating machine, the combination of an inverted dish-shaped rotat able table, an inverted dish-shaped distributing head board extending partly over said table, a reservoir mounted on said head board, a radially directed battle plate mounted on said board and extending from said reservoir outwardly beyond the periphery of said board, and a vertically adjustable extension plate mounted on the outer end of said battle plate and adapted to contact with said table.
