To all. whom it may concern: Be-it known that I, CHARLIE A, PAYNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dalton, in the county of Whitfield and State of Georgia, have invented an Improvement in Builder Mechanisms for Winding Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to builder mechanisms used in yarn winding machines for laying yarn upon yarn receivers or bobl5 bins.
It is sometimes desirable to place a few layers of yarn upon the yarn receivers in the form of preliminary windings or a bunch as it is sometimes called, in order that the feeler, in ifceler looms, may call forthe change of filling or'replenishment prior to complete exhaustion ofthe filling in the running shuttle. Many variations of bunch building mechanisms haveheretofore been suggested for' p'laci'ng such preliminary windings or bunch upon the yarn receivers or bobbins before commencing the regular x'vindings but these have been of a complicated construction and not readily applicable to the ordinary builder mechanism, whi'clrusu ally consists oE abuilder cam and a builder arm conn'ectcd'by a flexible chain or strap to the yarn guiding'm'eans. Mounted in the brackets 6 carried by the cross-ties 2 is the rocker 7 on which is mounted an arm 8 carrying a weight 9. Also secured to the rocker 7 is the ring rail lifting arm 10 which, as usual, is shown as carrying a roller 11 upon which rests the foot 12 of the ring rail traversing rods 13, only one of which, however, is shown. The rod 13 extends upwardly and is secured to the ring rail 4. Mounted upon the rocker 7 is a third arm 14 to the upper portion of which is connected the chain 15, the other end-of which is connected to the builder mechanism for imparting to the ring rail its traversing movements longitudinally of the yarn receivers or bobbins, all as usual in this class of machines.
The chain 15 or other flexible connection I passes over a guide pulley 16 and at its lower end 17 is connected to the usual drum 18 secured to or formed as part of the let-off gear 19 which is mounted upon the builder arm 20. The builder arm 20 is pivotally mounted upon a stud or dead shaft 21 carriedby the machine frame and its rear end portion is provided with a weight 22 which is sufficient to normally over-balance the weight of the other end of the builder arm I which carries a stud or roller 23, Fig. 2.
Mounted upon the rotating shaft 24 supported by the machine frame is the usual builder cam 25 against the surface 26 of which the pin or roller 23 bears under the action of the weight 22. The shaft 24 is driven froln a going part of the machine, but since the means for rotating the shaft 24 is old and well-known and the details of which form no part of the present invention, is it not herein shown and described.
Mounted in the bearings 27 secured to the builder arm 20 is the worm shaft 28 carrying a worm 29 which meshes with the teeth of the gear 19, and secured to the end por tion of the worm shaft is the pick wheel 30 which" is stepped along at intervals by the usual pick mechanism. Such pick mechanism is not herein shown and described because it is of well-known construction and the' d'etails thereof form no essential part of the present invention.
Fromthe construction thus far described it will be apparent that as the builder cam 25 is rotated, the builder arm 20 will be given 'a' rocking movement on its pivotal support 21 and will cause the ring razl 4 to be moved up and down or traversed by the lifting tendencyo'f the weight 5) and the lowering [tendency imparted from the.

All the parts thus far described and their operation are old and well-known and constitute one good form of builder mechanism to which the present invention is readily applicable without substantial change in construction of the builder mechanism and the parts constituting the same.
In accordance with the present invention, the builder arm carries a bunch builder member or segment which at the commencement of the winding operation acts in conjunction with a bunch builder cam to lay a few preliminary or bunch winds upon the yarn receivers or bobbins, and on the com pletion of such preliminary windings or bunch is automatically thrown out of action.
The bunch builder cam 31 is shown as mounted on a rotating shaft 24 which carries the usual builder cam 25, and pivotally mounted upon the builder'arm 20 is the segment In the present instance the builder arm 20 has detachably secured thereto a bracket 33 by means of a bolt 34 and the segment is conveniently mounted upon the bracket In the present instance the bracket carries a stud 35 which extends outwardly from the vertical wall of the bracket and the segment 32 has its hub portion 36 pivotally mounted for rocking movement upon the stud. The segment 32 or bunch builder member has a surface 37 which is preferably of less extent than a complete circle and which during the building of the bunch cooperates with the bunch builder cam 31.
Machines of this general type are usually provided with a shipper mechanism or belt shipper, which in the present instance is shown as a rod 38 mounted for lengthwise movement upon the machine frame and carrying a belt shipper fork 39 which embraces the driving belt 40 driven from a suitable source of power. The main driving shaft 41 of the machine has mounted thereon the fast and loose pulleys 42 and 43 one or the other of which may be engaged by the belt 40 for operating the machine or stopping it.
The shipper rod 38 is controlled by a manually operated member or shaft 44 which has an arm 45 extended therefrom to engage a member carried by the shipper rod. In the present instance, such member comprises the yoke 4G'which is secured to the shipper rod and, has a pin 47 extending therefrom for engagement with the arm 45 secured to the manually operated shaft 44,
the construction being such that by movementof the shaft 44 in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 1, the belt 40 will be moved from the fast pulley 42 to the loose pulley 43 and the machine brought to rest. Converse- 1y, movement of the n'ianually operated rod 44 in the reverse direction transfers the belt from the loose to the fast pulley, thereby starting the machine to again commence winding the yarn upon the yarn receivers or bobbins.
Connected to the shipper mechanism, of which that last above described constitutes one .good general form, is a controller for controlling the bunch builder member or segment 32. In the present instance the controller comprises a rod 48 which is guid: ed for movement in the guides 49 secured to a portion of the machine frame. At its lower portion the rod 48 is provided with a shoulder 50 on which the segment32 normally rests during the regular traverse winding operation, as indicated by full lines in Fig. 2.
The upper end portion of the rod 48 is connected to a flexible member or chain 51 which passes over a suitable guide 52 and has its other end connected at 53 to a spring 5-1 which is placed under tension when the machine is stopped. In the present instance the spring 54 has one end connected to the chain or llexible connection 51, as stated, and its other end is secured at 55 to an arm 56 secured to the shipper rod 38 by the set screw 57. By adjustment of the arm 56 longitudinally of the shipper rod 38 the amount-of tension placed upon the spring 54 when the shipper mechanism is moved to stopping position may be varied.
While the machine is laying the yarn upon the yarn receivers or bobbins by regular traverse, the segment 32 is in its inoperative position, as indicated in Fig. 2, and rests upon the shoulder-.50 of the controller which isin its lowered position, due to the fact that substantially no tension is placed upon the spring 54 when the shipper is in machine running position. When, however, the shipper is moved in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 1, to stop the machine, the spring 54 is placed under tension, thereby moving the segment 32 from the full line position, Fig. 2, to the dotted line position, with a leading end 58 of the segment resting against the now stationary bunch builder cam 31. Before starting the machine again it is usual in this type of machines to depress the ring rail to its lowest position and consequently to cause the builder arm 20 to drop and carry the roll or pin 23 of the builder arm out of contact with the builder cam 25. When the builder arm is thus lowered, it carries with it the segment 32 and lowers the leading end 58 of the segment out of contact with or below the bunch builder cam 31. whereupon the tensioned spring 54: acting through the controller moves the segment 32 into the position indicated in Fig. 3, so that when the ring rail is again released the bunch builder segment 32 is raised with the builder arm into on gagement with the bunch builder cam, a condition which is illustrated by Fig. 1. When now the shipper mechanism is moved to start the machine and the bunch builder cam 31 is rotated, it will act upon the segment 32 to impart to the yarn guiding means a short traverse, determined by the shape of the bunch builder cam, and as the bunch builder cam rotates in frictional contact with the surface 37 of the segment, the latter will be progressively moved from its full operative position at the commencement of the bunch towards its inoperative position as indicated in Fig. 2, until when the bunch has been completed, the bunch builder cam 31 will have moved the segment in a direction longitudinally of the builder arm into its inactive or inoperative position, and thereupon the roll or pin 23 on the builder arm will again come into engagement with the builder cam 25 and impart to the yarn guiding means the regular or service traverse.
From the construction described it will be seen that when the machine is stopped for dotting, the segment controller will be placed under tension through the spring 54, and the leading end 58 of the segment will contact with the bunch builder cam. until when the builder arm 20 is depressed either by the foot or otherwise, Fig. 3, the tensioned controller will swing the segment into its full operative relation to the bunch builder cam, so that on release of the builder arm or yarn guiding means the bunch builder cam and the segment will be operatively engaged to automatically start building the bunch when the shipper mechanism is again moved to running position.
Conditions of use of yarn carriers or bobbins in the loom sometimes dictate that the bunch or preliminary windings shall be of different sizes or extent, in accordance with the present invention this variation in size of the bunch is controlled by the position assumed by the segment when it is in its full operative position for commencement of the bunch windingoperation.
-lhe bracket 33 in the present instance is provided with a shelf or portion 59 in which is adjustably mounted the stop 60. As shown, the stop 60 comprises a threaded bolt or stem which screws into the shelf 59 and is held in adjusted position by the lock nut 61. By manipulation of the nut 61 and then of the stop 60 the position for the commencement of winding the bunch by the bunch builder mechanism may be varied as may also be varied the size of the bunch built. because such size is dependent upon the time necessary for the passage of the segment from beneath the bunch builder cam during its movement longitudinally of the builder arm by the cam.
It is convenient, also, to provide an additional stop, such as 62, for engagement by the segment 32 when it is thrown to inoperative position.
The bunch builder mechanism in accordance with the present invention and as hereinbefore described is therefore readily adaptable to a builder mechanism of ordi nary construction without material change therein, and the construction is such, in accordance with the invention, that when the machine is stopped for dofling, the segment controller is placed under tension and is caused to act when the builder arm is depressed to its lowest position, to throw the bunch builder segment into bunch building relation with the bunch builder cam, so that upon starting up the machine again the bunch builder mechanism automatically proceeds at once to build the bunch, and on completion of the bunch, as hereinbefore described, it passes directly to service traverse for completing the windings of yarn upon the yarn receivers or bobbins.
\Vhat is claimed is:
1. In a builder mechanism for yarn winding machines, the combination of a builder cam and builder arm, yarn guiding means connected to the builder arm, a bunch builder cam, a bunch builder segment mounted on the builder arm, and a segment controller rendered effective when the machine is stopped and the builder arm is lowered for moving the builder segment into operative relation with the builder cam for automatically winding a bunch when the machine is again started.
2. In a builder mechanism for yarn winding machines, the combination of a builder cam and builder arm, yarn guiding means connected to the builderarm, a bunch builder cam, a bunch builder segment mounted on the builder arm, and a segment control ler rendered effective when the machine is stopped and the builder arm is lowered for moving the builder segment into operative relation with the builder cam for automatically winding a bunch when the ma chine is again started, and a stop for limiting the movement of the segment to operative position.
3. In a builder mechanism for winding yarn upon yarn receivers, the combination of a builder cam and builder arm, yarn guiding means connected to the builder arm, a bunch builder cam, a bunch builder member mounted on the' builder arm for cooperation with the bunch builder cam, stopping mechanism, means connected with the stopping mechanism and acting upon the bunch builder member to cause it to move automatically into operative relation with the bunch builder cam when the builder arm is lowered from engagement with the regular builder cam.
4. A builder mechanism, comprising, in combination, a builder arm, a builder cam for imparting regular traverse movements to the builder arm, a bunch builder cam, a bunch builder member mounted on the builder arm for movement into and out of cooperative relation with the builder cam, stopping mechanism, connections between the stopping mechanism and bunch builder member acting when the machine is stopped to move the said member towards bunch building position and automatically completing said movement when the builder arm is depressed from engagement with the builder cam.
5. A builder mechanism, comprising, in combination, a builder arm, a builder cam, for imparting regular traverse movements to the builder arm, a bunch builder cam, a bunch builder member mounted on the builder arm for movement into and out of cooperative relation with the builder cam, stop-ping mechanism, connections between the stopping mechanism and bunch builder member acting when the machine is stopped to move the said member towards bunch building position and automatically com- ,pleting said movement when the builder arm is depressed from engagement with the builder cam, and a stop for limiting the movement of the builder member and determining the position for starting the bunch.
(i. In a builder mechanism, the combination of yarn guiding means for directing yarn to a yarn receiver, a builder cam, a builder arm, connections between the builder arm and yarn guiding means, a bunch builder member mounted upon the builder arm for automatic movement into and out of bunch building position, and a bunch builder cam cooperating with said bunch builder member to build the bunch and acting to progressively move bunch builder member longitudinally of the builder arm towards and finally into inoperative position.
7. In a builder mechanism, the combination of yarn guiding means for directing yarn to a yarn receiver, a builder cam, a builder arm, connections between the builder arm and yarn guiding means, a bunch builder member mounted upon the builder arm for automatic movement into and out of bunch building position, an adjustable stop for determining the extent of movement of the bunch builder member towards bunch building position and conse uently the size of the bunch, and a bunch uilder cam cooperating with said bunch builder member to build the bunch and acting to progressively move the bunch builder member longitudinally of the builder arm towards and finally into inoperative position.
8. In a machine of the character described, the combination of yarn guiding means :for directing yarn to yarn receivers, a builder cam, a builder arm connected to the yarn guiding means, a bunch builder cam, a bunch'builder member mounted upon the builder arm for movement to and from cooperative relation with the bunch builder cam and having a surface of less extent than. a complete circle which bears upon the bunch builder cam and by which the bunch builder cam progressively moves the bunch builder member during the building of, the bunch until, when the bunch is completed, the bunch builder cam moves the bunch builder member out of cooperative relation with the bunch builder cam.
9. In a machine of the character described, the combination of yarn guiding means for directing yarn to yarn receivers, a builder cam, a builder arm connected to the yarn guiding means, a bunch builder cam, a bunch builder arm pivotally mounted on the builder arm and having a curved surface less in extent than a complete circle on which the bunch builder cam acts during the bunch building operation to build the bunch and to progressively move the bunch builder arm towards and finally into inoperative position when the bunch is completed.
10. A bunch builder attachment for yarn winding machines, comprising, in combination, a builder arm, a rotating bunch builder cam, a bunch builder member pivotally mounted upon the builder arm and having a surface which bears upon the bunch builder cam during the building of the bunch and by which the bunch builder member is moved about its pivot by the bunch builder cam towards and finally into inoperative position at the completion of the bunch, and a controller rendered; efiective when the machine is stopped for automatically moving the bunch builder member into operative position.
11. In a machine for winding yarn upon yarn receivers, the combination of yarn guiding means, a builder arm connected to said means,'a builder cam, a bunch builder cam, and a rocking bunch builder segment mounted on the builder arm and having a surface less than acomplete circle which is moved by the rotation of the builder cam to automatically throw the rocking bunch builder out of operation on the completion of the bunch.
12. In a machine for winding yarn upon yarn receivers, the combination of yarn guiding means, a builder arm connected to said means, a builder cam, a bunch builder cam, and a rocking bunch builder segment mounted on the builder arm and having a surface less than a complete circle which is moved by the rotation of the builder cam to automatically throw the rocking bunch builder out of operation on the completion of the bunch, and means for moving the bunch builder with cooperative relation with the bunch builder cam When the machine is stopped and the builder arm is lowered for engagement with the builder cam.
13. In a machine of the character described, the combination of yarn guiding means, a builder cam, a builder arm connected to the yarn guiding means, a bunch builder segment mounted on the builder arm for swinging movement longitudinally of the builder arm, a segment controller rendered effective when the machine is stopped for swinging the bunch builder segment on the builder arm towards operative position, and a bunch builder cam which acts upon the segment during the building of a bunch and progessively moves the segment longitudinally of the builder arm to inoperative po sition.
14. In a machine of the character described, the combination of yarn guiding means, a builder cam, a builder arm connected to the yarn guiding means, a bunch builder segment mounted on the builder arm for swinging movement longitudinally of the builder arm, stopping mechanism, a segment controller tensioned by movement of the stopping mechanism to stopping position and tending to move the segment aut0- matically towards operative position, a bunch builder cam which acts upon the seg ment during the building of a bunch and moves the segment to inoperative position when the bunch is completed.
15. In a machine of the character described, the combination of yarn guiding means, a builder cam, a builder arm connected to the yarn guiding means, a bunch builder segment mounted on the builder arm for swinging movement longitudinally of the builder arm, a segment controller rendered effective when the mechanism is stopped for swinging the bunch builder segment on the builder arm towards operative position, and a bunch builder cam which acts upon the segment during the building of a bunch and progressivelymoves the segment longitudinally of the builder arm to inoperative position, and an adjustable stop for limiting the movement of the segment under the action of the tensioned means for determining the size of the bunch.
16. In a machine of the character described, the combination of yarn guiding means, a builder arm connected thereto, a builder cam, a bunch builder segment mounted on the builder arm for movement longitudinally thereof into and out of operative position, a bunch builder cam, shipper mechanism and a segment controller including a spring which is tensioned by movement of the shipper mechanism to stopping position for automatically moving the segment in a direction longitudinally of the builder arm towards bunch building position and completing the movement to such position when the builder arm is depressed from engagement with the builder cam.
17. In a machine of the-character described, the combination of yarn guiding means, a builder arm connected thereto, a builder cam, a bunch builder segment mounted on the builder arm for movement longitudinally thereof into and out of operative position, a bunch builder cam, shipper mechanism and a segment controller including a spring which is tensioned by movement of the shipper mechanism to stopping position for automatically moving the segment in a.
direction longitudinally of the builder arm towards bunch building position and completing the movement to such position when the builder arm is depressed from engagement with the builder cam, and a stop for the segment which determines the size of the bunch.
18. A bunch builder adapted for ready association with a builder mechanism, comprising a bunch builder segment constructed and arranged to be pivotally connected to the usual builder arm for swinging movement longitudinally thereof, a bunch builder cam, means actuated when the machine is stopped and the builder arm is depressed for automatically moving the segment about its pivot on the builder arm into position for winding the bunch when the machine is again started.
19. In a builder mechanism, the combination of yarn guiding means, a builder arm connected thereto, a builder cam, a bracket attached to the builder arm, a bunch builder segment pivotally mounted on the bracket,
stops for limiting the pivotal movement of the segment, a bunch builder cam for cooperating with the segment, and yielding means placed under tension when the machine is stopped and acting to turn the segment into operative position when its movement to such position is unobstructed.
20. In a yarn winding machine, the combination of yarn guiding means for directing yarn to yarn receivers or bobbins, a builder arm connected thereto, a builder cam, a bunch builder segment mounted upon the builder arm, a rotary bunch builder element for cooperation with the bunch builder ment to place preliminary windings of the yarn receivers or bobbins, stopping mechanism for the machine, and a segment con troller actuated by movement of the stopping mechanism to stopping position for moving the segment to bunch building position.
21. In a yarn winding machine. the combination of yarn guiding means for directing yarn to yarn receivers or bobbins, a builder arm connected thereto, a builder cam, a bunch builder segment mounted upon the builder arm, a rotary bunch builder element for cooperation with the bunch builder segment to place preliminary windings on the yarn receivers or bobbins, stopping mechanism for the machine, and a segment controller including a spring which is placed under tension by movement of the stopping mechanism to stopping position to move the segment to bunch building position.
