To all 'whom tmay concerns' Be it known that I, ANDREW MoPIiEizsoN,
a citizen `of the UnitedStates, residing at vWard, in the county of Moody and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hog Sprayers, of which the following is a specification, lfeference being had to the accompanying drawings. t
This invention. relates-to certain improvements in hog sprayers and it is an object of the invention to providel a mechanism operating automatically to spray` or sprinkle a liquid insecticide or lother medicated or antiseptic liquid over hogs or other stock.
Another object of the invention is to provide a `novel and improved device of this general character comprising a container adapted to hold a supply of desired liquid under pressure together with a spraying medium in `communication with said container,said medium being normally inactive `but operating under the influence of the hog or other stock passing under the spraying medium. i

As `disclosed in the accompanyingA drawings, l` denotes a pair ofsills arranged yin parallelism `and the opposite end portions of said sills have secured thereto the upstanding supporting frames 2 each `being Y herein disclosed assubstantially in the form of an inverted U. The upper portion of each of the frames 2 have the side members thereof connected by a saddle 3 providing a support for the tank or container T. As herein disclosed, the tank T is cylin-l drical in form and is provided in its upper portion with a normally closed filling openlng 5.
Arranged exteriorly of the tank or container T and supported thereby7 is ahand pump 6 operating to provide the tank. or container T with a charge of compressed `air to facilitate the discharge of the liquid therein through the spraying elements E to be hereinafter referred to. The pump 6 "has leading from the discharge opening thereof a pipe 7 which extends within the tank or container T and terminates in close proximity to the bottom thereof lwhereby the liquid within the tank or container T serves to seal to prevent escape of the compressed air` within the tank or container T.
The-sills l at a point substantially midway between the frames 2 are provided with the upstanding plates 8 which serve as supports for the pivot members 9 of th'eoppositely disposed platforms or trip boards 10. The boards or platforms l0 have swinging movement ina. vertical direction and are normally in a raised or substantially horizontal position. VVhenin their normal positionthe platforms or boardslO 'are suby stantially coplanar with the steps 1I supported by the sills l outwardly of the frames 2, the rear marginal portions of the steps 1l being provided with the inwardly directed flanges 12 with which the outer extremities of the platforms or boards lO contact from below whereby the upward swinging movement of the boards or platforms 10 is positively limited.
A spraying element E is arranged adjacent to each end of the tank or container T and comprises a nozzlelat disposed exteriorlyof the tank or container with the lower portion of the nozzle substantially flush with the lower portion of the tank or container T so that said nozzle is protected against contact therewith by an animal passing under the tank or container. l? low through the nozzle 14 is under control of a valve 16 operatively engaged with a rock arm 17 supported by an outstanding bracket 17 carried by a saddle l. The rock arm 17 is also operatively engaged with a trip rod 18, said rod extending downwardly adjacent to a side member of a frame 2 and having its lower end portion operatively engaged, as 19, with the outer end por tion of the platform or trip board 10, so that upon depression of such pla form or board 10 the lvalve 16 will be adjusted into open position so that the contents of the container or tank T will be sprayed` or sprinkled upon an animal passing under such tank or container. ylChe valve 1G is normally maintained closed through the instrumentality of a retractile member 20, herein disclosed as a coil spring, having ene end portion secured to the rod 18 and its opposite end portion to a side member of a frame 2. rlhe side members of the frames 2 are each provided with series of longitudinally spaced openings 21 to Vprovide means whereby the saddles 3 can be raised or lowered to comgensate for animals of different sizes.
Secured to the lower portions of the vertical members of the frames 2 connected to similar sills 1 are the plates or guards 22 which serve to maintain the animals upon the platforms or boards 10 when passing under the tank or container T.
By hating the elements E positioned at opposite ends of the tank or container T and outwardly thereof it is assured that the liquid will be sprayed or evenly distributed over the stock from head to tail.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a hog sprayer constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience andfacility with which. it may be assembled and operated, ann it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification withc ,t departing from the Drinciples and spirit thereof and for this reason l do not wish to be understood as limiting nfyself to vthe pr arrangement and formation of the several parts herein sho ivn in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
1. A spraying mechanism comprising, in combination, a pair of sills arranged substantially in parallelisn'i, a tank supported by and above said sills, transversely disposed steps carried by the opposite end portions of the sills, platforms extending -ransversely of the sills and positioned between the steps, means for pivotally supporting the inner marginal portions of the platforms to permit said platforms to have swinging movement in a vertical direction, said platforms and steps being normally substantially coplanar, said steps being provided with means with which the platforn'is contact' from below to limit the upward swinging movement of the platforms, spraying elements arranged at opposite ends of the tank and in comiminication therewith, a valve for controlling the flow through each of the elements, an operative connection between each of the platforms and a valve for moving said valve into open position upon depression of the platform, means coacting with each of said operative comiections for constantly urging upwardly the platform with which such connection is engaged, and

2. A spraying mechanism comprising, in combination, a pair of sills arranged substantially in parallelism, a tank supported by and above said sills, transversely disposed steps carried by the opposite end portions of the sills, platforms extending transversely of the sills and positioned between the steps, means for pivotally supporting the inner marginal portions of the platforms to permit said platforms to have swinging movement in a vertical direction, said platforms and steps being normally substantially copla-nar, said steps being provided with means with which the platforms contact from below to limit the upward s vinging movement of the platforms, spraying elements arranged at oppositey ends of the tank and in communication therewith, a valve for controlling the flow through each of the elements, a rock shaft operatively engaged with a valve for moving the valve into open position upon rotation of the rock shaft in one direction, a rod operatively engaged with the rock shaft and with a platform, depression of said platform rocking the shaft in a direction to move the valve into openposition, a retractile member engageable with the rod to constantly urge said platform in the opposite direction and to maiir tain the same in its normal position and upstanding guard plates arranged above and atopposite sides of the platforms and below the tank.
3. A spraying mechanism comprising, in combination, a pair of substantially parallel sills, upstanding supporting frames secured to said sills, each of said frames being substantially in the form of an inverted U, a saddle bridging the space between the upper portions of the side members of each of the frames, means for connecting the saddles to the side members, a tank resting on the saddles, means for holding the tank to the saddles, a spraying element in communication `with the tank, and means operable under weight for opening communication between the element and the tank.
