BULLEY.
e anation filed .nu ee, 1923. semi no. stasis.
To all whom it may OOIZOGWL.
Be it known that I, IJTERITILL F. MAGLEY, citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Columbia City, in thecounty fi of Whitley and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pulleys, of which the followingis a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in pulleys especially of that type used on motor shafts for driving a belt, and the object thereof is to provide a stock pulley equipped so as to be fitted to shafts of various sizes by the use of intercl'iangeable bushings.
This object is accomplished by the con struction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which:
Fig. 1 is an end view'of a pulley embodying the invention mounted upon a shaft;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same; and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary end view of th pulley opposite that of Fig. 1. I
The characters appearing in the description refer to parts shown in the drawings and designated thereon by corresponding characters.
The invention comprises a pulley, the rim 1 ofwhich is made up of laminated paper clamped between metal end discs 2 and 2 that are held together by longitudinally disposed tubes 3 that extend through the rim and discs, and the rim has an interior sleeve 4- that extends centrally through the discs and rim, snugly fitting therein, the outer ends of the tubes being upset so as to form heads on the outer faces of the respective I discs.
A feature of the invention is a perma nently fixed key 5 located in the wall of the interior sleeve, one edge of which extends into the adjacent wall of the rim, while its opposite edge extends into the bore of the sleeve, and one endof which is permanently secured in the end disc 2. This permanent.
111g 6 is fitted. A set-screw 11 that extends through the rimand the sleeve bears against the key 9and secures it from longitudinal movement, there being an opening 12 in the bushing through which the set-screw extends.
The end disc 2 has a tongue 13 projectingradially inward and is notched into the corresponding end of the sleeve 4 so that turning movement between the sleeve and the disc 2 is obviated.
In utilizing the invention the pulley, including its permanent key is fitted onto a bushing with an external diameter such as to fit tightly in the bore of the sleeve, the bushing having a key-way for the reception of the permanent key so that turning movement between the bushing and the pulley is obviated. The shaft then is fitted into the bushing and secured by means of an ordinary key and the set-screw so as to prevent turning movement of the bushing on the shaft. By substituting bushings of various internal bore, the pulley may be fitted to various sizes of shafts. In the event the pulley is to be mounted upon a shaft the diameter of which fits the bore of the sleeve, the bushing may be eliminated, and in which event the permanent key is fitted in the keyway of the shaft.
By the construction set forth the permanent key serves to hold in fixed relation the interior sleeve, the rim of the pulley and one of the end discs, and also serves to hold the pulley so as to prevent its turning movement on the bushing or shaft fitted therein.
IVhat I claim is 1.. A pulley having a rim, a pair ofv end discs between which the rim is clamped; an interior sleeve extending through the rim and end discs; a permanent key fixed in the sleeve and projecting into the rim, the bore of the sleeve and into one of the end discs; and a bushing having external and internal key-ways and being fitted into the sleevewith the permanent key engaged in its external key-way. I
2. In a pulley, a laminated paper rim, a pair of metallic end discs between which the rim is clamped; an interior sleeve extending through the rim and discs; a key permanently fixed in the sleeve, and extend ing into-the rim and one of the said discs, one edge of said key projecting into the bore of the sleeve; and a tongue projecting from the other end disc and having notched fixed lodgment in the corresponding end of the interior sleeve.
3. In a pulley, a, rim; a pair of end discs between which the rim is pern'mnently clamped; an interior sleeve extending through the rim and discs; a key permanently fixed in the sleeve, and extending into the rim and one of the said discs, one edge of said key projecting into the bore of the sleeve; and a tongue on the other disc having locked connection with the corresponding end of the sleeve.
4. In a pulley, a rim; a pair of end discs between which the rim is permanently clamped; an interior sleeve extending through the rim and discs; and a key permanently fixed in the sleeve, one of its edges extending into the rim and its opposite edge,
projecting into the bore of the sleeve.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
