IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,513, dated July 28, 1874 application filed May 16, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, CHARLES C. ALeEo, of Pittsburg,in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gar-lVindow Fastenings; and I do hereby declare that the 'ollowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of' reference marked thereon, which forms part of this specification.
rEhe nature of my invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of catches for a fastener for car-windows, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and then pointed out in the claim.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a front elevation, Fig. 2 an enlarged View of the fastening G; and Fig. 3 an enlarged View of the fastening G.
A represents the frame, and B the windowsash, of a car-window. My fastener' is com. posed of a box let into the frame A, with a cam working therein, and catches attached t0 the sash. The box is formed of' a plate, C, cast with a suitable aperture, and a llange, D7 extending rearward around the edge of Said aperture, except at the lower end where the flange extends a short distance below the @pelture; or, in other words, the plate is allowed to project a short distance above the lower end of' the flange to form a stop, a. E represents the cam, which is pivoted, near its upper front corner, in the upper part of' the llange D, the lower end of the cam forming a hook, b, which is thrown forward beyond the plate C by the gravitation of the cam. On the lower end of' the cam is aprojection, d, which strikes against the stop a, and prevents the hook of the cam from being thrown too far forward. The box C D, with its cam E, is let into a recess made in the inner edge of the frame A, as shown in the drawing. G and G represent the two catches secured to the sash B, each consisting of a plate fastened on the sash, and provided with a fbrward-projecting inclined flange, said llanges running in opposite directions, the upper end of the flange of the upper catch being close to the surface of the frame, and the lower end of the flange of' the lower catch is also close tc the frame. The portions of said flanges which are close to the frame run for a short distance parallel therewith, and the balance is inclined, as described.
Then the window is closed down the upper catch, G, is directly under the hook b of the cam E, whereby the window becomes locked, as it cannot be raised until said hook is pressed inward into its box. When thus pressed inward for an instant the window may be raised, and when the lower catch, G', reaches the lhook b it will force the same inward until it has cleared the hook, when the hook will drop forward again, and the lower catch be supported in and by the hook, thus holding the window in that position. In like manner the hook b must be pressed inward to lower the window for the catch G to pass, while thecat-ch G will itself press the hook in, and as soon as that is passed it will be caught, as above described.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- Y The catches G G', formed or provided with forward-projecting inclined flanges, ruiming in.opposite directions, which terminate at the upper end of' each, in a line parallel with the sides of' the catches, and arranged upon the sash, as described, in combination with the swinging cam E, all arranged to operate as and for the purpose set forth.
